If the club assesses that his body can withstand the rigours of another season (min of 15 games) then must be given the opportunity to go again.

Despite Richmond having a young list of mostly no names, we must spend minimum of 92%? of the salary cap.
I see Cousins next year mostly acting in a playing/assistant coaching role, possible also including Coburg.

Would be a win win if Ben is considering a coaching career.with Richmond paying him withiin the salary cap.

I could certainly see Ben in a role of speaking with players on the boundary as they are rotated, or even as a runner instructing onfield, if his body does not hold up to playing.

Take a player like Nason for example who's only going to benefit from the games he's had this year. He's not better than Ben now but he'll be better next season for the experience he's had in 2010.

A very important reason here Oldie, I agree with you, and by replacing him with an untried player we may unearth some talent. Gaining experience and game time into our youngsters is more important than another 12 months of Ben Cousins, in the overall scheme of the things.

But does the learning experience of 1 player outweigh the learning experience of 21 other players?

Just putting them on the ground isn't enough for them to learn everything they possibly can. While he hasn't got some magic secret to turning everybody into stars, I do believe that blokes like Dustin Martin and co benefit from Cousins... will the team be better because of this benefit to a number of players, or will the team be better without this knowledge and with another kid running around a bit prematurely?

My thinking is: 2011 is a learning year. Cousins teaches good habits. We're already on target for 500 games experience into kids (most in AFL). His form is good enough. Keep him!

Hard to evaluate such a question. Cousins is a player not an assistant coach and will not be around to nurture the playing list.

Cuz has earnt his spot by playing good footy and there are many other unskilled players in our side that should be moved on to let young kids get experience before even considering Cuz.

If Cousins was 28/29 I'd agree. At 32/33 with signs of slowing down and more frequent injuries, I think you need to view his place on the list differently.

Very likely Cousins will get injured at some stage next year. Not trying to put the mozza its just a natural occurence for older players and it takes longer to recover. Think this reasoning was behind Dimma's comments recently that the playing future of Cousins takes a turn if interchanges are limited next year.

Yep, while still playing well he's noticeably declined form last year. We should expect another significant decline next year.

Would love to see him play till he's 35 like Robert Harvey, Shane Crawford, James Hird and Richo did.

He's only 32... got 3 more seasons in him! ;D

They didn't abuse their bodies as Cousins has.

Unless you're a doctor I think that's pretty irrelevant to the discussion.
I'm more concerned with his slow start to the season as I am sure the club was.
Took him half the year to get going and he's finally playing close to the football expected of a 32 year old vet on the list.
Add a couple of club enforced suspensions and it wouldn't be hard to see why the club might call curtains on his career.
However I'm sure many will still focus on the past month as evidence of his value.

Is that not a better indication than the 'potential' problems you allude to though?

It may well be Freezer. That's what the club will have to weight up at season's end.
My guess is that they will look at his overall season as a clearer indication than the recent purple patch.

I think that was this year rocky. We have an exciting core of young leaders who hopefully will have picked up some of Ben's knowledge.
2011 will be about shaping the next premiership team, which Cousins will not be part of. Got to fly on your own sometime.

May have made the decision himself, was on radio saying that he wants his documentary aired whilst still a listed AFL player.
If it is as shocking as we are led to believe than I imagine the club will quickly distance themselves from Ben. Thats just my opinion mind you so I could be totally wrong. They may choose to embrace the project. who knows..

it appears the doco will be shown this year, and that it wont preclude him from playing on.
i dont see that it will impact, i can understand the club not wanting it shown during our season, but once thats over it shouldnt be an issue.

Not sure Brodders, I think it could become an issue if the media decide to invade punt road again. Ben needs to make a choice I think. Footy or Media. Club or individual
