Welcome Tom Brown

Nothing against the kid.
But why would you use a quality pick (17) on a half back flanker when you know Riewoldt is coming to the end in a couple of years?
Riewoldt retires Van Hooganband takes his spot for the next 10 yrs.
The kids on the site were all over him leading up to the 21 draft and for some unknown reason Clarke & Co make choices that bamboozle.
Our track record is disgraceful. It's coming up to the 10yr anniversary of our last quality 1st rounder Rioli in 2015.
The 5 in 30 is looking like a huge bust. Besides Cibcus none of the others look like they will survive.
Have a read through the 2021 draft thread. Kids on here have better knowledge of the kids then these blokes who are getting paid. It's not good enough.
With Cotch, Jack, Nakas, Grimes all on coming to an end. We had enough picks(35) between 2017-2022 to rejuvenate the list. They have made a meal of it.View attachment 19475View attachment 19474View attachment 19473
Can Vanrooyen play HB? Your answer is right there he’s a forward with no HB skills that’s why we gave him a miss

Poor kid. Pretty clear that he is this decades draft whipping boy, like Conca and Tambling before him. Try to remember that Brown had no say in where and when he was drafted.

Critics get too hung up on individual picks and fail to see the big picture. Gibcus, Clarke and Sonsie could all go on to play 200+ games and all we’ll hear around here is “but why didn’t we take Van Rooyen?!?!!” The critics will also ignore the fact that most other clubs also passed on Van Rooyen at least once too.

A large part of recruiting is a lottery and nobody wins the lottery every time they play. However just like in a lottery, you only need to win big once to offset a lot of losses.

Anyway, give the kid a chance and even if he doesn’t make it, it’s not the end of the world.

This kid needs to come on. Flossy getting closer to the end. Watching Van Rooyen play well for Melbourne makes me a little envious

We have such an unimpressive history of taking smalls over talls.

Tambling - Franklin
Fiora - Pavlich
Corey Ellis - Jake Lever
Higgins (and CCJ) - Oscar Allen (who we were heavily linked to by WA media)
Brown - Van Rooyen

I'd even stretch it a little and go Ben Lennon ahead of Patrick Cripps. Although a midfielder rather than a KPP, Cripps' height is right on the cusp of the argument.

All of these examples involve players taken with high picks within 5 picks of each other, and there will surely be others.

About the only one we probably got right in recent times was Dan Rioli ahead of Harry Himmleburg and Tom Doedee.

It is a historic pattern and it continues to hurt us.

I’m certainly not writing Brown off.
May go on to play 200 games ( although I worry about his lack of aggression) but I would have taken JVR every day of the week based on positional needs.
Imagine our list now with him in it? Would be fairly balanced and complete. Throw in Harry H to round things out.
If Buller becomes a force, I’ll fair dinkum spew up.

Our art is to turn everyone into a half back flanker.
How’s it working out for us?
Someone posted that Dusty could play until he’s 40 on the back flank. Inspired thinking. Also don’t be surprised to find Tommy with a new lease on life when he comes back and plays the DTLD role in defence.
Sigh.

You forgot to add:
ShEdwards- Dawes
Cotchin- Grant
Dusty- Butcher (tho at least we took Griffens over the skinny kids Freo took next)
Vlastuin - Jaksch
Butler- Austin
Short- Mckernan
Castagna- Delaney
Lambert- actually not sure there were any left, after every team overlooked him multiple times

But anyway, this thread is about Tom Brown, not our drafting or the players we could have taken instead.

I love this reflecting *smile*. Tell you what. If I had the chance I wouldn’t change any of those selections prior to 2021. Cause and effect. We won three flags and I’m pretty content with that.

Complacency and full bellies seems to have crept into sections of our supporter base.
Hope it doesn’t permeate through our whole club.
I’m still backing strong and bold.

Cherry picking is always a waste of time.

The fact we took Tambling, fiora etc meant we were garbage for a while and we got Cotchin, Martin and Riewoldt and won 3 flags with them ….

If we had buddy and Pav the 3 time premiership captain and 3 time norm smith medallist probably would have played elsewhere

It’s been a long time since I have seen so much angst on here about a young player who has yet to play a game. He was tracking OK during the pre season before he broke his hand, let’s see him play in the seniors first before we work ourselves in a slather. He has had a decent setback so I wouldn’t expect him to play heaps this year tbh.

Van Rooten looks OK at the moment but let’s not get carried away - he has a long way to go, just ask Harry.

Seriously ?

I simply don’t want to waste a whole lot of time whinging and moaning about something that cannot be changed. I prefer to support the players we have.

Whether you or I think the decisions we make as a club are right or wrong has no effect on the footy club at all, and neither should it.
