Welcome Josh Gibcus

Besides his marking, best play of the night was when Melb surged forward, he stopped chasing oppo, turned and took an intercepting mark.

My future backline has a Nyuon in it. Leave Balta up forward.

Don’t care what the rest of the round produces - that’s the Rising Star winning performance by JG.
Won't happen. For a team that won 3 of 4 flags with youth around, we never win it.

Having Vlastuin and Gibcus back is a delight. Both can intercept and both can attack from defence. I think he's a better player with Vlastuin there, and he was playing very well when Vlastuin was injured.

We can build a very solid defence now, so we need to concentrate on developing the mids and forwards.

DS
Spot on - our issues are 1. midfield quality/depth/class (fix that first) & 2. Forwards - hard to properly asses as midfield delivery is so poor.

I think there scoring was as a result of pressure.
An injury or two to Melbourne at the end of the year will change there outlook. They are now the hunted.

The resting of him was totally unnecessary.

As good as he is Scoop, hes still only had 18 years for his bones, muscles and tendons to grow, fuse and strengthen

We want him winning The Cox Plate,

Not the Golden Slipper.

They kicked 23 behinds
We are just lucky Neal Bullen kept missing

They did kick 23 behinds, but bear in mind they have 16 of 33 shots kicked from the pocket. You could kind of see this from the tv images, they constantly were kicking on wider angles than us. Thats good defence and Gibcus was a part of that. We only had 3 from 15 kicked from the pockets, but it was sheer weight of numbers in the end but doesn't take away from the fact that our defence played well. Midfield is easily still our issue.

Fair point. If Petracca, Oliver and Gawn are missing, things will get much more difficult. Melbourne are beneftting from all their good players not missing.

was thinking that last night... that without those 3, what are they?

Then rest him at round 15 not 5. We squibbed it at selection with Vlastuin coming back and got it wrong.

If he has another four weeks like this you reckon he gets rested? Not on your life.

Caesar said he didn't train that week so he may have been injured or something. Agree that if he played in front of Miller we would have won that game.

Yeah I remember that, then say he’s out sore, has a calf, has gastro, severe gout just not managed.

The resting of him was totally unnecessary. Should play the rest of the year.

Footskills what impressed me the most. Was really sound.

Breakout game. Think he ends up a Jeremy Howe type at worst.
He towers over Howe at 196 cm. That’s McGovern’s height - and junior reports say he was a similar kind of markologist. But I’ll take your point about the athletic skillset, as he’s in a different universe to Treacle McGovern there.
I’m penciling him in as McGovern with Howe’s hops.

If the medicos see data that says he rests, he rests.

Its that simple.

the medicos are pros

Theyre like chris waller for humans

Except at essendon, theyre more angus armenassco

Great game by Gibcus last night.

Tarrant has been disappointing. He is too slow to fit into our backline, always seems to be trailing his man. The defenders around him are always confused when he is not where he should be. That was never something that happened consistently with Rance, Astbury, Grimes and Balta. They could always depend on their key backs being close to the leading forward.

Gibcus reminds me of Weitering.
Not because he's a Tiger but Gibcus is a much more rounded players and will eventually surpass Weitering by a fair margin. Weitering has strength and is a good negator. Gibcus has it all. Athleticism. Reads the play. Can mark. Can kick. Can spoil. Has composure.

Kind of how it works though when you are winning flags. Without Martin we simply do not win the 2020 flag. Our injury run was as good as can be expected when we were winning flags. Without it you simply cannot compete for years at a top level.
Look i really do not like the Dees but you have to give them credit for their recruiting and trading. Got it spot on and are now reaping the rewards.

Due to equalisation, keeping a playing list's conditioning in check is the single most important component of giving a club a shot at a premiership. Without a near injury free list, its almost impossible to win a flag
