You wouldn't mind Leigh as coach?

I'd have him before Malthouse. I lean towards a Buckley or Hird but Matthews if neither of them want it.

It's a complete guessing game for me though. I think the club can go through all the processes they want but it's still going to be a lottery as to who would prove the most successful.

I rate Buckley and have been super impressed with Hird on On The Couch. Matthews has the track record and seems like a better bloke than Malthouse (not that that would be hard).

We won't know if the right choice is made for a few years yet.

Agree, do you know if Andy Collins is really a possible GPB. Think he'd be good get, but perhaps not ahead of a couple of others, especially Williams!

IIRC, Phantom has Collins' bio in one of his threads, to my knowledge I think he is contracted to the end of 2010.

Williams no doubt is in front of Collins, but Andy is the one for me if we can't the Buckley's, Malthouse's or Hird's.

You'd reckon a SANFL contract could be got around if a AFL spot was offered to him

Indeed it will be.

I think there will be greater anticipation this time around since luring The Great Salesman - Wallarse!

I'm not privy to Collin's contract but there has do be some sort of 'get-out' clause, wouldn't you think so? I'm not saying that Andy is dead set for the job because there is a strong field he is contending with, but what I like about him is he comes from a successful culture, has played back pocket :), did well at Coburg, and has heaps of coaching experience over the border.

Could a new coach do a Hafey and take a list with players who lack direction from the pits to the top in a short period. Collingwood came from nowhere in 79 with a poor list to reach the finals in 1980.?

The younger players have shown they can push sides and hold their own. COuld Jade take them above that?

If he can get the players to lift and play for each other does that make him a good coach?

Collingwood were a kick away from winning the flag in '79 DHN!!

You're thinking of 76 (spoon) to 77 (runners up). Hafey's first year at Scum.

Not out of the question DHN. We've had some scintillating 'one' quarters. If these can become two instead of one, and backed up with another solid quarter as well, why not?!

That's why a Hird / Sheedy ticket works for me - new enthusiasm with considered guidance.

Thanks GPB (great pic), agree with your comment re AC. Though I can;t help thinking Clarkson vs Wallace/Eade and Collins vs Malthouse / Williams etc ;)

All the little voices inside me are repeating Hardwick.

Sorry, you'll all have to vote again. I reset the votes and added the other coaches people had asked for, aside from Huppatz. If we're going to have another one of these polls we may as well do it right.

I went for Malthouse simply becuase I think we have a better chance of fixing the culture around the club with a proven hard task master.

In saying that though, I am choosing to ignore the off field culture issues both WCE and the Pies have had.

I agree we need a hardnut, its about the only thing we havent tried. Was an ex-Tiger premiership player so surely there'd be some sort of sentiment in the back of his heart somewhere. Just think all these new untried coaches are a bit risky for the Tigers. We have tried enough of them.

Hird with Sheedy his acknowledged mentor!

You have certainly jumped on board that ticket haven't you mate :hihi

You are a very switched on football mind, what makes you so sure James Hird has what it takes to be the right coach for Richmond?

This interests me....

Flattery will get you everywhere - how'd it go with Rachel? >:D ;D

Have you read Hirdy's book?

Hird is driven to succeed, not just participate. But I acknowledge he is 'untried' as much as anyone is untried. Hence Sheedy - be more than handy to have around in his first year.

Our list doesn't demand a ready to go coach IMO - it needs a teacher and motivator. Hird has done that as captain with great aplomb. Mark Williams on the other hand might be a great teacher too, but he could be tempted to do another Wallace and go for gold too early. It needs another two years minimum before we are a finals contenders - well that's my view anyway. It might take us 4 years to get a flag (historically needs a list with 3000 games under it's belt), and we don't have enough quality 25-27 year olds to get us there yet.

There's more but that'll do until you come up to the good state in July. Cya then ;D

I would really like this rollercoaster to stop, steady as she goes please. Get the review done, appoint a coach before the other teams ffs and let's get on with it!

Well said.

Look the thing is there is a number of outstanding potential coaches, we certainly have done well to be looking for a coach at this point in time, which in turn makes it absolutely vital, absolutely to get this right.

James Hird has intrigued me. He was a favorite player of mine, and yes read his book too. He is certainly an impressive person.

Then there is Damian Hardwick, who has had experience and done a lot of studying and is ready to go.
Nathan Buckley, as impressive as Hird and cut from a similar cloth, just wants to succeed. Very impressed that he has gone to Notre Dame college to further his development in coaching.
Ken Hinkley has high raps on him from good football people.
Todd Viney who I had a conversation with a mate who is employed at Hawthorn and said he is greatly missed and put a correlation between the defensive aspects of last year and this year and he is the reason.

I could go on, and on.

What I am saying is I don't want to head hunt. Go through the process and get the right guy for Richmond. For once in my lifetime I would like this football club act in a professional manner. Make me proud that we are not doing things out of the processes of what a professional entity would do.

We just simply have to get this right. Biggest appointment certainly since I can remember.

Also let's not get caught up in the mystic that is Kevin Sheedy, if rumors are true and Dean Laidley has aligned himself with Nathan Buckley that is just as an impressive tandem if ever I have seen one. ;)

Also yes, I will see you up north, cannot wait till the convo, should be just as interesting as last time you were down. ;D
