Is it just me, or has Ben's last 2 months been the best of his time with us?

He's in the best shape since his final game with West Coast IMO.

That is an interesting quote, probably the only indicator I've seen that Cousins won't get another contract,.

Interesting comments from Willy Wonka re Cousins:

"He does train hard, but he is not the most attentive in my meetings, that's for sure. And the word structure to him (means), 'You're getting in the way of how I play'."

Doesn't sound like the kind of thing Willy is trying to instill into the young 'uns. 'Structures' seem to be one of the key elements of his gameplan. Can he, or will he, tolerate Cousins operating outside those parameters?

Intriguing stuff.

It may me sit up when I read that. Doubt it's just a throw away line.

Hardwick makes some telling observations

Now I know I say there is 'more love than realism' about Ben Cousins' fit with the RFC, but Damien made some rather telling remarks. Perhaps there is little more Ben Cousins the player than Ben Cousins the team player............

From the Herald Sun:

"Look, he is fantastic, no doubt. He is infectious at the club. You love to be around him," Hardwick said.

"He is one of those guys you flock to him to hear him speak.

"He is very, very good at his advice he gives to a young player.

"Whether coaching is for him, I would say not.

"I think he is a guy that loves the training aspect. I think if he is ever going to get involved it will be more from a training point of view, like a fitness role.

"He does train hard, but he is not the most attentive in my meetings, that's for sure.

"And the word structure to him (means), 'You're getting in the way of how I play'."

Crunch. Haven't seen those comments before.

Re: Hardwick makes some telling observations

i heard Dimma say that on the radio and it was abit tongue in cheek I thought at the time. It was sort of he was saying Ben is a great player but coaching like off field coaching isn't for him. I think way to much has been made of this already. It wasn't designed as a slap at Benny.

Forget about the Cuz being in our best 22, he is our single best player over the past month.

Really running on top of the ground. If only his teammates put in the effort he does we wouldnt have results like yesterday.

On his future its not hard to read that the club are very unlikely to offer him another contract.
Wrongly in leysy's opinion.

Cheers Con.

I must say they sounded pretty darned harsh.

Re: Hardwick makes some telling observations

It wasn't harsh. It was like Blight saying that Ablett plays his own game and he doesn't try and interfere. Or Pagon saying Carey goes out and goes crash bash and he doesn't have to tell him anything or what to do.

It was just a one off comment mainly about Benny's suitability to coaching, really. I don't think it was a criticsim

Agree it was as a result of a coaching question - hence why I quoted it in context with what was said around it.

HOWEVER, when a coach teaching 10 or more new kids a complex game plan (reportedly) and developing another 10 that have failed under previous game plans, it can't be good having a certain player playing as Hardwick himself describes it. I doubt that his comment was off the cuff - it would have been as a result of coaching meetings and certain deliberations I would suggest. ie, he is repeating past discussions had.

Did you hear him say it? I am sure if you had of heard him say it then you would agree with me, it was just a bit of a joke, more in admireation for Benny than anything else.

Yep, only a glimmer of hope for Cuzzy in 2011. Would rather carry Cousins for another 15-18 games then put up with some of the other choppers we have going around in the midfield.

The word "spread" is not in the Richmond vocab. Every club in the top four excel at this. Cuzzy helps on this front with his handball release.

In my opinion Hardwick was sucked in and pushed to spill out more than he anticiapted by the journalist asking him the questions, Mr Sheahan.

Which radio station was it on? I'd like to see if there's a podcast so we can listen to the discussion in context.

FFS it was light hearted off the cuff. You needed to of heard it. Of course it looks bad in print but if you had of heard it then you would realise that Dimma was just jesting.
