I think Benjamin is mis-understood.

Welcome to Punt Rd, Benny!

So we have the number 1 pick in the PSD. Fair chance that Cousins wont be at the Eagles. If the AFL don't deregister him (I'm not sure if they can) we could take him in the PSD as an absolute bargain. We have done well in the past with bad boys from the west. Go on tigers get him. Stick it up the AFL, Carlton & the WCE!
Go nuts people.

We should seriously look at Ben Cousins.

Ben has evidently avoided taking a drug test and as far as we know has no strikes recorded under the present AFL rules. So while the Eagles may face some sanctions from the AFL, I have a suspicion that Ben himself will not be suspended.

I have read the other thread on Ben and I am a little surprised at the high ground moral position taken by many. Ben is suffering from an illness. I have had a lot to do with addiction over many years and I firmly believe the situation is retrievable. He clearly needs a new environment and an ongoing relationship with professionals in the area. Sending him to the US and then returning him to the hands of the same "friends" in Perth gave him little chance.

Ben has taken the first step in recognizing that he has a problem. The rest is going to be up hill but certainly not beyond the rescources available to the RFC. Cardinal George Pell whom I think was our no I card holder could certainly see him properly placed in Melb in a very short space of time. Just one possibility.

I think that WC will axe him and that we should therefore examine the possibility of taking him on. It could be great for us, not just because of what he could contribute on the field and at training, but also because of the role model he could easily become.

If on the other hand he leaves the game in this way it is imo, unlikely that he will ever turn it around.

Maybe Steven Wright, Tom Hafey, (whose anti-views are well known) plus say Sheedy and players like Richo and Dan Connor could meet and start to review the possibilities and likely fallout. I'd be very proud if we choose to give Ben another chance.

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

No they won't.
Moderator Disco,
can this go back on as a new thread? I think it raises new issues and considerations.

Momentai the thread was merged because there had already been plenty of discussion about getting Ben to Tigerland , rehabilitation and whether he'll be delisted and or deregistered on the original thread.  The new thread contained nothing new at all.

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

Up to you but I would like PRE to consider a different perspective, which is what we as a club can do to help Ben to get through this and the likely consequences for Ben if no one can be bothered. With benefits.

sorry mate ,

I would prefer the club to help underage kids with addiction problems.

Let The Eagles help him. He made his bed and should have known better.

I feel more sorry for kids with disfunctional homes from an early age who may be suffering now.

Sorry but Ben deserves no help from us.

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

Momentai if you want a thread to discuss helping Ben in a non-football related manner I suggest you start one on the General Board. It's a bit hard to comment at this stage when we don't even know what he's charged for and what his problem is. There is a fair bit of discussion on the pros and cons of Ben as a Tiger on this thread though.

There has to be more to Ben's situation than taking an illegal substance and it's hard to comment much until facts are known. People indulge every day but aren't filmed and interviewed and detained and put behind bars and questioned by the gang squad and released on bail. Maybe more will be revealed tomorrow after Ben faces court.

It wont happen as the AFL will deregister the player.

It's an interesting one.

Cousins who has no strikes by the AFL gets drug tested by the police(or requested to) for the suspicion of illegal substances in his system & gets sacked.

BUT

Players who get tested by the AFL and are found to have illegal substances in their system get three strikes before they get turfed.

The only difference I can see here is Benny got tested by the Police.

It's a bit hypocritical for the AFL to take any moral high ground here by deregistering him

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

The last thing it is is non football related. But Rosy you d boss. I really don't mind.
Is Evo talking about the draft game or the 'other' draft game which I can't find ?

Whats happened to Evo?

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

Lets start the "Benny to Richmond petition" as long as he brings those 2 chicks he had with him.

It would be a bid decision to bring him to Richmond, but i dont think the AFL would allow it.

Re: Ben Cousins threads and Poll [Merged]

firstly im not surprised. you dont go away for 10 or 12 weeks and become suddenly over your addiction.in fact you never get over your addiction. i am surprised at people being shocked that something like this has happened.

only one person can decide weather they are going to make a serious effort to beat their addiction and thats the person who is addicted. once an addict decides to help himself in most cases they relapse continually into old habits. it seems the few who do beat serious drug addiction have to hit rock bottom this hasnt happened in cousins case and is unlikely.

i also believe cousins doesnt need help from his employers. he has to help himself he has to be willing to be guided by his family no one else.

imo wce by allowing him to play football this yr have done more harm than good it gave cousins the idea he can ply and do drugs i know i havent said that very well i hope people get the gist of what im saying. for ben to get better he needs to bottom out thats a harsh call but its a fact .people who make excuses for him and bail him out of trouble are killing him with kindness. iknow this because i have seen drugs tear people apart who were dear to me.

its high time as a society we adopted a zero tolerance to drugs in our society before the whole fabric of society is torn apart if it hasnt been already.

Bit simplistic there oldie.

Refusing the test is not the reason he will be sacked or the three strike rule.

It is his continuing blatant disregard for the rules that have been imposed upon him, not to mention stipulated in his contract.

The AFL has the right to deregister a player for bringing the game into disrepute and Cousins has done that several times now. He has had more that three chances, its just they were officially listed as strikes.

Remember he is now a self confessed substance abuser who continues to show blatant disregard for himself, the club and the AFL.

The words Tattoo's on his gut just about says it all for me.

I feel sorry for Cousins and the situation he has gotten himself into, but some of these guys just lose track of reality. They socialise with the rich and famous, have glamourous women clamouring over them, (many of whom wouldn't touch them if they weren't AFL stars), they get big pay packets and generally live a dream life for a certain period of time.

But fact is their is a world of drug addicted people out there who never had half the chances Ben has been given.

Some say the help wasn't sufficient, but where do you draw the line when that person shoves your face in it time and time again.
