Umpire Abuse

Is there a way we can encourage more umpire abuse in the game? I feel they get off lightly too often.

Seriously though, players should leave this to the experts, us in the crowd.

The thing I don’t like about this is that it is subjective. It will be based on what an umpire deems to be a abuse.
Subjectivity in rules is a bad thing imo because it just adds to frustration as it will inevitably be inconsistent.
Blatant abuse has been a 50 metre penalty for ages, what needed to be changed?

I like it.
Berating an umpire is not a good look. Leave that to the crowd.
Is there any instance in the history of footy where an umpire has changed his or her mind due to a player meltdown?
Soccer is disgusting with the way they get in the referees face.
Leave that to the crowd you say Z.
How long before any umpire criticism from the crowd incurs a heavy fine and eviction from the ground?

Remove the subjectivity. Players can't talk to, or at, the Ump. The captain is the only player in the team who can approach the Ump asking for clarification.

On the same token, the Ump shouldn't be friendly with the players, using nicknames, having a chat etc.

It works in other sports. It just comes down to the AFL's desire to stamp out Ump abuse/arguments and Rayzor's willingness not to be the centre of attention.

I agree with that. If we are going to have this rule then make it black and white not up to an umpire’s interpretation of abuse. Only issue is that captains go on and off the ground in afl and we have two , so that would need to be worked out

If they are approaching an ump to query a freekick, it can be when they are back on the ground. Even at the end of the Qtr. It's not like approaching the Ump quickly is going to make any difference to the outcome.

When I played footy, the umpires would join you after the game for a beer. There would be some colourful and jocular conversations however one learnt to temper one’s deeper thoughts or bringing up intricacies of their performance lest they reminded you of your average performance or lack of football ability in front of all your teammates. And of course they handed out the votes!
Made the umpires feel part of the game.

You would also drink with the opposition where great mate-ships and rivalries were established.
They were some of the best memories of my playing days.
Sad that these traditions evaporated

The Captain is already permitted to approach the umpires at a break in the game to discuss issues. Can't see any purpose in having anything further than that anyway.
Even in rugby union which is perhaps the best model for dealing with referees/umpires the captain quite often asks referees about penalties and why they are awarded. You can also hear players saying a few words which can be followed up with the ref talking to the skipper about keeping the chatter down or a penalty will be paid.

Just allowing a captain to only speak to the umpire at breaks is too much in my view. Even cricketers quite often ask umpires why an appeal is turned down, you can hear it from the microphones on field.

But Rugby and Cricket have natural breaks in the play Sin. Apart from between a goal and the bounce there's no real opportunity in football unless we are going to stop the game for it.
I think we have some natural breaks like when a player gets a free that is a shot for goal or after goals being scored . I don’t see any difference between the umpire being asked by the captain “ why was I called for incorrect disposal ?” whilst the player goes back for the kick and a rugby player asking why a penalty was called or Mitchell’s stark asking why his LBW was turned down walking back to his mark between balls. As long as the player doesn’t say “ *smile* decision you *smile* green maggot “ of course. Between quarters is too limiting imo.

If it can be done respectfully both ways and everything else not be tolerated that would be a great outcome.

Includes coaching umpires behind the scenes if they treat players like kids and not adults. (Looking at razor here)

Seems like some things we can learn from other sports here.

Here is the latest.
CLUB staffers could serve suspensions from their matchday roles if they are found to have partaken in any abuse towards an umpire after the AFL Commission approved changed sanctions.

The League informed clubs on Wednesday that the AFL Commission had ticked off on an amendment to impose sanctions on individuals who transgress with their behaviour towards umpires as part of its crackdown on aggressive and abusive treatment of the officials.

Individuals will be able to be fined separately to sanctions imposed on their club for any incidents as well as potentially being prohibited from performing their matchday role for a period of matches if the AFL sees fit as an appropriate penalty.

Wonder how long before fans who abuse the umpire is chucked out of the ground and fined?

Nothing wrong with that. As long as the clubs have an official channel to get clarification from the Umps I don't see any issues.

the time a player is being made to stand still on the mark and not engage in the game is the perfect time for them to seek clarification on the decision so they can reflect on their action and consider ways to avoid repeating it.

The 50m penalty against Petracca is an absolute indictment on the game.

What an absolute joke!

The AFL are doing everything possible to disenfranchise the supporter base.

Hocking and now Gil. Media too pissweak to say anything.

The lack of comment by the Fox commentary team is embarrassing. The AFL gestapo have put the muzzle on them.

That was insane. They’re at it again the AFL and umpires.

Warning to all players: if you look at the heavens after a free kick and don’t say anything, nor gesture at the umpire, that’ll still be 50.

Game is eroding.
