Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

well, Margetts mustn't have been aware of the massive issue of all these players at lower levels abusing umpires to the extent that they were leaving umpiring in droves.
But it doesn't matter, because after just 12 Rounds Brad Scott's piece of *smile* rule cunning plan has worked exactly as it should, people are lining up to be umpires again, everything is hunky dory at the grass roots, crisis averted.
Players can now go about raising their arms, safe in the knowledge that the world won't spin off it's axis. Just don't raise an eyebrow at the same time coz that's a 50!
People like Margetts with previous relevant experience should be the ones looking after umpiring. Idiots like Scott getting the role is indicative of the many problems with the AFL.

So the umps and the AFL were red hot on a new rule interpretation at the start of a season and have since calmed down? No way, never seen this happen before…

Exactly. Like in external business, those with experience in specific areas take those jobs.

You wouldn't employ a marketing manager as a finance manager for example, or an IT manager so why accept it in the football industry.

Umpires have to be coached to tolerate players' emotions?
How about coaching them to recognise holding the *smile* ball? What the *smile* is going on down tnere?

bumping this because a few saying we got some favours last night
but all in all it was pretty balanced

their 50m penalty for a goal was barely there - and it was about 60m given
they also got another goal after us not being paid a dropping the ball free and them getting one 30seconds later

We got a few gimmes, but it wasn't outrageous bias. Gotta happen sometime. To say Port was robbed is a big stretch.

It's funny, I almost feel guilty when we get the rub of the green.

I thought they didn't have much impact last night which is the way it should be. Finlayson got away with a lot of pushes. But there were no howlers I can recall.

King has been having a real crack at Scott. Saying they effectively changed the interpretation of the dissent rule with no announcement. Saying the fans deserve better. He's been spot on lately Kingsight.

The ARC is a joke. Most of the time the ball is moving that fast and the footage that blurred, it’s just a total guessing game. And the commentators try to assess it as well and are also guessing.

As an extension of all that, why don’t we just get rid of the hitting the post and touched ball rules ? If it goes through the goals it’s a goal. The only thing you’re looking at is if it’s crossed the line. If it’s marked …it’s marked. Who cares about someone getting a minuscule fingernail on something kicked from 50m away.

Makes the game easier to umpire and reduces controversy and guessing.

Ive posted the same Redfords. As long as the first instance it’s off the boot.
It all works the same for all teams.

Common sense Redford, but the AFL never use that phrase.................................................................................................

Would increase the number of goals scored, therefore add breaks for Channel 7, therefore revenue $'s from advertising, so everyone wins right. Why do these numbskulls at AFL HQ try to bring in ridiculous rules to try and increase scoring and *smile* the audience off at the same time, whilst also bringing in the ARC (which pisses everyone off again) yet they could just do away with touched off the boot etc and just increase goal scoring that way.

I still like the touched on the line (you still have to be able to spoil the ball over the goal line from kicks towards goals without conceding a goal), but happy to do away with touched off the boot and hit the post.

That’s right Willos. Just make hitting the post or touching it irrelevant. In the case of the hitting the post rule, It either goes between whatever posts or hits it directly enough such that it doesn’t, and then you can call it a behind or play on or out on the full or whatever. But if it sneaks in, all you’re looking at is off the boot and carrying the line.

Touching the ball. Who cares. If the touch doesn’t have enough impact to prevent something (eg a mark or the ball crossing the line) then just ignore it. Let it be it’s own meaningful impact or not, in other words.

Great post, couldn't agree more. I'll add another little known thing, you know when you see the replay and it looks like a finger goes back as the ball goes past? That's very often a trick of the camera and doesn't show the ball is touched.

The problem with your theory is inevitably there will be a glaring mistake and the dribblers will start with their 'how can this happen in a professional game' and 'it might decide a Grand Final one day and all hell will break loose' blah, blah blah.

Because umpires aren't allowed to make mistakes. Shai Bolton can miss from the goal square and we have a good laugh but umpires make a mistake and all hell breaks lose.

Well the afl could do a lot worse than actually formulating rules that work. Or perhaps invite Redfords and myself ;)

Ditch the ones that are *smile* and try to simplify the game for umpires. Do away with holdups during the game.

Maybe do a proper independent survey of supporters for genuine “inclusive feedback :)LOL: yeah I know)
Or just ask people who know a bit about the game (not *smile* sheedy or *smile* blight, both should be a nursing home)
1. Ditch the touched off the boot/glanced off the goal post
2. Ditch the “stand” rule (*smile* *smile* sHocking)
4. Ditch the “ruck nominate” rule
5. Simplify the “prior opportunity“ rule
6. Ditch the umpires microphones/ link with each other
7. Ditch pepper Scott
8. Ditch the current MRO
9. Make the MRO independent of afl interference
10. Other suggestions will be considered on merit. :)
