Thanks Lee. Is the GF BR a different purchase to the DVD victory pack? Or does the Victory Pack contain only the Grand Final as BR?

I do find it remarkable that Australian sport shown on FTA is allowed to be broadcast in such poor quality.

Separate products.

Just double-checked to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks last night. Had Foxtel's Tigerthon v Adelaide R6 on the TV and switched to the GF DVD... very noticeable downgrade in picture quality.

NB Going by the BF thread and an email response from the production company, the full season DVD pack will be out in early December and includes a Blu-Ray GF disc. Another reply suggests a new version of the GF DVD will be produced with the audio sync issues resolved, also early December.

Yeah me too. Will wait until confirmation that all issues resolved and picture quality is maximised. Looks like Lee is doing the job for us.

The explanation below is from the AFL in response to a complaint (copied from BF):

Thank you for your email.

We were disappointed to read about these issues with the Premiers DVD and have raised your complaint with our DVD licensee Beyond Home Entertainment (Beyond). Beyond has provided the following feedback in relation to the two issues:

Quality

Beyond encodes the broadcast master at the highest possible bitrate allowable for disc capacity; unfortunately there are simply limitations to how much data will fit on a dual-layer disc (DVD9). Unlike most films and television programs, live sport can easily max out the capacity of a disc due to its ‘busy’ nature – constant movement on screen, panning, colour, sound etc. The match broadcast runs for approximately 3 hours plus bonus content on top of this. Beyond does its best to limit the impact of video compression but unfortunately it can be evident during playback.

Out of Sync Radio Commentary

In order to have the Premiers DVD available the day after the Grand Final, Beyond’s overnight authoring team only have time to do a spot-check the alternate radio commentary tracks due to time constraints. Unfortunately due to the nature of the radio calls, which are technically already behind play due to the radio broadcast lag, the sync issue was not spotted during this spot-check. Once Beyond was made aware of the nature of the issue it had the authoring house create a new master immediately. However by this stage the first run of the Grand Final DVD, Blu-Ray and Victory Pack discs had already been pressed and packed.

As the vast majority of customers watch the Seven broadcast commentary (which is in sync), a decision was made not to recall the original discs and we support Beyond’s decision based on its expertise in this product category. However, Beyond are more than happy to send out new/replacement discs direct to customers for any that request a replacement.

If you would like to accept this offer, Beyond invites you to contact them directly at [email protected] and they can organise a replacement copy for you.

Kind regards

The explanation re picture quality makes sense. Two hours plus of video footage, with four soundtracks, extras and the menu system squeezed onto an ageing medium - something has to give, and it's picture quality. They've compressed the video in order to make it fit, stripping out the least important detail, and the picture has suffered.

Noticed in JB that there are Victory Packs going back at least to the West Coast flags in the early 90's, so it's a formula they've been using for a long time. Plenty of people have big screen TVs now where flaws in the source are more obvious. It's past the time they should've switched to Blu-Ray for this product or put each game on two discs.

Re the audio... the rush to market wins over quality control, like Microsoft. Some people apparently paid $50 for the DVD at Punt Rd on the Sunday after the game. At least they're offering an exchange. Keep your dockets.

If anyone contacts Beyond seeking an exchange, suggest mentioning the audio sync issue only. The video ain't getting fixed.

I don't know how much bluray fits on a disc,
but at 1080p the Grand Final alone without pre game half time etc is 24 gig

Thanks so much for this information.
I contacted them yesterday upon reading this and already received a reply. Just had to supply proof of purchase and I'll receive a new disc in December when they start sending them out.
Good stuff.

Who keeps receipts, how did you provide proof of purchase?
Doesn't overly concern me as picture quality will still be the same.

I had ordered it online so found the email receipt in my deleted mailbox

I actually had my receipt in the draw but I reckon you could either get a re-print from your place of purchase or potentially a screen shot of your statement, with the purchase listed, may suffice.

Prof of purchase can be the receipt, a photo of the receipt, the actual transaction on your credit card statement.
