Welcome to Richmond - Jayden Short

Is Rioli better at HB than Short was in B n F year? That is effectively what has happened. They are preferring Rioli it seems. Baker also but plays a bit different to other 2
Both really good. Hard to split them.

Got ur tin hat on TBR? Got a feeling there's gunna be some incoming headed your way.

Sometimes it needs to be said TM.

The bloke is a seriously elite footballer who would have 17 other clubs sitting in sewerage for a week just to watch one of his turds float past, if it meant the chance to get him.

We signed him to a 5 year contract. That is a peak Cotchin level contract.

A lot of the commentary about him on here is too ignorant to even dignify with an argument. It's the same sort of level as people who yell out 'man up' at the footy.

TBR Goes BANG, ouch...

FWIW I rate Shorty and have not added or responded to any negative stuff in this thread at all.

I do think Dimma and coaches are trying to work out where best to use him though, we lost a lot of depth over past few years and with the recent drafting and time we now have really good depth again IMO, will be really interesting to see where he settles.

“Just kick it long” is better.

The dissecting in this thread of some of Shorts challenges this year is excellent analysis.

Just because you disagree doesn't make it wrong. ;)

Why are people “jumping on” and making Short such a “whipping boy” ?

Sure are some haters out there….:ROFLMAO:

When you read this thread you start to understand how many people are wandering around out there with no idea about the game.
1. Where do you start him rd.1?
2. Were you there on Friday?

I have absolute total respect for Short, hopefully he will play down back with Bakes and Rioli. However I don't think he cuts it as a mid against the best mids. Pinch-hitter maybe but not top 5 mid until injury arrives to other mids.
Does that mean I have no idea?

Short had most disposals, most inside 50s and most kicks for us last year. Averaged 24.4 disposals last year just behind Prestia on 24.8. Also averaged more kicks per game and inside 50s per game than any other player in our list last year.

Not in our best 22? Please..

Yes I was there Friday and I'm certainly not judging anyone on that performance. It's a practice match in February.

As for where he plays in round one, he is a proven elite half back, has shown he has the potential to be an elite midfielder and could easily play on a wing as well.

He's been to one centre bounce last year when all of a sudden he started playing in the midfield about 6 or rounds in. It was hardly a throughly planned transition.

Despite that he was still good enough to show he could collect elite numbers in there. He is an absolute star, not just of our team but of the competition.

Some might argue that is Short's mantra, if not remit. ;)

Spot on, Merv. Some being a bit precious. Is Short above criticism? If you have Rioli and Baker ahead of him at half-back, and wonder where Short fits (even while posting that you think he'll play every game) do you have no idea?

Valid points raised, IMO.

He’s not as good as Rioli at HB because he can’t hit a target and Baker is the lock down defender that he’s not.
He starts on the bench for mine.

B. Grimes Tarrant Balta.
HB. Rioli Vlastuin Baker.
C. McKintosh Hopper Pickett.
HF. Bolton Riewoldt Martin
F. MRJ Lynch Cotchin
F. Nankervis, Taranto Prestia
BENCH. Broad Short Miller Cumberland Ross.

Apologies Graham and Clarke

Thanks for tbe argument!
I agree re wing, and suggested elsewhere would have loved to see him have a run there on Friday ahead of Ross, and put Ross through the middle. Short has great wing attributes, even forward again.
He didn’t have much luck Friday kicked a beautiful goal but Unp paid a BS dangerous tackle against Nank.
I’m not advocating him out of the team, just wondering where he is going to fit. He started well as a mid last year but fell away. He was looking for some cheapies on Friday , chip licks sideways etc.
The only place I really disagree with you is how highly he is rated as a mid, especially with the new recruits.
Once again this year will be an eye opener!

The issue for us is that we have 3 very high quality small running backs in DRioli, Baker and Short. Playing all 3 in the backline makes us too short (no pun intended). All 3 are now on long term contracts.
Short has shown he can play midfield, Baker has shown he can play both mid and forward and DRioli has of course been a small forward.
The problem in my mind is that all 3 play their best footy in the backline
It is an interesting problem for our selectors.

Add to this the fact that Grimes often goes to the most dangerous small forward.

Pair those three with Balta, Grimes and Vlossy, and it's not too bad.

Miller slides into the rotation. Short spends minutes in the midfield.
