PRE 2022 Phantom Draft

Stuff the Hawks  ,l hope he becomes a Tiger,,he's a good player ,who got better as the year went.
He starred in the SANFL u18 grand final, and played a couple of decent reserve matches, also played well at the champs.

Yeah I'd be happy for the Tigers to take him. Do you see a bit of Lambert in him?

Not tempted by the mercurial Shadeau Brain?
Rookie pick.

My picks was more a wish list. I think we have the perfect opportunity now to put two project talls on our list. Low risk - high reward.

But in reality I think we go for best available and don’t think it will be KPP’s.

I think Barnett is every chance to be the best of the SA talls for the simple fact he can take a heavy contested mark with guys jumping into his back. I like forwards who are prepared to take a knock. His duality by being able to play KPF and Ruck also helps.

Keeler more athletic and Lemmey maybe more a “natural” talent, but I like Barnett for the aforementioned.
Yeah give me a ruck who can take a contested mark around the ground any day. Also like that Barnett gets involved in linkup play. That’s the ultimate. He’s already 202, if he gets to 205-207 and remains athletic, keeps his ability to stay mobile, he’s a bit of a unicorn.

If you asked me who is the best replacement for Goldy I'd say Barnett, very similar in style, work rate & athleticism.

Of the players that have been selected in this mock draft bullus , which of the players selected on or after our picks would you take for Richmond looking back

Scully I'm not sure about, he reminds me of Zach Sproule who battled hard for years but still couldn't make the grade, there's just something about these tall lanky guys that doesn't really translate well to being a key forward. I think we've gone down this path numerous times, McBean, Vickery, Coleman-Jones, I tend to think it's better to leave it to others to take the risk & if a guy like Lobb emerges then try and lure him out of his contract.

I think the highest success rates with these late picks would be defenders, small forwards & rucks. Going on that basis I think McCallum would be a good pick-up, he's almost key position height & has good athletic traits. Verrall is another I like, his contested game is elite and his outstanding leap compensates for his lack of height. Lovelock looks the best of the small forward options although I would also consider Seth Campbell from Tassie, he's another slipping under the radar.

SYDNEY
16- Henry Hustwaite
19- Lewis Hayes
41- Ethan Phillips
71- Kaelen Bradtke

1 mid, 2 key defenders and 1 tall forward.
it wasnt necessarily a deliberate strategy to get 2 tall backs but i reckon they fill a list need well. Phillips should be right to play in 2023, and ready to own a key position in 2024. while Hayes will take a few years. This times well with Rampe on the way out, and then McCartin close to entering the later part of his career. By 2026 this pair will be a strong intercepting key defensive combo, 2nd in the league only to the triple premiership pairing of Gibcus and Balta. Hustwaite was best available, a tall strong mid who wins his own ball, and Bradtke was free throw at the dart board at pick 71- a strong athletic key forward.

He looks that type, the hf/mid ,he's good overhead and uses the ball well, has that turn of speed to get out of traffic .
He seems a very composed player too,he's a late 18 year old ,he's 179cm and 72kg ,so once he builds up ,he will have even more impact as a mid,and he can run all day.

Looking at the state SA combine, he didn't make the top 5 in the 20m sprint.
Is he slow?

No he's not slow, you only have to look at his games to see that, has good breakaway speed,l don't worry about the combine ,they are tested indoors with runners on.
The only test l sort of take notice of is the endurance.

Western Bulldogs

Pick 12. Matthew Jefferson (195cm, 84 kg)

One of the aspects of Jefferson's development that has gone largely unnoticed is the fact he was playing with stress fractrures in the foot, that makes his 7 goal performance & 2.9 goal season average all the more remarkable. I think once in an AFL system Jefferson stands a reasonable chance of catching Cadman as the best tall forward prospect, his marking is outstanding, he works hard both ways, his form against Collingwood reserves was solid without being spectactular & his form at both state level & in the NAB Cup earned him team of the year honours. I think selecting him in a draft so even is a particularly well weighted risk & one which could pay handsome dividends in 4 years time.

Players considered : Hewett went early in the mock but I would happily call his name as I believe he has the tools to become the best midfielder.

