Welcome to the Tigers - Connor Menadue

The kid has been not much more than effluent in previous seasons. Let's give him a chance to step in and adjust to a) his teammates (and them to him) and b) pick up the pace of the game again. Remember it's usually a fair bit faster in the opening 6 weeks of the season until the grounds start to soften and bodies tire.

I thought he did OK, with lots of scope for improvement. The main bit I saw was a little switch flicked where he thought he might be able to compete at the level. If he gets a chance next week, I won't begrudge it. However, I'd expect him to be a 4 quarter contributor next week given his age, rather than a cameo performer.

We always knew he'd take time, it was even in the video. At least 3 years Blair said.

Quite a few opinions on here seem to mimic the scoreboard.

Can’t break tackles, can’t use his strengths. Compare him to Short, who consistently gets around a tackler. Menadue is a straight-line runner in a 360 degree game.

Kid, I like your posting. But Short does not "consistently get around a tackler". He consistently panic kicks to avoid physical contact. Zero panicky moments from Connor last night. Zero rushed panic dump kicks to the opposition. Unlike pretty much every Short game.

Give him a run at it and feed him Short's diet of easy kicks and compare the pair then.

I see what you mean, agree when Connor has space he’s significantly better, hence being a pick in the 30’s compared to a rookie prospect. I should’ve said the difference between the two is Short’s diet of easy kicks are possible because he’s mentally competent enough under pressure to dispose in these situations when Menadue cannot. Hence we never get the chance to compare them because they don’t get an equal number of kicks. It’s a total prerequisite to be exceptionally mentally strong, but in general AFL people make excuses for outside players. I see the word potential as an assumption that someone’s lack of mental strength (pretty stable trait) is explained by their lack of physical strength (more flexible trait).

E.g. Blair said 3 years because of his size... but look at Rioli’s size. The physical comparison assumes similar mental toughness and that’s where the error lies. I think it’ll help Connor if he’s fully expected to be mentally tough and we don’t make excuses in this area due to his physical limitations... rookie players never have the luxury of such excuses so they’re forced to be mentally exceptional... Maybe Emma can fix it!

Bingo. For a fifth year player that's been on the list so long, 13 touches and one kick doesn't get a pass grade. Take out one great kick, barely impacts the game. Lonng way to gooo. I've seen enough but he will get his chance. If he gets dropped for Naish who is knocking on the door, it's over.

So Scoop we should drop all of the other players who got the same or less possessions than Connor?

Even the premiership players?

Yeah, but how many metres did it gain? Shorty would have gained 60 metres and a throw in. Menadue only gained 5 metres and a set shot from 35 out straight in front.

I was talking to snake before, and a thought dawned on me.

we rolled the dice. BalmeDimmacellaleppaflyKings have googled 'Byron Bay Bumper Stickers' during the week for game plan research

and said to the team

"dance like there's no-one watching boys, magic happens, be the change you want to see in the world"

and this has suited Brando, Connor and $hai to their boot studs.

they were liberated and they shone, to varying lumens.

Hopefully, this leads to a hybrid game plan of process/rules/structure with a few blokes licensed to dance?

I don't know if it is possible. It could be like perpetual motion?

That was arguably the best kick in the game wasn't it et?

It was out of that one, or Bakes final dime kick to Lynchy with 1 pt in the game.

Both were superb, both were by inexperienced kids, both under furnace pressure.

see above point.

bearing in mind Ive been a harsh critic of late, and with this game taken in isolation,

I couldn't disagree more.

as snake put it, this game was a rebirth.

and during rebirths, little things matter.

Diameters of cervixes, for example.

and Connors kick was, like I said, whitfieldesque (Whitfield takes my breath away)

premierships are won by single kicks

Hopefully he isn't known for one kick ala the Corey Ellis pass to Deledio.

He kicked a poor one to the disadvantage of Kmac late in the final qtr that had the ball coming back. He wasn't the worst but imagine he makes way for Houli.

I picked up a paint brush once, guess I'll move to the South of France and go all Chopper Reid on me old self.

your being a bit dogmatic scoopdog

I’m not a fan but he did okay against Port. Didn’t seem as panicky as he usually is in the seniors. And that kick into the middle was a thing of beauty.

He probably deserves a run of games but I’m not sure he’ll get it. Dusty is back and someone has to make way. You can make arguments that it should be Castagna or Graham but Dimma has put a lot of faith in those 2 over the past couple of years so I’d be surprised if he dropped them.

I'd keep him in for next week, and hopefully the following week too.
And as you said Riddles, Connor was calm and composed. That is the important point, with maturity and confidence he is performing. He needs another week or 2 to build the belief.
It doesnt matter if he is 5th year, he is still an inexperienced kid. The adage is that a player starts to believe at 30 games.
Connor is on the cusp of becoming an afl player.

Connor plays behind the ball, so for team balance Dusty should replace George
Bachar plays a half in the twos, to strengthen the old man strings. It is a long season, we need Bach in finals, not just in April.

You should post more, delly. Agree with all that, although George led our ferocious man-hunting, so I think he stays. Maybe Graham would benefit from a touch of leather poisoning in the VFL, problem is we have the bye there (why do 3 teams per week have a bye?).

Connor was one of our 7 defenders, so unless Bachar is right he stays. With a 4-day turnaround, I reckon they save Bach for Melbourne.

Stay tuned, don’t think Houli will play. Short break to Dees would be hard to back up after no footy for 3 weeks

If so, I reckon Graham will be first pick.
