2021 Draft Thread

As an opening gambit I think flying with the KPD first was as viable as any strategy, the other options were to grab JVR in the second or grab Dean with our last pick, I think this decision will hold up well in 5 years time. Pick 9 isn't the problem for me, pick 17 might cause a little anxiety seeing as though we've gone for a flanker, particularly if we lose access to Johnson, Sonsie, Butler, Goater & Howes. It's like watching Kasparov playing Deep Blue, convention and orthodoxy has been thrown out the window and I'm waiting for that leftfield piece of wizardry, a queen being sacrificed only to come up with the check mate move with next.
The old Queen's Gambit eh!

The only thing that worries me with Johnson now is both freo & wc overlooked him…. If freo keep their pick tonight and pass on him again then something is not right with him????
Well, you could have said that about Shai too, sometimes there's sliders, Rance from memory went from certain top 10 pick to early second rounder. These things do happen & champion mids often emerge from this range. Merrett was also seen as too outside, I'm starting to see some parallels, Johnson is value the value bet from here.

Corey Warner being linked to one of the higher 20's picks and potentially Judson Clarke could slide up into those early 20's picks. He's a beautiful kick.

I think Wells is smarter than that . :)
Hopefully not. Failing that, hopefully Hawks and Carlton want a tall midfielder.

I still reckon Norths pick might be up for grabs, though they could be worried that Geelong might take Motlop if they slid down the order.

Depending on who Frockers pick at 21
Couldnt we trade to Nth 29 & 30 for their pick 22?
so that we can pick a Johnson/Sonsie/Goater/Butler?

I'd do that, think we need to get busy just in case they're all off the board.

Ok Spook, how do we play it from here? What are you willing to give up for pick 21?

I think if we are dealing with North that we need to talk future picks. Either a slide back and another 2nd next year, or maybe even swap the 2nd's again, but it will come down to how much they want Motlop.

Give them back the 2022 second? I'd be entertaining that thought, although I think Freo is the team we want to deal with.

I'd be happy with those picks, I wouldn't say it was the knockout blow, I think I would want at least one of Johnson, Goater or Sonsie in the mix.
Wouldn’t be trading further into next year with our second rounders. This draft still holds lots and lots of goodies. On the other hand a trade of two second rounders, which assures us Johnson, looks if it came, to be an opportunity not to miss.

No, I wouldn't either, I would perhaps use the North pick as capital however, Johnson is worth it, I find myself in a similar position to 2018 when I felt it was best to stitch up Bailey Williams & Jack Bytel for a future first. That pick turned out to be Dow so sometimes these gambles can pay off.
