2021 Draft Thread

it's a pretty bizarre list

Alleer at 9, Sheldrick at 11, Taylor at 12, Uwland at 18

No Sinn, Sonsie, Goater, Wilmot or Chesser
He’s a bizarre person. Tries to be purposely antagonistic to attract attention. Ignore.

yeah I've never found his views especially compelling or insightful. seems his schtick is more the volume of content he produces than anything

Also could knevitt become a kp,geez he's a big boy.
Scoop,bully,all in the know.
I'm not sold on his versatility, this comes down to his kicking which is probably comparable to Josh Kennedy of the Swans. I think it's midfield or bust but if he does make it then he will be a very difficult match up. I think his height will be beneficial as a resting forward & his speed and leap something which could cause some headaches.

Re: Ned Long

Sure he is slow but he has other assets that he brings to the table that could make him a player
Cripps,Steele,Dunkley are not really speedsters but i would take all of them at Richmond today

At least he doesn't just regurgitate the same rankings as Twomey et al. For all his faults he still has some rock solid principles with state league talent & recognises that these players are generally undervalued at draft time. He's moved on from the glut of midfielders in his top tier to genuinely looking for upside. I remember when most of his picks were safe limited ceiling players, this looks good at first glance but is a total farce when building a balanced list. He's improving, he's putting Derek Hine in deep focus which is also good as I think Collingwood has dropped the ball in recent times. Sure, there's a clickbait element but when you are getting paid there's a bit more pressure to keep up the interest. I will say this however, his write-ups are bland, sometimes inaccurate as we've seen wiith Tyler Sonsie & often come across as an exercise in auto text journalism.

Two things: for a long time he’s been purposely contrarian to the point of silliness and some of his descriptors are the actual opposite. If I had a dollar for every time he’s called someone slow when they’ve tested sub 3.0 and other such erroneous evaluations, I could retire. Ranking Alleer the 9th best player in the Draft and Sheldrick the 11th best is his personal right and assessment, but I would suggest there isn’t a single recruiter in the country that would align to that, and further, almost entirely unlikely to pan out that way either.

For decades he’s been one of the most irrelevant evaluators going around, going right back to his early BF days. Staggered ESPN embarrass themselves with him.

Bored with others speculation I decided to watch the 2020 WAFL colts GF. Enjoyable to concentrate on Erasmus, Johnson, and Van Rooyen. Also includes Hawthorns pick (name eludes me but not inspiring). I believe that a players traits follow them from their junior days. Would be happy to pick up all three. Johnson floats like Pendles/Whitfield and continues to be where the ball is. Has great ball skills and a football brain each disposal adds value. Takes over in the 3rd quarter. Is a kid in 2020 but won't be an inside mid bull. Will be a star mid but not a bull. Erasmus could be a dusty clone, one touch, energetic bull, each disposal counts. He kicks 4 goals, gives away 2 more and is part of several others. Yet you have to look closely to notice him. His two goals from stoppages need to be seen in slow motion, surrounded by many he uses strength, balance, sure hands and an innate sense of where the goals are. Two other goals come from his centering kicks under pressure to teammates in front of the goals. Given he was only ~16 and not a regular (played school footy) this game is notable. You can knock his kicking style but I feel he tries to place the ball rather than boot it, ie thinking about where it is going rather than technique. Besides there was no turnover either by hand or foot. At 190/83 and young, definitely my favourite draft pick. Van Rooyen has the basics in spades, athletic, tall, can mark and kick and has intensity. Reminds me of Oscar Allen and with the same excuses of why he was drafted late. Plays his best between HB and HF because he has not yet learned the "key" position role and plays better with more freedom to move. Will take a couple of years but worth the investment now. Anyway the game is good to watch if you need a fix.

Some nice thoughts, I'd still take Johnson ahead of Erasmus, although if Neil is there at 17 then we should go for it. As for van Rooyen, I have him pegged as the best contested mark in the pool, that alone makes him draftable. I think he's the perfect replacement for Dave Astbury, I wouldn't be upset with him at pick 17 (presuming Sonsie & Goater are off the board).

There's a bit of Nathan Brown about Rachelle. Would be a good get.

I'm warming to the Sinn and Sonsie double with 7 & 15.

If we want a Hobbs type player, that could be available with our later picks (Ned Long).

Surely you jest trying to compare Long to Hobbs. Hobbs is absolute quality.
Might as well say let's pick Knevitt first over Jonhson, or Sheldrick over Ward, there is a reason why players are rated top 10
Long will be lucky to go top 50, we ain't using a 2nd rounder on him.

I take Chriss's rankings with a grain of salt. Lists one of Hobbs weaknesses as Agility lol

Shifter on Hobbs
Showcased his athleticism with an 80cm running vertical jump and 6 minutes 32 seconds for 2km at the NAB AFL Draft Combine in Bendigo for Victoria Country.

Good signs, means he probably has a decent 3 step burst.

I know you're not keen on us taking Hobbs with our first pick Bully and i'm wondering if this is based purely on his footy and if you might factor in the type of person he is. It seems that whenever they talk to somebody who has had anything to do with this years crop of draftees they all seem to rave about what a great person and leader Hobbs is.

Only yesterday, I caught the end of an interview on SEN with a guy by the name of Tarkyn (I'm assuming its Tarkyn Lockyer but I only caught the very end of the interview) and they asked him if through his dealings with the boys was there one kid he really hoped would be drafted. He couldn't say Hobbs name quick enough, said they spent a bit of time together and he's a ripper.

I get the feeling with Hobbs you're not only getting a very, very good footballer but a quality person and a natural leader. Now I wouldn't know him if I bumped into on the street but every time I hear them talk about him as a bloke I get more and more convinced that the tigers would be mad not take him if he's still available at our first pick.

You know I want Hobbs, but I would be equally as happy if Gibcus was picked at 9, or Johnson/Erasmus all quality players.
It's our 2nd first-rounder that I want to nail. Sinn, Goater, Butler, Sonsie, will at least one of them get to 17. I'm thinking yes, what would be your order of preference from these 4 or others you have in your top 20.

I'm not anti Hobbs, I picked him in the PRE Phantom & have him ranked at 9 in my overall rankings. My stance can be viewed in two parts, I firstly believe Johnson is a player type that is traditionally difficult to find, that is athletic 190cm+ guys with elite kicking skills. Finding inside players much easier hence I reckon we go with the classy finisher first. The second point is the draft is littered with good inside prospects, McDonald may well be a better player, I rate his kicking to be more damaging & he has very solid numbers from a contested point of view. If he is off the board then Dittmar, Browne & Knevitt could also come into calculations. If we lead with Hobbs at 9 then we may find ourselves with fewer options to meet our list needs. Is there another player like Johnson available? Not really, the other talls have suspect kicking so it's a sizeable drop off. Even if we take Johnson at 9 and van Rooyen at 17 we can still meet our needs given there's quite a few inside mids down the order.
