I think in 3 years time the end result will be
195cm 98kgs

Thats a big big boy to try and tackle at his speed

Just on the theme on recent growth, I have it as unconfirmed but on solid authority that Balta has grown 2cm since arriving at RFC and is now a healthy 196cm. Balta at CHB v B. Williams at CHF. That battle would be an athletic masterpiece.

No surprise given that males can keep growing (usually only marginally) up to their mid-20s or so. Tom Derickx grew a huge amount between 18 and 22 from memory.

It's great news if correct though but it further undermines your notion that he can't/won't be introduced into the team to play some relief ruck, along with a range of other roles. It's his versatility which is his strength - as I've posted before - which will allow our coaches to swing him around making it really hard for the opposition to know where he's going to turn up next, and who on earth to match him up with e.g. from a midfield/wing burst to a HFF or FP when Jack or Tom resting.

Yes, maybe a KPB will be his eventual, established position but don't see him pushing out Rance or Astbury for some time yet. It will be cameo roles to launch his career IMO. At 196cm and that weight, strength and good spring, he's an ideal ruck back-up.

(We also are grooming Garth and Miller for KPB roles who can't match Balta's athletic capabilities).

He's 18, looks like a beauty and plays like Cripps/Bontompelli...I'm happy to wait until he has been in the system for 12 months before heaping expectations on him.

Exactly. But 24 months. Just a baby for an AFL tall. Don't heap key position expectations on him yet. Just point him at the football and say, "Go Tiger! Show us what you can do."

Just been reading about Nat Fyfe's early days at Freo and how he was quite skinny but the other players noticed his unusually big hands. Now look at the first day photo and you'll notice something special about Riley... his long fingers. Could be useful for taking a few speccy's.

Times being run for the 2km time trial are a pretty pointless pointer to game stamina and the ability to run out a game.

RCD is a no brainer to me over Stocker if that is the discussion point

I think there might be a bit of truth in that, in the "Draftees first day" video he looked to have a few cm's on RCD.

This doesnt surprise me at the least , Balta was a bottom age player in his draft year and one of the younger players so played mostly as a 17 year old similar to Turner and Bolton.

196/197 is the perfect height for a KPF/KPB with the agility and pace of Balta

Happy to hear that he has grown a few cm , Hope he gets another 1-2 cm more growth

Reminiscent of Carey v. Jakovich?

Yeah, the sun academy blokes pretty much said as much and that the yo-yo is way more telling

It wont surprise me if they ditch the 2km trial.

Heaps of pea-hearted middle distance stars who cant kick seem to be taking up space in programs to me.

But thats not a new debate, and i dunno if the yo-yo will sort footy wheat from chaff.

The best test is pitting the best young footballer against each other in games of footy again and again and again.

What's the YoYo test easy? I'm assuming it's not whether you can do 'Around the world' & 'Walk the Dog'.. ;D

Miller is quicker than Balta. Blistering.

OK, I'll trust you on that because have seen little of Miller live so delighted to hear. Like Miller's potential too and reckon he should also be able to possibly go forward or do a little rucking. But Balta is more the whole package, especially power, marking and kicking. From Bullus on B's thread: "He ran a 2.99 in early season testing" ... and "He ran a 13.4 beep, that would be on par with Cripps when he was drafted." That's quick for his size with reasonable endurance too for his age.

Furthermore, also same post: "Given Grigg has been our second ruck it wouldn't be unreasonable to see Balta take up that position. If given some continuity I'd say 2-3 years."

Anyway, feeling guilty, this is RCD's thread.

Its brutal repeat 20?m sprints with direction change(up and back) at increasing speed.

Im not sure, but someone suggested the number of each level corresponds to km/hr. So if you get a 21, you are repeat sprinting at 21km/hr with about a 5 second rest between repeats.

By the time you get to 21 (where 17 year olds hoping to be drafted need to be), i reckon youde have done about 50 sprints with a 5 second rest between each.

Theres a beep to start the sprint after the rest period, and if you dont get over the 20m line before the next beep, corresponding to the ever increasing speed, your out! And that number is your score.

Kind of like shuttle runs at footy training in the old days but more brutal cause instead of going slower and slower, you go faster and faster.

My lad tumbled over and missed the 16.4 beep, but Rainsy knows he plays like shane edwards and inducted him anyway ;D

Having said that, endurance is his weakness.

Not sure if it's been posted here before but when we Drafted him Fantasy Freako tweeted that Cripps U18 CP % was 63%, RCD was 64%

Miller ran 2.91 at the Combine. Won the agility test too.

Early last season I was thinking he had very poor footy nous and was a probable delisting after contract was up, now with a second pre season under his belt and the improvement he showed in the second half of the season, his now my Smokey to debut , bit of a unique footballer , I actually see a bit of D Grimes about him

Danger territory too.
