Watching Ben Cousins

Makes me laugh especially after Round One all the naysayers from other clubs telling us we made a mistake getting him.

Just putting it out there that as good as he is now playing perhaps next year he would be better off playing for a team likely to be in the finals...

I wasn't a fan of getting him but I'll gladly accept the fact that considering what we paid for him, the last pick possible, we have done well so far.

You misunderstand me TigerForce.
I am not opposing Cousins mentoring players. I don't think I have said that anywhere have I?

Footballers get advice from all sorts of individuals during their careers. From Ben, the coach, the assistants, Richo, Jack Riewoldt :hihi, their Dad's etc..
Some will take it & some will have it go over their heads but I find it funny when I see posted that anyone who's out of form needs to speak with Benny and anyone who is in form must have already spoken to him. It's as if he's some kind of messiah to some posters here.

Advice comes from all avenues but it's still up to the individual what they choose to do with it.

If Tambling is finding form, he is the one who should be praised for it. Alternatively if Lid's is dropping off then he's the one who'll wear it.
No one will be telling us Ben's advice must have been poor if he's had a chat with Julian McMahon.

To credit one individual as having such a dramatic impact on their games is just a little OTT for mine.

My original point in the thread was more about on the field rather than chats during the week. I was just pleasantly surprised, having not seen him play live until last weekend, at how much direction and interaction he's having with the players during the game. Stuff like bettering their positions on the field and pointing out a loose man. It's the things that a coach can demonstrate with a white board at the huddles and during the week, but this guy's doing it while the game is going on. And he did it all night on Saturday night. The TVs shown a couple of things but he does it all game. It is like having an assistant coach out on the ground. Maybe it's the stuff captains should be doing, but I've certainly never noticed any of ours going back a fair way spending so much of their own game time helping other players better their games and ultimately bettering the team as a whole.

Agree. What would teams be prepared to offer do you think Kurtzy?

it only makes sense for a contending team, so perhaps late 3rd founder? That will be useful for a team that has to make a lot of list turnover at the end of the year.

we are getting cuz cheaply, but if he keeps playing like he is he needs and disserves one last decent contract next year . We're not in the right stage of development to give up at lot of cap space to keep him. The right thing for everybody might be to let him go.

Cuz is a born leader and it shows all the time on the field. Just finished watching the replay against the weagles, Cuz was doing a lot of talking and directing on the field especially in the first and last quarters and the team listened to him.

A definite MUST player for 2010. Captain for 2010, why not, he's kept his nose clean except for the "bird" and I aren't going to hold that against him.

The only 2 over 30's for 2010 and beyond are Cuz and Richo. Cuz has just got that unique ability to have people listen and do what he wants them to do, plus he leads by example. I'd have him skipper the Club next year, make Deledio VC and put Cotchin and Jackson in the leadership group.
When Cuz hangs up his boots, Richmond should sign him up straight away as the Midfield and Skills Coach, keep him at Tigerland for as long as possible.

Agree with what you say Massal though I doubt hell be captain and I dont think he really needs to be either. He is and will be a leader no matter what, probably one player that does not need extra media attention/spotlight, though I think hed handle it well

A pleasure to watch him play.

The way he was attacking the stoppages on Saturday night was great to watch. He was trying to hit the contest at full speed and come out the other side either with the footy, or with someone on their backside if they got in his way.

His workrate was phenomenal.

A couple of times his work to get himself out of, and through traffic across half back was brilliant.

Agree. Did anyone else see Cuz at one of the stoppages, run between Lids and his tagger to give Lids space to move? It was wonderful and Lids got the ball and then nodded a thanks his way. Showing by example.

Hopefully in another game, Lids will remember that and do it for another kid a few years in and still learning how to shake a tag. This is the type of on-the-job training, if you like, that Cuz is bringing our team and why I believe his legacy will be felt for years after his eventual retirement.

Lol at all those that are praising Cousins. "Sign him up now".. bottom line is people have to realise he is not part of our next premiership and should only be looked at as a learning tool for the other young midfielders. That's all.

I agree with your mentality but it's pretty obvious most don't.
About 160k isn't it? Dirt cheap in retrospect.
I wonder what he'll ask for when he's made skipper on a 3 year contract as some here would give him? ;)

Third rounder would be about right. He'd be one of the few players we could actually trade for picks.
We have to keep strengthening the bottom of the list and as you rightly put he'd be better value to a side closer to the money.

I am rather amazed at the number of people who want to get rid of a player who actually teaches our younger players the right way to go about things on the field. What the...? ???

IMO Cuz should be kept for as long as his body is working well and his attitude is in the right place as he does bring so much more to a young team *ours* than a 3rd, or any later round, pick could possibly give us.

Whilst were at it why dont we also give up Lids and Cotchin to teams that will play finals. :crazy
Who said that we arent playing finals next year? We have to look forward to something and set high targets.
Its just not good enough to think we also need to bottom out again in 2010.
Cuz needs to be signed up for next year as he is leading by example and inspiring our midfielders in the way he plays the game.

If he continues like this the club would be not doing its duty in having the best possible side going forward in 2010.

Lets put his age just aside for now.

His contribution is just starting to show NOW on the field. Our young midfield can learn alot from him.

Lets not forget that he was a former captain, brownlow medalist, premiership player, b& f, AA, Rising star. HE OBVIOUSLY CAN PLAY.

He is getting better and better , more vocal, players are looking up to him, leader on the field with directing where players go to guard a man or guard space etc. He is an invaluable source of information.

We also like to forget that with Cuz being picked up by the club it drove memberships up by more than 5000 and also $ which was invaluable in these tough economic times.

Lastly if he continues as i said , no injuries, keeps doing the right thing on and off field(minor blemish with finger salute i have overlooked now) is contributing as a player(ticks all the boxes) i would even go as far as next year --------------

APPOINTING HIM IN THE LEADERSHIP GROUP OR AS A LEADER (V.CAPT) IN 2010

Is that not good enough reason to sign him up?
