TV shows

Hah, 30 years old?

I'm trying to re-watch Dr Who. Unfortunately many missing episodes from the Hartnell and Troughton years but I'm almost up to Pertwee so I'll get colour and no missing episodes soon.

I'm up to the end of Troughton so 55 years old.

Might take a couple of years to get through them all!

Sadly, there are many series with missing episodes for whatever reason (i.e. the Hercule Poirot series) and other Australian shows which were recorded on the old VCRs by TV channels and then broken, lost or recorded over.

Yes, many.

There are some excuses (I think) for shows where there was only ever a copy on video tape as video tape was very expensive back in the day and they would re-use it. But any show, such as Dr Who, which was sent elsewhere, had copies made on film (they literally filmed the video playing on a machine made for the purpose). There is no re-using film so no point in not keeping it. My question over this, in relation to Australian series, is whether the shows you mention would have had a film copy made for viewing in states or countries other than the one they were made in.

They certainly found out how silly this was when the video/DVD market took off and they missed the opportunity to sell old shows.

I was going to look into the old Hercule Poirot series and see what is around, never saw it myself but liked the Rowan Atkinson series. Sad to hear there are parts missing.

Line Of Duty is watchable. Despicable characters, it's a police show that's almost anti-police.

I watched this series on Foxtel's channel and also on GEM (Nine's channel) and both have missing seasons not just episodes.

Just read recently (can't remember what Aussie show....Countdown I think) where Ch 2 ABC dubbed over the old video tapes and also Ch 7 doing the same with some 70's Aussie shows. Long lost and gone forever.

Yeah, lots of stuff taped over back then.

Poirot? Aah, I got confused, I was thinking of Maigret, want to see if I can watch the old series from the 1960s, all bar the pilot still exist. According to wikipedia all the David Suchet Poirot are available and can be watched on the Internet Archive for free.
