2021 Draft Thread

Got no problem with us taking Gibcus at 9. Good player and if the club ranks him ahead of Hobbs, fair enough. But, unless we trade up and think Johnson or Erasmus is gettable, it’s gonna leave us with an unfulfilled need around a contested ball winning mid. Sonsie isn’t that. Others around the 17 mark aren’t really either. Goater or Sinn ? Not sure.

Is that why we may be trading back ? Do we have someone like MacDonald in mind ? Do we think others in the 30’s can help eg Sheldrick and co ?

Fascinating Draft.
Like Gibcus at 9 but the idea of Erasmus and Johnson trumps it. Whichever way we go two of the three would be a great start.

I am all for picking best available,

I've never quite understood best available. I get the concept, but not the practice.

who is best out of Max Gawn and Dion Prestia?

how do you possibly compare Josh Gibcus and Ben Hobbs?

surely in reality, its 'best available requirements'?

I really hope we get either one of the tier 1 mids or Gibcus.

I know we need a developing Key Forward, but something about Amiss screams Cleve Hughes to me. That's probably completely unfair, but that's the vibe. More Cleve than Jack.

Why oh why does the AFL spread the draft over 2 days/nights. Fair dinkum they do my head in.

It feels like we've been waiting for 6 months for it & it'll be 2 days before the last player is drafted. Whata buncha crud.

The Innovation Boss calling for a moratorium on change? :D

whilst welcome, its a textbook Scott slight of hand.

both brothers could have swapped a gherkin pumpernickel sandwich for a bag of fairy floss at pre-school,

and had the other kid nominating them for 'Buddy of the Week'
His appointment is a shocker and makes me think that Brendon's chances of succeeding Gil are disappearing.
It follows that those who believe that the stand rule is going to disappear are going to be disappointed.

Speed and disposal skill (plus stamina and courage) have to be a big tick before all future draft/recruiting selections are made.

Here’s the rule:

If you need a tall, don’t reach for one.

If you need a mid, pick for need. They’re at all stages of the draft.

Gibcus wouldn’t be a reach, but then we don’t need a tall back.

We need elite mids.

Surely we wouldn't have recruited Tarrant and kept Miller on a 1-year contract if he was considered a promising back up.
Not sure I'm with you tbh, TBH (pretty pleased with myself over that :mhihi )

Tarrant is clear best 22 while Miller is just one game into his career. But Miller's been on the list for four years now, so the club must see something in him. His first game was OK, too.

I think of Tarrant as a plug and play replacement for Astbury. With the likelihood Tarrant won't play all games in the next two seasons, I expect Miller will be called up regularly (the Garthwaite role, if you like).

My overarching point is that we're not in bad shape for big defenders, but our dire need is a clearance mid or two, with a marking forward not far behind.

The push for Gibcus has thrown me a loop.

I have come around to the idea of picking Gibcus and then the best of the midfielders. I feel the club is hoping we will get something from RCD, Stack, Dow and Martyn and maybe next year trade for Tom Green. We are still light on for backs right now and we can pinch hit in 2022 with the midfield we have notwithstanding injuries.

Does anyone know enough about next year's crop to comment on where Gibcus would go if he was in next years?

I know next year is a KPP bonanza. Would he be a top 10 pick in that draft? If so, I have no problem taking him top 10 this year. If not, why should we do it given we dont have an immediate need for a KPD?

What if the key back was as good as Taylor at GWS?

Sonsie is an elite midfield prospect imo. If I said, we’re reaching for Sonsie at 9, but Gibcus will slide to 17 it would be seen as a great haul

maybe Dimma has come up with a new paradigm in Boston,

and our starting midfield set up will be Gibcus, Balta, Nankervis (No.1 clearances RFC), Soldo?

everyone wants 192 mids. give 'em what they want?

don't need a tall back? Tarrant and Grimes will be gone in 2 years and Miller is small chance to make it leaving Balta the only key back we have long term. Gibcus looks a genuine talent. Saying that we also need mids and key forwards.

I guess you do some sort of ranking for each player about the chances of them being a bust, an ok player, a pretty good player, or a Dusty. Throw in qualities like leadership, then factor in positions, and a bit of list need.
Best yes, "best available" might not be the most accurate term.

When I say ‘need’ I mean red alert (mids, Amiss)

Oh sure Gibcus would be great. Just down the list of priorities

Get your point , but is he the best available at our pick to good to miss.

We aren't drafting 1st round for needs and by the time Gibcus would be ready for consistent AFL footy he will definitely fill a need.
