TYLER Fishlock, who lost both eyes to cancer, is living life to the fullest.

The energetic three-year-old, who touched thousands of hearts with his battle against eye cancer, was back at the Royal Children's Hospital yesterday – as a visitor, not a patient.

Tyler met the Easter Bunny for a big hug and ate some chocolate eggs as he and his family joined the Good Friday Appeal celebrations.

Tyler was diagnosed with the rare eye cancer retinoblastoma in late 2004, and his left eye was immediately removed.

He waged a 15-month battle to keep his right eye – having chemotherapy and radiotherapy – but the cancer spread rapidly, and surgeons had no choice but to remove it in February.

It was a heartbreaking time for Tyler's parents, Georgette and Brad, and his sister, Madeleine, 8. But the Fishlock family credit the skilled and caring staff at the hospital with saving Tyler's life.

"We wouldn't have Tyler if it wasn't for the wonderful doctors and nurses here, " Georgette said.

"We're forever grateful and can't put into words how grateful we are that we still have our son."

Pathology tests show that Tyler is now clear of cancer, but he faces a high chance of being diagnosed with cancer when he is older.

One side-effect from Tyler's surgery is his irregular body clock. He often wakes about 3am or 4am, wanting to play with his Thomas the Tank Engine set or talk about Richmond Football Club.

Tyler's unusual waking hours are caused by a hormone imbalance, and to correct it doctors have prescribed a hormone replacement drug.

Love is blind, so is grandad
Kate Jones, medical reporter

COURAGEOUS toddler Tyler Fishlock, 3, and his grandfather Peter Kujus share a bond like no other.

Both know the trauma of cancer and both are blind.
Tyler's eyes were removed after a 15-month fight against retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, and now the brave little boy is learning how to live in a world of darkness.

But he is not alone.

Mr Kujus, 67, lost his sight after suffering a mild stroke, and though he has limited peripheral vision, he is legally blind.

Mr Kujus said he was devastated when he and his wife, Georgette, Tyler's grandmother, learned that their grandson would also be blind.

"It was probably the worst thing that's ever happened to us," Mr Kujus said.

"I knew what he was facing."

Tyler's left eye was so ravaged by cancer that surgeons at the Royal Children's Hospital were forced to remove it soon after the diagnosis.

Then, in February, after radiotherapy and chemotherapy failed, Tyler's right eye also succumbed to cancer and had to be removed.

Since the surgery, Mr Kujus has helped his lively little grandson to do the things most people take for granted.

Learning how to use a knife and fork, navigate unexpected corners and walk with the aid of a cane are just some of the invaluable lessons he has imparted.

"I don't think I've ever come across a child like Tyler -- there's something more to him," Mr Kujus said.

"I've got five grandchildren and I love them all dearly, but there's something extra with this one."

Georgette Fishlock, who is Tyler's mum and Mr Kujus's daughter, said the pair were inseparable.

"Tyler is the only grandchild that he hasn't seen before, but they're the ones with the strongest bond," Ms Fishlock said.

Their bond became even stronger when prostate cancer was diagnosed in Mr Kujus seven months ago.

He is now undergoing radiotherapy at Epworth Hospital in Richmond.

Mr Kujus said Tyler's resilience and courage had been inspirational.

"Tyler's been the champion: the problems that I've got are nothing compared to his," Mr Kujus said.

"He's put up with 15 months of torture that I don't think adults could even deal with."

Latest tests show that Tyler is clear of cancer, but he still has regular check-ups at the Royal Children's Hospital.

Tyler adores motorbikes and cars, is an avid Richmond supporter and loves to play with "sissy", his eight-year-old sister, Madeleine.

He may not be able to see, but the fun-loving little boy is as active as ever.

Inspirational, Incredible, Emotional. An amazing little boy who is a greater role-model than most other people in this world and he doesn't even know it.

Agree & you can throw young Sophie from Sydney into the same category.

There are two ambassadors for decency, innocence and absolute courage, love and selflessness, despite horrendous personal tragedy.

God bless and best wishes to them both, i feel humbled to watch their courage.

BRAVE Tyler Fishlock last night celebrated the birthday his mother thought he'd never have.

Three hundred of the battling cancer victim's family and friends gathered at a Deer Park play centre to mark his fourth birthday.

His mother, Georgette, said the day was special for the whole family.

"The doctors said he would never make his fourth birthday and that's why it's so special," she said.

"He's been looking forward to it for weeks."

Two-and-a-half years ago, retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, was diagnosed.

Tyler is now learning to live in a world of darkness after the cancer claimed his left eye last July and his right eye in February.

But the youngster's courage shone bright -- with him barely able to contain his excitement yesterday.

"Guess what? I'm so excited. Humphrey B. Bear and the Richmond Tigers mascot are here," Tyler said.

"It's just great."

His mother said yesterday Tyler was now free of cancer, but it may return.

"We still have to watch out for any secondary cancer that may develop," she said.
