All I will say is it's a good thing that wasn't his job interview.
Not convinced he's past his problems at all.

Here, here Oldie....... as great a footballer as Ben has proven to be i feel he is not even close to drug free. I think he is more interested in making heaps of cash out of a delusional but supportive public by producing his doco. Think he and his gangland cronies will be having a few lines and scotches from the funds raised. My thoughts are not for us thanks.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Bit overboard there Snapper.

Can't see how he'll make any money out of the doco & if he does I hope it's channeled in the right direction.

For all we know Benny is doing his darnedest to get off the stuff but I felt the interview wasn't convincing that he's been able to do that yet and until he can convince himself, as Newman said last night, no one will touch him with a barge pole.

From that interview I get the feeling that he wants to play footy again but is very concerned about the scrutiny that goes with the professional aspect of the AFL. He's enjoying life away from football because he doesn't have that harassment but does he want to go back to it?

He's still got a bit of time left but he's got some work to do clearly before he goes to the AFL for re-registering.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Have to agree. He showed a certain level of cunning which is fairly typical of addicts, and it was that defensiveness that was always going to disappoint those waiting to be convinced he is ready to go.

Didn't talk about where he is at, didn't talk about having a plan in place and didn't really talk about what he has been doing to get himself up off the ground. Both player and manager need do much more if Ben is to be a chance.

IMO, getting back to playing football sounds like a plan. Cousins will attract enough attention running around at Port Melb. let alone announcing to the football world he is making a comeback. I believe both player and manager have sketched a plan and one Vic. club has expressed huge interest when this job goes to tender. ;)

do you care to elaborate for us on what that plan may be and who the club is please?

I still want him at Richmond but to take him on the club will need to see him pass muster at the AFL, which will include periodic blood tests. Both RFC and Ben need to work together to a position where we can face the AFL with confidence.

He's an addict, suggest you follow the yellow brick road to see the Wiz of Oz to fix that first.

Now you are on the money - whilst he continues with the cunning he won't rehabilitate.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

It's become his catchphrase 'it's an ongoing process'.

Sure the rehabilitation is Ben as you are addict to hard drugs but at some stage it's got to be a completed process or quite simply you won't play AFL again.

The AFL will not re-register him if there is any element of doubt that he is still on the gear IMO.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Pharace
Ben won't be permitted to return to the AFL unless he has passed AFL testing. If we want him we need to work with him now to get him to a situation where both the club and player can face that testing with confidence. A fantastic opportunity for a strong club to put a hand out to Ben and help him get through the next 6 months. . Maybe he then gets himself into a draft and maybe he gets to Punt Road. More to do.

Hope it is us and even if we fail, imo it is better to have put ourselves out there than to have sat on our hands.

I highly magnaminous view - I applaud you.

But frankly, the energies (time and money) associated with such a project are either beyond the Club, or would distract it from more likely successful outcomes in other areas. Risk vs Reward.

Still following this line that the club should be footing his rehab even though we didn't pick him up in the PSD last year after his banning for a year for being a drug addict.

Hilarious! :cutelaugh

How about concentrating on putting that money, time and resource into scouting for the next Ben Cousins(sans drugs), rather than speculating on a 30year old former superstar with serious issues.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

No not worth the potential issues that come with him. Imagine every time a news outlet says something about news coming out of Richmond everyone will soil themselves and immediately wonder what Ben has done this time. If the way the club is going at the moment doesn't send us all grey that would tip us all over the edge.

Seriously though still no. We don't know if he is clean and he isn't young either and has suspect hamstrings. In the interview he said he wasn't going to play just sign and train. To me for him to have any chance he would have to play games this season to get back into the game. At 30+ you don't want to be picking someone who needs some time in the VFL to get back into it. He would have to be cherry ripe to go round 1.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Taking Cousins would say we have learnt nothing

Build your own club don't take other clubs discards

Yes he WAS a champion

That was WAS

cousins back to perth

reported on channel 10, cousins going back to perth to train with WAFL club/s and will not be playin with port melbourne in 08 or anybody else.

Re: cousins back to perth

Didn't he sign with Port Melbourne or is it the journalist's typical made-up garbage ?

He registered with them but didn't sign any contract.
