He was pretty lightly framed and had some injury concern so more suited to the rookie list IIRC.

Just wondering what people whink of Cuz's intangible effect on our list now and whether or not it's worth more than tackling machine, neat user and excellent tagger in the making, Jordie McKenzie who was taken number 1 in the 08 rookie draft.

Leysy would hazard a guess more than the insurance benefits of Kent Miller Discoman.

I was thinking of the claims about Cuz's long term effect on our list a week or two ago when Dusty mentioned he didn't take advantage of talking to Ben and learning from him while he was there. I can't see too many of our players performing like Ben used to in his day. Seems like the claims of his future legacy to our kids were a lot of hot wind. Nothing but speculation. We'd have to have been be far better off had we drafted a kid who had a good chance of a long term career at Tigerland.

That's irrelevant Leysy. Would you prefer McKenzie or Cousins with that pick now?

WOW, is there some Gold in these there hills !

Benny the Dope, what memories those were, believe after his signing was when I had to take a little hiatus from here for my own sanity.

Just reading back a little and seeing so many old names that are no longer around, wonder if their opinions in this exact thread are the reason for that ?

How many ate Crow over their prognostications and predictions of the great things that Cousins would bring to this club I do wonder ?

Good Ol' Benny, had many fooled that lad, then again, thats what people with addictions do isn't it, they dupe and decieve.

Loved reading the talk about Premierships, Brownlows, B&F's and Norm Smith medals though, that sh!t is better than an hour of Classic Looney Toons.

Never seen more 180's in my life from when he was just another opposition player with major problems to becoming a Richmond player.........didn't some around here go Lady Gaga and committ more flip-flops than Nadia Comaneci in her heyday.

No, its seems the talk about how much influence he would have on our Club and younger players was just as Rosy has so eloquently and correctly stated ......... "Hot Air" ! (I personally would have gone with something a tad stronger)

Like it was every going to be anything else........Que Sera Sera !

I was wondering how this thread got back on Page 1

This is a trick question right Disco ?

I like how your sense of humour seems to have kicked in from years gone by.

Well I for one, although I quite liked the idea of having Cuz in the team, thought the pick would have been better used on a youngster given where we stood as a team (ie we sucked, very much). A lot of people disagreed quite vehemently at the time and I'm just wondering if they still feel that way.

PS I like the way you've chilled out too. :)

Wouldn't have generated the short term dollars. Might have ended up a long term player though.

Lets be honest here ............that was the ONLY reason he was picked up by the club, was never going to do anything other than boost memberships and give the PR dept at the Footy Club something to go crazy with and use as they seen fit in any manner which would generate more $$$$'s.

What he play ?...30 odd games (32 I see, Hmmm, what a coinky, same as his jumper no. ???) ..........yeah, I don't think it would be a stretch to say that McKenzie may have given us a little more gameday value than that ToO !

Hated it then, haven't changed an iota on that since.

You really aren't expecting peeps to admit they may have been caught up in the Benny hoopla and now express doubt over their choice/opinion are you Disco ?

Lets call that Momentai (who I see has been around much of late) guy up and ask him, he seemed very well versed and level headed in all things Benny and wasn't at all bias in his opinion in the least. :hihi

l was 1 of the ones happy to take cuz and l am still happy we took him.l dont think a young player instead of cuz would have turned this team around and if l remember correctly the player we would have taken is on our list anyway.robby nahas

If we rated him we could have got him at pick 70 in the National Draft which we passed on, so I don't think it was ever a Cousins/McKenzie call.

And don't worry about McKenzie, how the hell did the Hawks get Shane Savage at pick 75! We pass at 70 and hold on to our duds till we are sure but the Hawks pluck a kid like Savage at 75. It's another lesson on how we don't go deep enough in drafts and cull our list hard enough.

We still had the chance to try a youngster and passed it up. The PSD pick is essentially a late ND pick but you have more chance to assess the talent that hasn't been picked up. Especially kids like McKenzie who had some injury troubles but equally had some good performances to his name.

Also think we've culled pretty well since Beavis got the job. 26 in two years isn't it?

I was against it at the time, thought it was a distraction and that he was too old and well past his prime to contribute much of anything (and as it turned out this summation was pretty well right). However, I think what the club picked up in memberships etc probably made the exercise worthwhile. Having said that, there were certainly some howlers said at the time. From memory some of the more amusing comments were, 'he is a better pickup for Richmond than Judd is for Carlton', 'with Cousins we will make the eight and be a regular fixture from then on end' and my favourite when people bought up his age (and which also ignored the fact that he was a Junky and all the damage that would have done to his body) 'Cousins has five good years left in him'. Thought that was so funny at the time, just because Richardson played to his mid-30s and because people simply wanted to believe it they tried to convince others it was true. Still as a marketing tool I can't complain.

I agree with the cull %, now another 26 come this next offseason and we may finally be getting some decent AFL level players aboard for a sustained return to the upper echelon by the mid teens here. ;)

The difference being Hislop was still a young player when he was drafted and re-rookied and Miller was taken after 26 changes to the list in 2 years. There was absolutely no hint of "locked & loaded" mentality to either decision.

A bit like Tygrys, I wasn't a big fan of picking him up. It eventually grew on me and it seemed the selection worked in our favour for a couple of years, at the very least in the media and the hearts and minds of other supporters who were glad we helped Cuz out.

The timing of his retirement was spot on. His accidental overdose still doesn't sound legit and it was time we moved on him.

In retrospect, yeah, McKenzie now on our list would have been better but at the peak of the Cuzmania, it also seemed like we didn't make a bad one.

We've made a lot worse decisions during draft and trade weeks than the Cousins one.

My views on picking up Cousins are well known on here.

It was ridiculous that the club's list manager had to bow to the weight of public pressure and I would have preferred a punt on a kid than a player with baggage past his best.

Wallet was looking for the quick fix to save his bacon hoping Benny might lift us into the 8. As it turns out we finished last and we're back at the beginning of another rebuild.

At least it made some coin. Could have been a worse outcome if things had gone pearshaped.
One he was signed though the club handled the Cuz circus pretty well I thought.

Now Cuz has stated he is a Tiger man and will follow our success? in the future, let's give the Dusty's, etc a chance to fully embrace the Cuz training, gut running during games, experience with taggers, etc by bringing him to training and games more often.

Dusty can then follow him around and do the stuff that the club told us he was doing before but Dusty has let the cat out of the bag by saying he didn't do enough of it. Whether that be in Melbourne or Perth, it might be worth signing Cuz on as a pseudo assistant coach to the midfield who seem to be struggling with the Cuz type clearance and hard ball work this year ...
