Yep, that was a bad decision. No idea how DeGoey had prior opportunity there. The player who actually goes for the ball, rather than going for the tackle, should have some leeway, which is why the prior opportunity rule exists. That was a silly decision, the commentators effectively said it was silly, but their solution for a player in DeGoey's situation was pathetic.

I think the umpire knew he had no prior DS, he penalised him for insufficient effort to get rid of the ball. How a player who has one arm pinned and is on the ground can demonstrate sufficient effort is beyond me. Degoey was clearly trying to extricate his arm so he could handball.

Holding the ball, prior opportunity, insufficient effort to dispose of the ball …it is a mess and a lottery

I would love to find some data on when free kick are given. I felt last night we got quite a few junk free kicks to lessen the count in the last 10 min of the 4th.

The only app I can find is a pregnancy app that counts the kicks and intervals

But just maybe it will work, then I'd have to justify the download to my wife!

I think the only thing you could do is note the frees at 3/4 time then again after the game. But there’s no doubt in my mind umps often even up the frees a bit, not just for us but in many games.

I'd love to get an app developer to work with to log frees for each match and time, then spit out visual reports - it would be very cool. Then for the complexity log the betting changes as the game progresses... see where I am going with this?

Is it just me, or are all the umpires geeky looking 27 year olds who have no idea about real footy.

i think we need some 40 year olds umpiring the game.

The only way I can think of doing this would be to look at the game feed on the Footy Live app which might work. Labourious though.

Actually, just watching that last Q clearly shows how dumb we are with the ball. If we just concentrate and use composure, as Melb did, we could easily have taken marks and kicked goals to win. Only 23 points down with 6 minutes left and we waste our chances.

Wow, that is interesting... I can see 3 sequential free kicks to Melb triggering a series of frustrated and undisciplined free kicks from the Tiges.

I'm looking to find an existing app to log events like this, my required some customising but I may spend some time once kids go to bed.

So we got 13 free kicks in the first 3 and a half quarters then bingo bango 6 in the last 8 minutes. Whodathunkit….. Melbourne were obviously undisciplined in the last 8 minutes…
