2021 Draft Thread

We aren't drafting 1st round for needs and by the time Gibcus would be ready for consistent AFL footy he will definitely fill a need.

Not necessarily. We need an elite mid to help us contend in 2024 when Dusty is in a forward pocket.

Next year is KPP nirvana apparently. We can feed on KPP then

We could trade for one and we have young mids that could come on. The cupboard is bare for young KPD, we need to get more KPP next year regardless.

Yeah we could trade for one, especially when Cotchin and Riewoldt free up $$

And talls do take time and tend to be more costly if you trade for them, Lynch for example

The truth is I’m not at all confident our mids will come on

I think it could be Gibcus and Van Rooyen tonight. I have a feeling Clarke rates Dow and RCD highly and might not see the need for midfielders as urgently as some. I would love Hobbs at our first.

Points well made, Ridley. I agree that we need to regenerate an ageing midfield - and there's plenty of mids in this crop - but my main concern is over spending on inside mids, specifically. I don't want to use a top ten pick on Sam Powell-Pepper. The spectre of the man-child looms large with Hobbs, so I'm cooling a little on him, even with his declared Tiger love. I can't think of a lot of true inside mids with a good dose of stodge who command high picks. Wines and Selwood are the only ones that come to mind, although early Selwood wasn't exactly stodgy.

We haven't really gone for inside mids or any other traditional roles in recent years.

We've generally gone for hybrid players. All of our premiership mids are inside/outside running machines who kick goals.

The smallest, stodgiest mid we have is also someone who can burst forward with pace and kick a goal on the run. They can do it all.

It'll be interesting if our choices end up reflecting a pivot into a new direction or not. We did trial a more controlled game style mid-year, so I'm not sure what to expect this year. The draft is wide open for us.

I like the whisper that we trade up for Rachele - he looks like he will be a bonafide A grader. Can't say the same for Hobbs or Johnson - who may be great, or might not.

Apparently Rachele not wrapt with the idea of going to Adelaide so it must be tempting for the Crows to turn Rachele into Wanganeen and Draper

Would anyone know if extended highlights videos are likely tonight?

Our picks usually look better after seeing more, but this year I'm not sure if they exist for some players!

Videos will go up very soon after our picks. Unlike the old days when the Conca video went up before he was picked.

Congrats to all the posters here, especially those who have put in such study and researched effort, to create 416 pgs so far. I think I dropped off about 150 pgs ago. Basically I don't think I can spare the time when it's all so hypothetical - so much depends on what is left by other clubs by the time it gets to your picks. Then every kid is selected on hope, faith and trust anyway. But well-done all the great PRE contributors.
My final thoughts then are:

1. I place my full trust in our recruitment team. As several have said, they have vastly superior intel/data than anyone in the speculation game. Callaghan my dream choice but otherwise agree with best available. Hoping that's a mid and KPP though.

2. Will be happy to see us keep and use the picks we currently have given such '21 a limited/curtailed prep year. Quite possible that pick 28 may prove a better player, or as good, as 17. Just exercise the picks as we already have. But won't mind upgrading into '22 via an exchange using one of our 2nd rounders.

Go Tigers! Have a great night all.

An elite mid would be great but I am not sure one will be available at our pick. I see Hobbs as solid player but not elite. Johnson probably has more elite traits but I don't know how likely we are to pick him.

No?
Who do you like better?

Anyway the point was that Balta and JVR would be a good long-time defensive pair
Gibcus, Andrew, Williams all better marks. JVR wins a lot of marking contests against boys due to his strength.
