2023 Draft Thread.

I think we're dreaming if we're hoping for Simpson at our second pick. We'll be lucky if he's there at our first.

He's an interesting 1 if you look at the phantoms. Some have him in the early 20's, others in the 50's. Most players in that 25-50 bracket have similarly wide draft spans though, indicating the evenness after the 1st 20-25.

None of them had Caleb Windsor in the top 20 until it got out that clubs rated him top-12.

The Launceston Footy club could have three first round selections in the draft in Colby McKercher, James Leake and Arie Schoenmaker. Its a decent effort from a relatively small football club. Mitch Thorp never lived up to being taken before Joel Selwood in the draft as a player but he has had great success as a coach in Tassie.
Mitch Thorp thoroughly deserved a second shot at AFL level, along with players such as Haiden Schloithe and Jye Bolton he deserves a truckload more credit than he's received thus far. Definitely gets a nomination for one of the greatest injustices of the 21st century.

I reckon we are odds on to take two talls in this draft

1 ruck/fwd
1KPF or KPD

Huge list need, and giving our draft position it looks like the perfect draft to make those moves

Pretty average.

Where Caddy is concerned, he’s been working with a specialist running-fitness & strength coach for a few months. What I saw of him about a week ago he seems to have improved his sprint and agility capabilities and overall athleticism. Think he’ll be ok on that front.

Morris however, he may have to rely a lot more on his hands (above his head).
I think that's Morris's issue, lack of pace and spring, all of the other types that size have endurance for their size.

With Caddy, it's no issue, all writeups have talked about a good 2km result and sprint. One will go top 10, the other is no cert to get picked.

I think Taylor Goad would be a great pick at our first pick. Forward who can ruck.

Caddy registered solid testing numbers, 3.02sec/20m sprint a touch better than I expected and 6.35 sec/2km plenty to work with. I don't have Logan's testing results but I can say he's done plenty of work further up the ground and I've never felt he was heavy legged when attempting to get lifted in pack situations.

Goad is one pick I would be happy with, I've been saying it for a couple of months now, this is the year to grab a ruck, we need one pronto & we also must allow for a pressure free 4 year apprenticeship.

Walk away with Goad & Morris and I'll be a happy camper.

Full article below, if anyone is interested. Think I’d be happy with those two picks, maybe a bit more speed in the midfield though if possible

Cooper Simpson and Joel Freijah.
Wouldnt that be the ducks guts for our midfield

Summary:

* Always find talent throughout the drafts. You've just got make sure you've done the work.

* Shai Bolton was pick 29. Be nice to find another.

* We'll use two picks in the National Draft and then look at the Rookie Draft on Wednesday.

* Consensus around top 8-10 in the draft then hard to split.

* Asked about Lance Collard and if he'll get through our pick? Hard to see.

* Naismith brought in as back up with Soldo leaving but we may still look at a young ruck.

* We'll keep all bases open. Unlikely to move up and giving up a future pick would be required to do, but if there is someone we like we'll still consider it.

* A train-on during preseason for the SSP is an option we'll explore. We always have.

* 22 1-4 year players turned up to training on Monday, so we still have a lot of youth.

* Expecting our 24-27 year olds to step up (given the retirements). We still excited about our 2021 draftees (Gibcus, Brown, Sonsie, Banks & Clarke). We're also backing Dow, Hugo and Ross.

* We have flexibility around our talls (esp. if we get Lynch & Gibcus back). It sounded as we'll look at more in the draft as we've gone for more running types in recent year drafts. We brought in Kosi for a specific role and we need to find a replacement for Lynch who is older.

* Joked about not knowing about Dusty coming out of contract next year and needing to ask Blair Hartley about it. Seriously though, still thinks Dusty's body is good [touchwood] and that he still has at least a couple of years left in him.

* Yze has been specific about how he wants to tweak our gameplan and the types of players required to do so.
