west coast are the biggest cheats - bigger than carlton. they've rorted the system for years - from drug taking to tanking to draft tampering. odds on they'd have numerous 3rd party deals under the table. no wonder chimps dad didn't want his son to go there. fair chance they told him to play up a bit and have a few photo's with a ciggy and a can. they will do anything to win a flag.

Yep.

they are getting a bit carried away tho when they get players already on their list to tank pre-draft.

Most clubs understandably go "best available" in first round.
Sounds like Gundy to me.
Whilst he has plenty of promise, I still don't think Vickery has proven himself to be anything but unreliable and injury prone, to date. Remains a risk of not delivering imo.
I like Griffiths, but am worried about Astbury's lack of pace preventing him having a decent career.
Elton is like a raw, gangly two year old colt - all arms and legs, and 2 years + away, if he makes it.
Overall, I remain concerned our key tall prospects dont offer the individual flexibility and all round skills required to hit the big time.
So for that reason I would be happy to reach for another tall who looks like he could be elite - and as they just dont last till the second round, if Gundy slips to pick 9 I'd grab him.

interesting (hypothetical) debate though whether we could play Maric, TV and Grundy all in the one team. I havent seen Grundy play so i will have to defer to those that have, but to me if he is, or will be, as good up forward as TV then they could all fit. if on the other hand he would play forward like say a David Hille or Jon Giles- as in couple of kicking a few goals, taking a few marks but not a true forward- then they wouldnt all play together.

Grundy looks a bit like Kurt Tippett when playing up forward, he has huge hands and excellent judgement. He's still a work in progress but has shown amazing progress in 12 months, kicking 3 goals on 3 seperate occasions at the u/18 carnival.

wish we would. Starting by drafting B.Grundy Pants, Spencer White and some super duper monster goal-kicking mid with more tricks than Dynamo and more X-factor than a Xanthosa mulitipleX from Xavier.

i reckon this debate is hilarious. Imagine having to have one of these blokes rucking/ff at Coburg. Gee, thats a big problem. A bit like having to sell the beach house at Byron cause you cant pay the rates.

Having one of them running around at Coburg is not the problem. It's having Macrae or Wines or whoever we miss out on when we take Grundy, running around for Carlton in round one.

The choice of Grundy or Wines, for short term impact I would go Wines as he will add immediately to the team, but a better longer term impact, and my vote is for Grundy as I think 2+ years he will be the better choice.

not sure if we will have this choice on Thursday.

Why should they play in the same team together?

Grundy is a 17/18yo who is still growing into his body and can afford to run around in the 'maggoos' for 2 to 3 years before making his senior debut at 20/21yo. He won't reach his peak till 25-27yo.

By that time, Maric will be nearing to well past 30yo and it will be perfect timing to rotate them.

This is what I mean by taking a long term view of list management, not just next year.

Spot on Immortal Spirit. Grundy's a must if we get so lucky. Bang, ruckmen done for a decade. Cream off the mids for drafts to come.

Yeah, groom him for 3 years at coburg and watch him walk out back to SA..
Get someone ready to go tommorow, don't worry about 3 years time.
Ridiculous

Hit the nail on the head, but then you are saying Grundy will be a better forward than Griffiths, Astbury or Elton, guys that are actually considered real forwards and not ruckmen playing forward, because they are the ones that will be competing for the third tall spot.

Again I ask the question, is there a precedent of a club playing 2 genuine rucks as part time forwards? I can't think of one.

I know nothing about any of the juniors, so I cant comment on Grundy, but if they rate him highly as a ruck/forward, I wouldnt be using those 3 as a reason to pass him by.

Griffiths is a massive question mark (I rate him, but still have my concerns), and I havent seen anything in either Astbury or Elton to suggest they are going to be long term options at this stage.

To me, it would be like passing up a juicy steak, because you have a chop and two sausages in the freezer.

That's ridiculous.

We all know that the Coburg alliance finishes at the end of 2013.
From 2014, he'll be in a Richmond guernsey playing on Punt Road.

But, if your idea of list management is only looking at next year, then I concur that Grundy is certainly not your answer.

Dear oh dear. I agree with you Zips. It's all about the window, ours is coming, we need a bunch of kids who will peak in 2-3 years time.

In 3 years time, Vickery could be our number 1 ruck, with Grundy in the current Vickery role.

Maric might be stuck in the 2s

We have a very good core of players, this years draft should be like putting the icing on the cake.
An extra midfielder, an extra defender, an extra forward.

Over the last 20 years we have just pitched ruckman from other clubs very easily, there is no reason now to change that.
I'm not a fan of picking up SA kids, seem to be softer then kids from Victoria

Good point.

I assume that Grundy doesn't mind where he plays AFL footy.
He may have a clear preference for remaining or returning to SA.
Only the recruiting staff can accurately guess this.

It something that, hopefully, Francis can shed light on in the future.

Besides, Grundy is likely to go prior to our pick.

Also, prior to this Grundy temptation,
even I saw that our drafting targets for this ND should be 2 junior mobile tall forwards and 2 junior midfielders.

I must stay focused!
