Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Hmm never see this headline for Tiger games

DEMONS “GOT THE GREATEST RUN FROM THE UMPIRES” AS ROOS COACH SEEKS CLARITY

Stupid theory I’ve come up with.

More 50’s and more frees should mean there is more scoring in theory.

More scoring means more ad breaks. More ad breaks equals more revenue.

And we just happen to be negotiating a new TV rights deal this year.

A serious question TBR, and I dont have the stats on hand to back it up, but why despite the disparity in frees in H&A games in 2017-2020 did frees in finals even up or were actually in our favour?
Tigers were on their best behaviour. Played soft unaccountable footy to ensure fewer free kicks. So lucky to still win with the attitude but at least we won some free kick counts. I truly believe it was the free kick count win that induced Tiger euphoria on Swan Street after the game on grand final day in 2017.

I think that appears to be the logical reason for it all Scooper.

Unfortunately for the AFL scoring is down pretty much year-on-year (even this year so far after correcting for WC and NM) which has led the AFL to double down and ruin our game even more with stupid new rules and new rule interpretations.

Any word on a No. 27 for the Drugos elbow to Dion's jaw or throat.

Also No. 21 for the Drugos wayward whack to Soldo's nose forward pocket PRE.

FWIW I still think we get stiffed, but the bigger issue is the poor standard across the board rather than bias against us or any side. I think its been on the slide for years, and the new rules, mainly the stand rule, have tipped it over the edge.

Yet viewer numbers & attendances would be falling through the floor.

Where the hell was the AFL today? Hello Brad Scott??

You can't just list free kicks for, you have to take into account the number of games played, but TBR still liked it because it suits his narrative.

Now, let's look at where we rank in free kicks for per game shall we?

2017: 11th
2018: 18th
2019: 11th
2020: 12th
2021: 18th
2022: 18th after 10 rounds

Oh, should add, and this should be obvious, from 2017-2022, free kicks for, only 1 team averaging less than 18 free kicks for per game - Richmond.

Yes Richmond.

Making angels out of AFL teams for 6 years and counting.

There is a lot of talk about how we give too many frees away, ok, fine, maybe we do.

But, what explains the angelic behaviour of every other team when they play us? They just don't seem to break the rules when they play Richmond. The games we play don't have less frees overall, our games are around the middle on that score, but, unless the free kicks for Richmond cannot be explained by opposition teams being on their best behaviour every time they play us but not when they play other teams (yeah, real likely), then there must be another explanation.

I asked this question several times last week and nobody can answer it. And if anyone suggests that it’s because we don’t play for free kicks well enough, then that would be an indictment in and of itself because umpires are supposed to be on the look out for that.

It just seems, miraculously, that nearly every team has its best game of the year when playing against us and where giving free kicks away is concerned. Year on year…..

We can get riled up about umpiring & new rules but pending C.T.E lawsuits, that's the overhanging crux of the mess.

The Grimes tackle showed where the game is headed. Non contact like basketball, AFLX style.
Ask yourself if you want to be part of it or remember when footy was footy.

I keep saying this but if you don't want to get hit in the head then don't play. Sort of like having now to outline to a smoker that smoking may not be great for their health.

That is a stat that needs seeing actually.
Ave free for against opponent.
Gut feel is there would be alot of Richmond mentioned in one column.

The Short and Grimes dangerous tackle was a focus last night on 360 - Robbo (with all his knockers) was crazy adamant there where not sling tackles. This is a contact sport the needs skill and courage to play this combative sport ( he made lots of good points surprisingly). Grimes one should have been our free kick, Short one was just play on, throw in. Then (I didnt see the Hawks Lions game) OMG - I would be buying a new TV today. The two SOFTEST free kicks in history.

For me was is even worse is the LACK OF communication from the AFL. They have gone to ground and saying zip. They need a plan and not just justify their calls. If it was me I would be putting together " As it should be played" committee, that would need to focus on,

1. Simplification of the rules
2. Overcorrection of the umpire abuse rule. Remove as much (never all) ambiguity.
3. The holding the ball and sufficient time to dispose rule
4. No more center bounces - more umpires to officiate AFL, who know the application rules but cant bounce the ball
5. No more nominating ruck, 3rd man up - free kick to the opposition. Who cares if 1 or 2 rucks go up, Throw it up and go!
6. The stand rule, needs relaxing or elimination.
7, Kick outs, when full backs run 38.5m from full back with no bouncing thats looks stupid. There needs to be a 15-20M arc from goal, the player must bounce the ball or revert back to kick it in the square to play on from a point. Kick ins look stupid now.... under 10 league stuff
8. Long term - panel of professional umpires. Core umpires must be full time - officiate AFL and AWLW year round. 10km min running criteria scrapped.
9. Tuesday public update. Build relationships with the teams, coaches, media and public. We accept mistakes, we hate silence.

There fixed !

Good list TP.

Add 10. and get boundary umpires to toss the ball straight in. Stop waiting until everyone has scratched their backsides, adjusted their jock straps and then put their hands up. On a serious note, the delay must add to the number of players that get there to congest the throw ins. Open it up.

and the time given before they get told to play on, I noticed it several times om Saturday

I will watch the replay tonight & time the instances for TBRs sake
We always get called to play on. Even when they haven’t moved off the mark. Other teams get a longer time before they are called to play on.
