It was relevant in the sense that Ben will always be an addict and your threads consistently bemoaned the idea of putting an addict in a football club enviroment because of the impact that may have on young players. No where do you suggest he should come to Richmond in any circumstances and your about face is and now denial is a hoot.

Just how do you figure he will always be an addict??????? Not sure what you mean but am dead sure Richmond don't require a 30 yr old rehabilitating themselves not only into their social networks (which will be on another planet) but also psychologically. Dump the idea of Ben..... he deserves his struggling plight.

You just don't get it do you momentai. :p

If he is 100% committed to having another shot at football then he might be worth a low cost punt in the PSD but please excuse me if I have my sceptism because some things are no longer up for argument.

I said I wouldn't want a guy on hooked on ice among other things in a football club environment.
It since been proven Cousins was on these hard drugs at about the time you were trumpeting his arrival at Punt Road last year. :p
Who had the wisdom in hindsight?

If he is off the gear then obviously it is a different story but temptation will always be there and it's still a risky proposition.
Hence my call for a very low outlay with stringent conditions and even then I have my doubts. So would many.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Think it would be best to let Ben lye in roughly the same amount of dirt that Mr Momentai's comments should be Oldie. Could say more about Master Ben but i am sure that the pressure of the Disco Man would be thrust upon me. :hihi

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Cousins would draw 400k pa upon his return. A team might go crazy and offer 450k but unlikely IMO. At either figure he creates cap pressure.

All football clubs understand the simple business idea of shared pain. (If you fail it hurts us and it hurts you.) And that means Cousins's contract will be heavily performance based. Note that the maximum sum is included in the cap.

So despite the scarcity of high draft choices in 2009 a team that felt its widow was open might well expend a 1RDP on him. (Don't forget that Cousins can nominate his contract value and conditions in the ND, for which he must nominate.) But he will create some cap pressure.

If you were Geelong, for example, you'd get rid of say Hackie, take a draft choice and save the 300k. Easy call. If you were Hawthorn you might be forced to say - do we let them get Cousins and rule us for loose ball again or do we take the risk and go after him ourselves? Young gone. Or Ladson. Pfft. Easy.

And if you're Sydney, it's pissant currency for one more chance.

He'll go to a top six side with their first round choice I reckon. Perhaps North or Adelaide if they finish outside that area. Perhaps. Four will rule it out and two will break ranks.

No bottom eight side would be mad enough to jeopardise their future by sacrificing such a high pick this year, would they?

Kangas reserved their right of refusal, via the intellectual one they have as coach, on 10 news tonight.

At the end of the day I would think there would be around 4-5 clubs that will seriously look at him.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Ben will always be an addict in the sense that it will always be an issue for him and the temptation will be there.
TOO you have spent a good deal of time bagging Cousins and the views I have expressed on the matter over the last year. Your posts over the last 24 hours speak to a change of mind. :fing32

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

You roll the dice with anyone you pick in the draft, but at least this guy can play, and at a high level. Knowing that any deal he signs will have a behavior clause, we should definitely have a look at him.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

No thanks.
The only white line at the RFC i want to see is around the Boundry,Centre & Goal lines.

he would be the ONLY recycled player I hope the club look at... the rest of the draft to be used for youth

I agree. With a new recuruiter we will be able to do that. I don't want us to go down that path that we did with spud. We need the kids - they are the future of the Richmond Footy Club. Cousins would be a great assest. Our midfielders would learn so much and their games would improve being around him. If he has got his body right and proves he is rehabilitated he deserves a second chance. He is a fantastic footballer and Richmond would be stupid not to look at him for the short term. But it all depends on what we have to give up.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

What's to say that Ben, into his 30s and coming off an extended lay off, would have the hunger, desire and abiity to star on a consistent basis at a new team where he doesn't have the same mates, on-field chemistry and/or enthusiasm if the team he goes to isn't anywhere near as competive as the team he's come from has been.

None but that goes with any mature age recruit. People are competitive by nature and fear embarrassment if they fail. Cousins will have plenty to prove.

I'm with you momentai, I find Tooheys change of heart refreshing. :fing32 Good on you Tooheys for being able to admit you were wrong.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Heard Greg Miller with KB say they would discuus him but not sure if they would take someone who hasn't played footy for so long at 30 years of age didn't say no though but also said Daniel Kerr no that is a different matter!!

Yeah Miller claimed he would love to have Kerrs autograph on a contract.
Not sure what he'd offer up though as we have a great young group of players coming through.
First round draft pick changing hands bidding to commence at sound of the gong to commence trade week.
Also heard a grab played earlier from Plough that Cuz hadn't been discussed yet, any thought to get him would depend not just on his playing capacity but his willingness to work with and teach the likes of Lids Bling Cotch etc.
