Welcome to the Tigers - Connor Menadue

Based only this week, B.Ellis goes before Menadue.

Ellis had -22m gained.
Menadue had over 200m gained. More tackle, one percenters, etc. Ellis was a liability tonight.

Menadue is the least of our problems

Interesting. After watching the replay I thought the same. He was ok. More miffed by team balance at selection than his individual performance.

I know his fans will say he plays a different role when he comes into the AFL side, which is true somewhat, however for me he just doesn’t play with anywhere enough dash an flare that his capable at the slower VFL level. Rather get games into others as I think his had enough chances to do better then an ok game, however if we persist I hope he can back himself in and play like it his last chance as it probably will be.

Menadue gets a game ahead of Naish because he is ahead of Naish.

What was wrong with his game last night? Which critical contests did he lose? Who was his opponent? What glaring errors did he make? What targets did he miss? (100% DE, so none. Zilch.) I thought he used the ball quickly, directly, positively, and accurately. 10 teammates had less of the ball. He was even equal-5th in the side for tackles. AFL Player Ratings ranked him our 6th-best on the night.

Ellis, Edwards, Castagna, Higgins, Rioli, Lynch, Caddy, Broad, McIntosh, and probably a few others, were worse than him last night, and plenty more were no better.

Spook, where would you like to see Connor Menadue playing in the Tigers team?

He seemed undersized in his role last night.

I didn’t think he was bad spook, he just never does enough for my liking, it’s all little glimpses here an there, no real solid demand your spot footy , and when your a flashy outside type he has to do more. I can understand why he has his fans, but as a whole he just doesn’t have it at the top level for mine. In saying they have any faith in him, give him a wing for a month and let him go head to head with some high quality players

Half-back is his go, tige. Our entire backline was undersized last night, apart from Stack who is a giant. The issue is he is behind Stack, Houli and Edwards as a running small defender, so is first out when Astbury comes back and everyone shuffles down a spot. So, unless Edwards moves back to the midfield, he's likely to miss out.

You've nailed it at the end there, Mr B. Any young player trying to forge his spot needs the confidence that he won't be dropped for taking the game on. Most only get that through a show of faith (continuity), which he's never had much of, but which only the Stacks of the world can flourish without.

Correct, and they were probably worse than Bolton as well who didn't get a lot of it but didn't mess up when he did. I'd swap Edwards with Houli in that list. The Ellis/Houli routine of handballing to someone who is hotter than them just to avoid the heat is very tiresome. But it counts as an effective disposal because the teammate takes possession just prior to being killed.

My biggest issue is this..
In 35 games of snr foot, Connor has never won more than 17 possessions. For an outside player he simply doesn't get to enough contests.
Is it fitness? Desire? Concentration?
I dunno but I think it's a real hurdle for him to overcome if he wants to establish himself as an AFL player.
After 5 years in the system, he's still short of that level as it stands.

Just as likely to send the ball beautifully through the air as he is to get blown away into it himself.

One day MCG security will tackle him during a match thinking a child ran out onto the ground.

Unfortunately, too easy to get beaten. We lack outside replacements until Grigg or Short come back.

I disagree he's never had much continuity spook. Someone posted today on Twitter that over the past few seasons he's had several strings of consecutive games but again has really failed to cement his spot. The like of Menadue & Markov have never got near what Stack has done.

Played 9 in a row start of 2016 and 6 of 7 late in 2017 where I think he was starting to be consistent. Has done nothing since mind you.

Bingo. A player in year 5 is having zero impact on games, how long do you wait? Talk of him being able to play the Short role has proved folly.

We are putting time into a guy who has been in holding pattern since 2017. No improvement. We've just seen what Stack and Ross can do when unleashed.

Why wouldn't we want to go again?

Disagree half-back is his go, unless it's purely the Houli role. And in reality we have Houli & Short both in front of him offensively who provide as little physically as Menadue does. He has zero presence, a couple of times he was too easily out-positioned in marking contests. Albeit he was against a larger opponent, but there was no aggression to compete. Compare him to the intensity of Rioli, who is smaller.

If you are going to be a running player surely you have to get a bit of it and do some important stuff? His whole "memorable" body of work comes down to one kick against Port Adelaide. It's not enough.

Agree.
