I'm a big Cousins fan and hope he comes to the club. However, I know someone who works for the AFL in a reasonably high position, who says it is common knowledge at the AFL that Cousins has had a few recent slip ups. That is why no club would take him.

He also expressed doubt as to whether Polak would be placed on the long term injury list, but ultimately that is a commission decision.

What's interesting is, public opinion is now about 80% infavour of Ben playing. The perception is the AFL do not want him to play. They are in a difficult spot if they turn the request down.

Personally I think we should take Ben with our pick and place Polak on the long term injury list then promote a rookie. The chances of a player who isn't picked up in the national draft acually having an impact is about 5% anyway. Its not like we are risking anything as, for example the Crows did, when they drafted Carey for pick 2.

Here's something to consider when looking at the Ben Cousins scenario.

Last year our introverted team threw, or attempted to throw games every time we hit a reasonable lead. Our best football was constantly played while we tried to pin an opponent back. Our worst football (kicking sideways and going ultra defensive) was played when we were leading.

Examples: We had the Dogs completely done, but instead of continuing to play the brand of footy that got us the lead, we crawled into our shells and tried to defend the lead. Result: Draw

StKilda, same deal! Way better on the night but kept surrenduring the lead until we eventually lost on the last kick of the night.

Port - blew an 8 goal lead to scrape in thanks to a match saving mark by Joel Bowden.

Essendon (first time around), slaughtering them until, yup you guessed it, we went sideways, backwards and hardly ever forwards. Managed to get home.

Brisbane - killing them, then kept letting them back in. I remember falling 8 or 9 points down with 2 minutes to go. I turned to my brother and said "Thats the best thing that could happen because now at least we'll play real footy again" - and we did, getting up to win in the dying seconds.

The point is this!

Cousins is THE MOST extroverted player in the competition. If we started to play that brand of footy, the first thig i'd do as a coach would be to throw him in the guts and tell him to show the way.

Maybe Cousins is the single player in the competition that is most capable of putting our side on a high (pardon the pun)!

very well analysed. if we take him and he kicks arse then we win. if he relapses, well such is life!

why do you even bother to support the club if its membership sicken you so?

between us all being ferals, deluded, ignorant, and now head in the sand arse in the air types, surely you have had enough to move on and buy your much beloved WCE membership?

If it goes belly up, so be it. The upside of Cousins versus the upside of Kingsley/Weller/Marsh/Fleming/Bowden is pretty clear.

hmm the upside of a proper youth process.

The argument that recruiting Cousins is against our youth policy or where we are placed is valid. The argument that he has been a drug addict since he was 3 and still is one is irrelevant.

Get off your high horse champ, don't forget I have been gunning for that too.

And this is the time you roll the dice. Pick your moments. This is ours.

That's the role of the dice.
Might get a ten year player like Thursfield or Foley too.
More than likely they won't be like those players though.

Hey, I can cherry-pick to support a line of argument too!

Banik, Fiora, Pettifer, Schulz... etc etc etc.

I take it you're happy with all of those?

There's a kid wearing no 9 for the Tigers by the name of Trent Cotchin who has the potential to be the next Ben Cousins, imagine if Cuz teaches Cotch how to gut run, how to dominate games rather than save them or limp over the line. This is another thing that Cousins could possibly bring to the club and he can do that without playing every game.

yes and imagine if he teaches him that you can do what you like irrespective of the effect on others , that you can make a fool of your club with impunity, that the club should cover up anything wrong you do, that you can dodge drug tests, and tricks like shaving body hair. If you want to make the "leadership" argument fine, but to be fair, at least admit that it could cut both ways. What sort of leader was he at WCE?

Good on field,

Shocking, off field,

Everybody knows it's a gamble, a big gamble,

and i can understand the people who think its not worth it,

I'm in the camp that thinks the positives if they come off , can be alot bigger than the negatives,

We give him a chance, its up to him to take it.

If he plays up , show him the door , with a boot up his backside.

We move on without him.

You're sporting a lot of poor assumptions on Trent's character there. Seriously, there is no chance whatsoever Trent Cotchin in particular could negatively be influenced by Cousins.

To answer your question - he led that club to a flag, then he led them to the gutter.

It's pretty obvious what we must do.

Draft Cousins, win a flag, delist Cousins right away ;D
