2021 Draft Thread

Interesting Twomey mentions we’ve got some interest in Wilmot. Not sure what position he fills, but geez, on attitude and playing style alone, he just screams a Richmond player.

He has very good speed, doesn't stop running. Love players who attack the ball fiercely and take the game on which Wilmot does beautifully.
The only concern if there is one, is the guiding by hand to foot, would that be a concern in a fast-paced AFL game where every second counts when disposing of the ball.

Is he a need? can he transition to the midfield? As much as he's talented, we have Vlustuin, Short, Rioli, Stack, Mansell as small to mid-size defenders. Even baker can play back there if needed.

I much prefer to target bona fide mids, crafty forwards and a key back or forward (best available tall, if one is there at our picks)

Sonsie had a bad game against Geelong. So did most of his teammates - they lost by 100 points. Not sure how many touches he had but Horne-Francis only had 11. That team came together without much prep, early in the season after no footy last year. It led some to declare there were only eight draftable players in what has turned out to be a pretty deep pool. From memory only Daicos and Johnson impressed and I doubt Johnson got to 15 touches.

As for Sonsie regularly not getting a touch, that's overblown. He had 15 in the game that ended his season. He had 21 twice, one of which he also kicked two goals, 24 (one goal) and 34 (two goals). That's 100 disposals and five goals in his four complete NAB games. Plus 24, six clearances and two goals in his VFL game. In his 21-touch games he was equal-4th and equal-5th for disposals in the match. His 24 was equal-5th.

So, one bad game against Geelong, one game in which he copped a season-ending injury, and five other games in which he averaged 24.96 disposals and 1.4 goals.

Soligo is the only other mid from Ranges who'll get drafted so it's fair to say Sonsie, who was touted as a top-3 pick coming into the year, was getting most of the oppo's attention.

There were similar concerns raised about a kid called Cotchin after McGinnity blanketed him in a state game. I'm not saying Sonsie is Cotch-good, but he is damn good.

Delete this immediately. Other clubs do not need this logic in the world.

If we get him, I'm happy to co-parent.

I'm with you. I'd be delighted with Sonsie at 17. Could potentially play round 1 as a small forward (out Aarts, in Sonsie) but will develop into a very good midifielder. We'll regret not taking him at 17 if he's still on the board then.

So are you two lovebirds going to be trendy and hyphenate your kid's name? Tyler Spook-Scoop-Sonsie, it's got a powerful aura about it, more impressive than Viojo-Rainbow or Cockatoo-Collins. I like Spook-Scoop-Sonsie too, maybe I can be the godfather. On second thoughts, I better foster Taylor, I need to stop him getting so high.

Just rewatched the first quarter of the AIS-Geelong game. Sonsie matched up against Narkle or Constable at stoppages - two very good, very strong VFL players. Daicos 9 disposals, Fahey 8 (4 play-ons from kick-ins, one of which he chipped to Daicos and ran past to receive the handball back). Gibcus 4, Horne-Francis, Callaghan (one an out-on-the-full free), Johnson, Rachele, Roberts, Andrew, Williams all 2 touches, Sonsie, Wanganeen, Howes and Erasmus 1, JVR 0. Flogging.

Erasmus looked all at sea in that game, fumbly, hesitant & really looking like a kid against men. I get the fact he's bottom aged but that match was enough for me to plonk Johnson well ahead in the battle of the Sandgropers.

Comparing Sonsie to Cotchin is like comparing Kendall Jenner to your Granmy.........no offence to Granny. Cotchin was always going 1 or 2. Sonsie unlikely to go top 20.

The best players in the Geesook VFL game still stood out despite the flogging. Daicos, Fahey, Gibcus, Rachele, Andrew & JHF all impressed and enhanced their reputations. The only onballer not to was Sonsie

Except Callaghan as one of the supposed best. He struggled. Like a lot of them.

Understandably, they almost always get beaten up, every year. It’s just a view for clubs to see them against high level men.

Reading between the lines on Twomeys most recent power rankings, sounds like its either us with Sonsie at 17 or he may slip into the Hawks pick 21 (23). Hopefully we snap him up there. Doesn't sound like Freo will take Erasmus with their 1st.
Hope you are right and think you probably are.

There was a belief in Perth that they wanted Erasmus and Johnson, but now Amiss has emerged as their top target.
As Amiss now considered the most important of the three, the thinking is that he will go at 8, leaving a choice of the other two to us.
They will take the other.
Erasmus shading Johnson to us.
Amiss and Johnson to Fremantle.
Both Erasmus and Johnson are brilliant prospects.

We won’t be disappointed.
Sonsie at 17, with Johnson off the table, would be a very good result.

I'll balance that with the VFL game he kicked two in. Swings and roundabouts.

Enough here to keep me keen. Put that with good form as an underager in the TAC in 2019, a VIC MVP at 16 level and he's a fine pick. Look at some of the field kicking in the below, makes them land with butterfly feet.

At pick 17 he is a bargain. Talent like that should be top 10. I think many will look back and say how on earth did he slip that far.

Here is another mock draft from a couple of hours ago, has us taking Hobbs at 9 and Josh Sinn at 13, (after trading pick 17 & 30 to Bombers).

They did the first 25 in order and rounded it out with what each team would end up with.

1) Nth - Horne- Francis
2) Pies - Daicos , (Bid Matched)
3) Dogs- Darcy, (Bid Matched)
4) GWS - Rachelle
5) Suns - Gibcus
6) Adel - Callighan
7) Hawks - Ward
8) Freo - Amiss
9) Rich - Hobbs
10) Freo - Erasmus
11) Saints - Mac Andrew
12) WC - Wanganeen-Millera
13) Rich - Josh Sinn, (Traded pick 17 & 30 to Bombers)
14) Port - Matt Johnson
15) GWS - JVR
16) Bris - Josh Goater
17) Ess - Chesser
18) Syd - Darcy Willmot
19) Melb - Arlo Draper
20) Bris - Tyler Sonsie
21) Cats - Tom Brown, (Traded pick 32 & 34 to Freo)
22) GWS - Faye, (Matched Norths bid).
23) Nth - Leek Alleer
24) Hawks - Sam Butler

PS. I hadn't heard of Brady Hough before, here are some details:

Brady Hough

Peel Thunder/Western Australia | Midfielder/Utility

05/03/2003 | 189cm | 74kg

WAFL Colts: 22.1 disp | 3.5 marks

Hough came out of nowhere to dominate 2021 at every grade. He was one of Peel’s best in the Colts and made the most of his League opportunity in the last game of the season with 22 touches and nine marks, while also stamping his credentials with a strong State Championships. He’s plied his trade at either end of the ground but has done some of his best work as a wingman with good endurance, composure with ball in hand and a great set of hands. His rate of improvement has been enormous this season which will excite recruiters.

Best traits similar to: Will Hayward

Draft range: Second/Third Round
Turning over opportunities to take both Erasmus and Johnson, reminds me of Pavlich.

Not sure. I do know that it wasn't the only game where he didn't touch it this year. Clubs know he is talented from u16s but this year he had a few games where he didn't just drift out of the game he was literally unsighted. Spooked a number of clubs and he has dropped accordingly.
Using this year as your sole guide is a recipe for disaster. Being involved in junior footy I have seen many a talented player drop off this year.

Basically puts Ward and Wilmot the same specs, 183cm and 81kgs. That's not skinny coming in.
