2014 Draft/2014 Nat Champs

I read he had a ripper last quarter to help VC get over the line.

Is consistency his issue?

Hard to say but a lot of youngsters struggle for consistency over 4 quarters. He's a very talented player and consistency will come.

100% agree Scoop

Take Nahas and White out of our side and look at the results and they were not that great but they broke the lines- we need midfield speed.

thats a convincing post scoop.

This year, I'd like to see us trade for another early pick, and concentrate on fast mids, for the whole draft.

Having Luke Williams on board will help. He was part of the Geelong team that put together there current list. And Geelong has had success plucking pacey classy types later in the draft (Steve Motlop at 39 in 2008, Taylor Hunt at 49 in 2008, Allen Christensen at 40 in 2009, Mitch Duncan at 28 in 2009, George Horlin-Smith at 33 in 2010, Jordan Murdoch at 48 in 2011) and these are exactly the types that we lack and cant get on the list. Look at these names. All with picks after 28.

And every one of those players would be in our best 22. Some would be in our best 12. Why can't we get them? What we are doing wrong? Why aren't we looking at these types? Hopefully Francis listens to Luke and begins to change the criteria we judge talent on after the first round.

All those names spread from the contest, take the game on with run & carry, can win their own ball and can kick. That's the mantra.

Agree, Scoop. I didn't make it down on Sunday so I was wondering your thoughts on the key forwards (Gus too). Is there anyone looking capable of being a top-line POWER forward? If so, is there the depth in the mids that if we gained another top-20 pick we could spend our first on that forward and say picks 20, 25, 45 on mids?

yes but these players developed in the geelong system where they practice and play this brand of football, where everyone is on the same page. had they been recruited by us they'd be fumbling, indecisive, running in circles, going backwards. there needs to be a complete revamp of our playing style and game plan philosophy which needs to be drilled into every player preseason after preseason so it becomes second nature. once it's imbedded into the senior players it will rub off onto the juniors that follow. agree we need to get better with the later picks, but our environment and system does not help develop our players. Taylor Hunt in our system would be a complete spud.

Agree 100% with everything you say here draft strategy wise, and I'm glad that you're glad about Williams.

I will say one thing though about the Geelong players you mention, to me they're still unproven, they are good and fit in well due, IMO to the great leadership of Geelong older champs. We'll see how they go in 3 years time, I don't think they are poor players, just aren't convinced they are champs that will continue the Geelong success at the very top.

Or, to put another way, stick Ellis, Conca, and say McDonough in their side they look great, stick Hunt, Christenson and Murdoch in our side and they look poor.

But all that is beside the point, they are all good players, just a matter of how good. you make a good arguement and I agree.

Peter Wright is a given. But he'll be gone. Similar to Vickery. But more advanced.

Hugh Goddard is another, reckon he is a great running target. Reminds me of Roughead. Really classy when the ball hits the deck.

If we could move Vickery for another pick before 25, then I would consider a key forward for sure. 20,25, 45 on mids could net you some talent if you follow the Geelong model of picks around them.

Arrrrggghh Jordan Murdoch. Leysy was mad keen on him that draft. Amazed watching it that year and he kept getting overlooked. We need his type in our sloooowwww forward half so bloody badly. We prefer to let pace go rather than add to it though.

Two names that get very little mention anywhere who leysy would be very happy to take at 26.

Jordan Murdoch - His ceiling is very very high ILO. Could zoom past a lot of guys taken before him in coming years. Has a lot of traits that will fit in well at AFL level. Would play a role that is very badly needed in our side as well starting as early as next year. Really like him.

Sebastion Ross - Wont be a star (not many will from this crop) but is a better & safer bet to be a good AFL midfielder than many rated before him ILO. Wins his own ball, excellent hands, is a neat left foot kick & hunts the footy. Is a beautiful size - 187cm/82kgs as well.

The good - Pick 15 - Docherty, Sumner, Murdoch, Devon Smith, McKenzie

Pick 26 - Ross, McKenzie, Murdoch, Crozier

The bad - Toby Greene

The ugly - Will Hoskin-Elliott, Matt Buntine

Again Snakey I get what your saying but you've got to look at the price paid.

Conca is pick 6, Ellis is pick 15. They should be high calibre AFL players. Picks inside the first round need to be core footballers at the very least.

We are judging the value of players we take at 6 & 15 (McDonough is a fair comparison) against players taken at 40, 48, 49. The return on investment matters.

Your justifying our first rounders against third and fourth rounders.

fair call again. The return on investment definately matters.

I don't get a chance to watch the kids, so which good kids are around the 15 to 25 mark?
Because I can see us off load someone to get another pick under 20

So do I understand this right, Wright, McCartin and Goddard are top 5 (?) material and are all big fellas?

We need one of them!

Theres a criteria geelong really value has told to me in conversation with stephen wells, and thats looking at players improvements over a season, given two equaled talented choices wells chooses player who has improved to that level believing this is a indication of what he will do at the highest level, and this philosophy seems to have great merit

SA very strong again this year. WA have some good prospects.

Connor Blakely very impressive for WA

Thoughts on Peter Bampton?

I'm a huge wrap for him Gussy.

Connor Blakely is going to bolt into the top 10.

Read today there's a Garlett playing for WA.Anyone know anything about him.We still need that elusive small forward.

Is it pretty much consensus among draft watchers that Brayshaw and Weller are the two best mids of this draft class? We need to land one of them IMO.

He's been on the radar for a couple of years. This might set him back a bit

"NORWOOD is confident youngster Peter Bampton’s hopes of being drafted this year will not be hurt by his absence from the national under 18 championship.

Bampton will be sidelined for eight weeks because of ligament damage and his ankle will be in a moon boot for several weeks.

The midfielder landed awkwardly and rolled his ankle in the final quarter of the victory over Adelaide last Friday night and the Redlegs immediately suspected significant damage. The cure is rest and he could miss up to seven games, starting with tonight’s clash against Woodville-West Torrens at The Parade"
