He is NOT the future of our club.

We are not at the stage where we can top up with an older type player.

Leave well alone, damaged goods.

The winner in me wants him to train and lead our boys on the field.

Especially when I think of Richo.

Benny that's the part of you that wants to gamble at the casino to make a fortune rather than earn it.

I know it's tempting, but the percentages don't stack up, he's too much of a risk, his influence could be as much bad as good, the sponsors will hate it and realistically we would be lucky to get 25 good games out of him.

Re: Ben Cousins, approach or stand back and let the wowsers have their way?

I'd love to see Cousins in yellow & black, but the facts are he'll command a high price. For mine, you don't invest that much in the past. Let the others squabble over him like pimple faced schoolboys after the one hot chick at a blue light disco.

see my thread in the rumour page on BC. No thanks

Bit of a surprise if true Jack. Last year he was destined for the PSD until he was suspended. Don't understand what has changed? For the record I wouldn't want to use our no 16 pick on Ben either.

So you have to nominate for the first draft you're eligible for. Cousins was dewhatevered after the ND last year meaning that he was only eligible for the PSD.

Next time he will be eligible for the ND and will have to nominate for it. (Last player I can think of that we recruited this way was Justin Charles. Hmmm... Chaffey?)

Re: Ben Cousins, approach or stand back and let the wowsers have their way?

I'd rather not have him thank you very much. The media would be watching his every move, speculating and scuttlebutting to find a story to prove that Benny hasn't changed his habits (even if he has). His presence would become all consuming, the constant media glare would bring the team and the club down unless extremely well managed, something I don't think many footy clubs are capable of doing. Let him be some other club's PR nightmare.

Re: Ben Cousins, approach or stand back and let the wowsers have their way?

I'm going to stick my neck out and go against the general trend here.

While I would prefer to stay clear of Cousins, there's what I call the Richo factor that makes me wonder if it's worth a go:

  • Whoever gets Cousins will probably get two decent years out of him.
Richo similarly has another two good years left.

Taking into account the current state of our list, if we continue to invest in draft picks and developing our youth, 2011 could be the year we have our best crack at the flag. However, if we added Cousins, this could fast-track our shot at a flag by 12 months, although potentially at the expense of some longer-term success.

Ordinarily I would put the club first, but I can't help but think if there was one player who deserved to be put ahead of the club it's Richo and maybe it's worth a risk if we thought it could deliver him a premiership medallion.

As I understand it Ben Cousins CANNOT nominate for the PSD.

He has to nominate for the ND.
My understanding is he currently can't nominate for either draft until the AFL allow him to be re-registered or something along those lines.

He'll be 30 or close to it when he comes back, unless you thought the Premiership window was going to open in the next year or two it wouldn't be worth the hassle. That's not us. Pass.

Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Hi All

Just read this in the papers. I read the Robbo talk back segment too and he seems to think the Doggies may get him in the pre-season draft. Robbo (for what his opinion is worth) says the Tigers wont attract him and that TW wont consider as we are rebuilding and may not appreciate drafting a 30 year old.

He goes on to say that Ben may not consider the Tigers either as they are not where he would want them to be so may look for a team about to play finals.

My thoughts - it would be great to have a leader in the team to teach the kids about tough footy. Cuz is a very hard trainer and we see what Judd has done for Scum - lifted them a cog with his training and never say die attitude in games - he lifts the team when they are behind. We need some of that. The risks are there I know but if Cuz is fit and healthy by next year then I see no reason not to consider and make a play for him - if for no other reason that to be a teacher of our young guns.

As I understand it he will have to nominate for the National Draft and therefore clubs won't be able to wait until the PSD. If I was a doggies supporter I'd be pissed off if they wasted a ND pick on him, they got enough recycled players last year and their midfield doesn't need him.

But I assume he'd consider the Blues or Essendon, clubs in similar or worse position to the Tigers, what a load of crap.

Re: Ben Cousins Returns to Footy

Did Ben himself rule out Richmond or was that someone else's opinion?

What if we win 7 of the last 10 games and win a final?

We'll be seen as the rising force of the competition, similar to Hawthorn last year.