Pick 24. Jacob Konstanty (176cm, 70kg)

This was a line ball decision & was largely influenced by going tall at pick 12. Konstanty is the best small forward in the pool, he's agile, he runs a 3 sec sprint & also has a very good tank. His defensive pressure is elite & whilst many recruiters don't place too much value on this aspect I tend to look at hunters like Cyril Rioli & more recently MRJ & heavily weight their defensive contributions. Konstanty is also a recent AFL convert, huge upside & if he transitions to the midfield you may get something approaching Dayne Zorko.

Players considered : Lachlan Cowan went a pick earlier and I'm a very big fan & wouldn't hesitate to call his name. Harry Barnett is another I like & if Hewett is the player selected at 12 then Barnett likely becomes the logical pick at 24.

Pick 38. Harry Lemmey (200cm, 95kg)

For a player tipped to go first round at the start of the year this is a relative bargain & you can see things drop off considerably after about pick 40. He's been accused of being soft but I don't buy that, talls are always hot & cold, particularly junior ones growing into their own skin. Lemmey's fall from grace has been primarily at state level but his form at SANFL reserves level has been fine. 11 marks in West Adelaide's finals campaign should allay a few fears about being timid, he also hit the scoreboard registering 3.3 in his two appearances. Against Collingwood reserves he struggled early but worked himself into the game by pushing up the ground. This is exactly what I wanted to see and he has all the hallmarks of a hardworking centre half forward. I think it would be an oversight to focus only on his patchy form at state level, forwards tend to have down days & sometimes down years, Jack Darling went from chocolates to boiled lollies in his draft year but has proven the naysayers wrong. Lemmey might just be a similar type bargain.

Players considered: Ethan Phillips was my back-up plan, best under 23 in the VFL & a player with ridiculous intercept numbers.

Pick 68. Nick Madden (204cm, 112kg)

It's a bit of a raffle here but Madden stood out as the perfect project player & the type of combative personailty that should thrive in a professional environment. His ruck work is second only to Barnett & his overall production is exceptionally good for a ruckman. Being a handball first big man one may question his kicking ability but I don't see major technical flaws, he tends to hack his kicks out of congestion but when freed up and in space he looks reasonably assured. Tank & speed aren't pluses at this stage but this will almost certainly improve once he sheds some kilos, he's coming in from similar weight to Sean Darcy, that probably means he'll be AFL ready in 2-3 years.

Players considered: Seth Campbell, another Tassie small forward or if I'm going for a defender then Jason Gilbee would be my selection.

No qualms with the quality of your picks, bully. But reckon you've gone a bit too tall overall for the Dogs given they have English, Naughton, Ugle-Hagan and Darcy all 25 and under. It feels like you've picked the highest on your board at each pick. But with Dunkley's departure, Libba the wrong side of 30, and Bont, Treloar and Crumples hitting their late 20s, I feel at least one mid was in order. You're rightly a Jefferson fan but Ginbey was arguably the pick the Dogs needed at 12. Having gone the way you did with your first two, your man Clohesy or Dowling might have been the go at 38.

That said, you'd be well within your rights to argue that with this draft the Dogs should be set for talls for the foreseeable future and can pick the eyes out of mids in the next few years. As an adherent of the 'get the spine in place' philosophy I can't be too critical, but as said just feel you could have done with at least one mid in place of one of your talls.

That's certainly one way to look at things but the Dogs still have one of the best midfields in the business, the age profile is creeping up but it's far from being panic stations this particular draft. Dunkley's defection has been dealt with, Konstanty slots straight in & partners with Khamis as the two small forward options. Madden slots in for Stef Martin and Lemmey becomes the spare parts player when the bench gets expanded to 5. With Bont, Macrae, Libba, Smith, Treloar & West I don't see a player like Dowling or Clohesy being essential, certainly not as urgent as some are suggesting. Next year the Dunkley bounty will reap a midfielder, that is the longer term projection but for now I think it's better to load up on talls. If Jefferson goes earlier then it's Hewett so I suppose that gets sorted a year earlier than planned. I also think the state leagues could be utilised if the midfield suffers, I've mentioned Browne a few times & he's a player who could rival the output of Dowling. Ginbey looks good in that Zac Jones type of way but I don't consider him to be as damaging as Hewett, I'd rather stick to a best available strategy with picks this high.

