Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

My wife asked me recently "why don't you go to the footy as much as you used to". My reply was something along the lines of :
"I'm sick of going to a game & watching my team being umpired differently to the opposition, I'm sick of them shafting us week in week out. I'm sick of being angry at our treatment at the end of a game. I’ve had enough of the AFL shafting us as much as they can. I'm not enjoying footy like I used to. Thats why".

I love footy, but I hate the AFL & their shoddy treatment of the everyday supporters, I have trouble even watching a full game on TV because of the terrible umpiring & commentary by most of the "commentators". The game itself has evolved into a game of "basketball" with an oval ball, due to the myriad of unnecessary rule changes, & interpretations. My God, it used to be the best game in the world. Its so far away from that now.
I love the Tigers, but I despise the AFL & what they've to OUR game.

I just wish that the media puppets would grow some kahunas & call the AFL out on their arrogant treatment of supporters & the game itself.
But they won't, because they'd be kicked off the gravy train that sustains them & their fat cat bosses.

Oh & I'm not sure if it's obvious, but I hate the AFL.

I would like to dump a truck load of bull :poop: at the door of AFL house, I only go now to support the boys and club

The club needs to realise that alot of supporters have stopped going coz of the bias umpiring. This is doing more harm to our bottom line than a few fines would.

Nah. Football over load.
We pick which games we go to.
We have seen 3 flags.

I went to the social club after the game and I have never heard as many die-hard supporters saying they are contemplating giving the game away. The common theme was “I can't do this anymore”. These people have been lifelong, committed supporters and are now contemplating walking away. My wife has already quit. She wont go anymore and will not renew her high-value membership next season.
The game is haemorrhaging. The grass roots are dying all due to the umpiring and other anti-fan, ridiculous AFL policies such as the contrived unequal draw, political posturing that has nothing to do with the game, and their socialist “equalisation” policies. The media companies are happy because they get their curated content and the AFL therefore gets their income, but it is coming at a huge cost. I can see the game dying from within. The fans made the game what it is today. They should be listened to before anything else.
I didn't go to the social club because I was so despondent that I just wanted to go home, we didn't talk on the train and I felt drained. I will keep going to support the boys but *smile* its getting hard

We will suffer huge financial losses this year because of the above, the imposition of the “tax” on the better financially performing “big” clubs and the ridiculous draw.

Its almost like its a conspiracy to make the Tigers financially weak.

I posted this in the game day thread:
The siren goes, the whistle sounds, Dow looks at the ump who has his hand raised for half time, Dow drops the ball. Ump pays 50.

In the 3rd, Freo player runs the ball out of bounds, deliberate is paid. Freo player tosses the ball to the boundary umpire. No 50 paid.

A couple of years ago i remember Broad (i think)running with the ball in the backline, slipping, getting tackled, the ball touching the ground, then Broad handballing- holding the ball was paid cos the ball touched the ground whilst he was tackled. The same thing happened yesterday to a freo player- no free.
It never ceases to astound me how these frees- like the Broad rushed point earlier this year- are plucked from nowhere very rarely, but that rarely always seems to be against us.

They absolutely refused to pay us HTB yesterday particularly when it was Brayshaw or Serong. No wonder those guys can rack up so many possessions in the middle and hold onto it as long as they do, as they knew a free was never going to be paid against them. The umps were just waiting for us to send a 2nd man into the tackle, slip a little high so they could pay Freo the free instead.

Below is an extract from Slobbo's "Tackle" article.

The wheel is turning slowly by I expect the AFL to stay shtum and ride it out.

Richmond supporters were livid. They had every right to be. The free kick count was 20-11, but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was the number of free kicks umpires didn’t pay when it appeared the Tigers had earnt them. Time and again, the Tigers would lay a tackle and not be rewarded for incorrect disposal. Salt was added to the wound when the Dockers, at times, received free kicks for incorrect disposal by the Tigers. Once again, confusion reigned about what exactly is prior opportunity. The more cynical Tigers supporter would say ‘what’s new’. Over the past five years, Richmond’s differential between free kicks for and free kicks against is -332. The next worst side is Hawthorn on -108. How can that properly be explained? Is there a vendetta? Or are the Tigers just sloppy or too aggressive with their tackling? If this was politics, a Royal Commission would be demanded. And if this was politics, we’d love Tigers officials to have parliamentary privilege so we could hear what they really think.

I can't wait for Whately to gaslight Robinson on AFL360 tonight on this subject.

This

I have been going to the footy since 1969
For us older fans remember when there was only one field umpire - they were the days
I simply NEVER remembering talking about umpiring as much as what is being talked about now in those days
Of course there were the odd bad decisions. there was some booing but I never ever remember going home and complaining ad nauseum about free kicks which is what is happening now
The game was far better umpired when there was only one guy, his interpretation and he stuck to it all game
I also dont remember players getting as wound as up as they do now
For each additional umpire over the years the game has changed for the worse
The constant whistling that goes on now does my head it - it completely stops free flow of the game and noone knows what t he hell the free is for or who is to take it
I know the AFL will not countenance any criticism of their game and keep saying it is in the best shape ever but it is not
It is becoming a huge turn off for fans
A great year 1969 - At that time we lived a few doors from Jack Hamilton when the league was run by him and a handful of office staff and I started work at the Gas & Fuel where Jeff Crouch not only ran the Technical Drawing office he also umpired the Grand Final on his own. Simpler times perhaps!

They simply have to fix the holding the ball rule. When the fans have no idea what is going on you have a problem and that’s where we are.
These days if you get tackled without prior you can literally get rid of the ball any way you like, most of the time.
When a player has prior opportunity they still give an eternity for the player to dispose of the ball, most of the time. What is the purpose of prior opportunity ? I thought once you have it and are tackled you have forfeited the right to dispose of it?
You must make an effort to dispose of the ball when tackled except these days you don’t have to, just take the tackle..most of the time.
Short slipped yesterday and the ball was near him, Freo player clearly pulled the ball underneath him, I thought that was outlawed ?
The number of times I saw players yesterday try to break tackles and get caught but not free kicked was countless.
I can’t work it out and it also makes for a lot of stoppages, something that hurt us badly yesterday.
Tackle after tackle, no reward, but a player touches someone on the mark it’s 50… sometimes.
I can’t watch full games of other teams because I get frustrated with the rules and interpretations. I’ve said it before, if Richmond wasn’t playing I would have only a passing interest in AFL now.

Remember the Sydney guy who booted the ball into the crowd after the siren?

Leigh Matthews raised this point today, that the umpires aren’t paying htb anymore.

Andrew Dillion is supposed to be a Richmond supporter.
FFS surely he's as frustrated as the rest of us.
We don't want favouritism, just to be umpired equally.
Fix it fast or fans will start turning their backs on the game.
I heard him in a recent interview backtrack and claim he is a partial tigers supporter….. says it all doesn’t it?
