U18 players to watch - 2013

There appears to be a feeling that Ben Lennon will go around 9 to 10in the draft.
A 188/189cm half forward, who can run on the ball and kick long multiple goals would be a fillip to us.

Darcy Hourigan of SA appeared to have impressive U18 champ stats too, but appears unsighted in the first round.
I thought it might be age, but he's born on the same day as the highly fancied Matt Scharenburg.
Any views on Hourigan?

The taller and heavier Mitch Harvey's stats look impressive too.

To me, a minimum average of 4 marks a game plus a multiple goal average is crucial.

Marcus Bontempelli appears to be a likely type as well, being a tall midfielder who can kick multiple goals.
The Northern Knights boys have a strong work ethic now so, if mentally like Vlastuin, would be worthwhile.

Patrick McCartin of Vic Country took a lot of marks and averaged two goals a game. Geelong Falcons are pretty good too.
He seems unrated as well.

Hmm!
The goal-kicking rovers don't appear as evident, but they usually miss out on rep selection anyway.
The TAC & state-based comp stats may provide a better clue here.

Lennon is my top pick in the range we find ourselves in, just a polished player who will play 200 games. The interesting thing with Lennon is whether he has the inside game to make it as a damaging midfielder, his last month of TAC performances put some of those doubts to rest.

Hourigan is a better version of O'Hanlon, he's a booming kick too. The issue with these Hourigan types is they can be one trick pony's - the lead, mark and goal forwards. He's not quite KP height either, granted he's a powerfully built unit but he's not noted as having a big tank, this means some serious mileage needs to be put into those tree trunk legs.

Bontempelli probably fits in the Lennon category, will he take his game to the next level and become an elite mid? I'm not completely sold but I reckon he'll find a niche as a Grant Birchall type who causes some serious damage as a rebounding back flanker. He's a few centimetres shy of KP height and is bottom aged so there may even be the prospect of him growing another inch.

As for that elusive rover you refer to, Billy Hartung is by far the best candidate, he ticks most of the boxes I see as critical for the role he plays. His disposal is first class, he's got exceptional evasive skills, his tank is huge and he's got some pretty handy afterburners to compliment his endurance. He can also kick goals from outside the 50 metre arc, something which should be highly valued at draft time.

The knocks on Hartung will firstly comedown to his apparent frustrations with close checking opponents. This I'm not so fussed about because despite his inability to cope with a hard tag, I think his endurance will eventually become a weapon against the serial pests. It's also worth noting that Billy did an exceptional shutdown job on James Aish, keeping him to just 4 touches in a half of footy. This bodes well for his ability to serve out a thorough apprenticeship as an onballer.

The biggest concern will come with his height, at 177cm he may find himself on the outer with some recruiters. Personally I don't think it should be a deal breaker, Collingwood has proven that height isn't the be all, end all, when it comes to making the grade. From a Richmond perspective, Hartung represents an immediate need and has most of the tools to become an AFL footballer. His draft range is probably 15-25, so if we're considering downgrading pick 11, then he could be the perfect candidate.

I'd be interested in peoples thoughts on Dwayne Wilson and especially Jarman Impey, both are something we lack and both should be there abouts between our 2nd and 3rd pick

How do you rate Hartung against Taylor BH?

I like Hartung because I see a player who could fill a wide variety of roles within the team, last week he played as a rebounding flanker in the mould of Andrew Walker, at the carnival he played as a tagger, at TAC level he's had quite a few 3 goal bags as a makeshift forward. These are all areas that we're deficient in.

In saying that, if we had of lost Conca, I would have probably been jumping on the Taylor train. As an inside mid who possess terrific speed off the mark, he represents an excellent pick. Again, he's on the short side at 174cm, but when one looks at guys like Prestia and the mosquito fleet at Collingwood, a lack of height shouldn't be seen as a major deterrent. The critical questions for mine are, firstly, is he winning enough contested ball? The answer is definitely in the affirmative. Are his first few steps powerful enough to get out of trouble? Again, a major tick. How's his kicking ability? Generally very good, he has reasonable distance and a high disposal efficiency. He can also hit the scoreboard which is another feather in his cap.

It really is a tough call, both I think will go on to be very good footballers. It's a pity that Taylor isn't going to the combine because I'd love to see his endurance numbers. This is probably the deciding factor for me, Hartung would give Brandon Ellis a run for his money and will probably walk away from the draft camp as the man with the biggest engine - you would struggle to find him stationary at any point in a match. On the other hand, his inside game isn't nearly as good as Taylor so it then becomes a question of finding Tuck's replacement or picking a player who has a slightly different skill set.

Cheers BH, good insight. I'm definitely a Hartung fan and I'm hoping if we work out a trade for Adams and swap our first with their second he'll still be on the board at 20... Fair chance I'd say

I've looked at Hartung's stats in the U18 champs.
Unfortunately they weren't that impressive, neither by disposals nor by goals.
His TAC looks much better, and I've heard that he had a great game in a losing team that got thrashed today in the GF.

Crouch in the first round, little Billy in the second.

I would like Lennon though, reckon he becomes a Rolls Royce.

I like Impey. He'd be perfect for us up forward. Wilson I keep changing my mind on. Not sold yet. Though if he's there 3rd round he could add value.

I keep thinking how good a younger Montagna (178cm) would be in our team. Joey went at 37 maybe height related? Adams and Hartung would be a nice balance.

Scott is an overage kid so he should be doing well. Petracca is a top pick next year.

Hypithetical BH, if you had the choice of Lennon or Adams who would you choose?