That's where we disagree. The Dogs' midfield is overrated for mine, as shown when our thin midfield has kicked their heads in. Libba and Dunkley were their two key ball-winners. Crumples is a fraudulent stat-padder and Treloar an outside butcher. Bont and Smith are class, yep, but they conceded 16 straight goals or whatever it was to Melbourne in the grand final. Strong midfields don't do that. They beat up on minnows is my view.

I don't see Ginbey as the panacea to the issues you have outlined, Macrae is also a premiership mid, easy to forget the Doggies have won the silverware with him playing a critical role. The main issue I have with Ginbey is he's not a confimred high production mid, at senior level he's a 10 touch player, not once did he register 20 touches in the WAFL under 18s or senior level. At least with Hewett you have a player who has demonstrated a very high ceiling, 33 disposals in the reserves his high point but also his 29 disposal 2 goal game at state level another reminder of his ample ceiling. If one was to take Ginbey over Jefferson they could potentially be falling into a flanker trap. I used the example of Zac Jones because that's about where I rate Ginbey's kicking & overall impact. Granted, he's a hard nut with the ability to barge his way through traffic but I'll take the guy with the sweet sidestep over the battering ram.

Looking at this draft I don't see a plethora of midfielders, last year was the year to load up, this year seems to have excellent depth with the tall stocks. By getting them in early you can build up some residual value and on trade any superfluous spare parts. In the meantime if the Doggies are struggling for mids then grab some top ups from the state leagues. Dowling or Clohesy are solid selections but they won't be thrusting the Doggies into premiership calculations.

sorry for delay folks.

pick 31 Carlton selects Anthony Munkara, 186cm, 77kg. Allies/ West Adelaide/ Tiwi Bombers. Forward

Talented, fast, x-factor everywhere, and is not just dual-sided, but ambidextrous. Risky pick, but we're willing to take it. We need X-factor. (off the record, Bonus of this pick is it pisses off Dudoro).

Here is a feature on Munkara @tigersnake :

I propose a game, associated with the above, all phantom club recruiters invited but anyone can have a crack. Your favourite, highest rated, top 5 players. Not the players you think will go top 5, the players you would draft 1-5 if you had the first 5 picks. Will be part of the above for posterity. Have a think on it and decide and we'll post tonight or tomorrow.

Actually this won't be that interesting, everyone, including me, will post variations on 8-10 players.

1 Cadman, 2 Ashcroft, 3 Hewitt, 4 Sheezel, 5 Humphrey.

would have liked to fit McKenzie in. But unfortunately for me on this particular occasion, I couldn't.

Also, to make it more interesting. Most likely 3 busts.

1. Tsatas. I just don't see it. Competent, just OK at the things he should be very good at for the level of hype. And kicking lacks penetration.
2. Ginbey. as above. Substance just doesn't match they hype. Moves well and is a great size, unconvinced on his footy. I'd hazard a guess he has an excellent manager.
3. Edward Allan. as above but more so, great athlete. But is he a footy player? Based on what I've seen, its a hard don't know, soft no.

Tsatas and Ginbey might be OK players, but will disappoint as first rounders. Allan won't make it

Pretty good list, I like your top 5 apart from Humphrey, there's something about his kicking which raises a few alarm bells, I think he's more Begley than than De Goey but I may be wrong.

Tsatas is a star athlete, hard to see him failing given his outstanding work rate, his inside game isn't eye catching but nor is Josh Kelly's, both players get by on outstanding outside capabilities. Kicking isn't terrible, perhaps not Josh Kelly standard but good enough, I think this will be passable at AFL level. I had to go back to under 17s to get a clearer picture on Tsatas, I wasn't sold initially but I've warmed to him considerably since taking into account his entire body of work. He has represented Australia at hurdles, his clearance work is good at 5 a game and his 12 contested possessions comparable to players like Hewett. Big upisde in my opinion.

My top 5 would be Ashcroft, Tsatas, Sheezel, Wardlaw & Cadman. I also love Hewett by the way, he was central to my push in protecting our first rounder, if Jefferson gets snapped up he would be a wonderful fall-back option. I think his upside is close to the top 5 & he ticks all the necessary boxes apart from two way running, that can be fixed with a few years in the system. This is probably one area where Tsatas has a significant edge & is the reason I have him ranked so high.
