Tunnelling

Rosebury and McInerney to umpire on Sunday. I think the 3rd guy is Findlay but could be wrong on him.

Norf to be scrutinised for being sooks - and tunnelling up their own behind posts.

At least we have a week to refine our defence. If Hardwick texted Cambo behind the scenes instead of planting Dermie, North won't be prepared for the increased scrutiny on their blocking tactics. What a plan!

I've watched every game we play and I'm confused about this. Apart from the Chappy free last week which was bloody plain to see, I've never seen any of this happening from our backline. And I would be the first to admit if it was something we had gotten away with and have been found out now.

I don't think pessimistic has any idea what 'tunnelling' actually is. I think if we look back far enough he will have linked Troy Chaplin to the Bali 9 (now 7) at some stage, such seems to be his dislike of him.

Funny North calling Richmond for tunneling. There is no other side bigger in the league for this very tactic then North Melbourne.
Thompson, Firrito and McMahon are tunneling specialist.

Worst backline in the league surely, ugly, argumentative and plain boring.

I remember watching in fury at Glen Archer do real tunnelling to a strapping young Richo who had moved into playing CHF for a whole game - must have been around 20 times - and hardly get pinged once. It must have been about 13-15 years ago. Richo would have thrashed his much shorter opponent with his athleticism but the umps ignored dangerous tunnelling as he bravely kept leading up and leaping at the ball. It has been done thousands of times since and rarely paid as a free. However, when a player's legs are taken out from under him in the air I totally agree with awarding it. Never saw anything near that degree in the norf match, but their blocking of Jack and Ty off-the-ball ignored along with Turner kneeing Vlaustin in the face while he was pinned on the ground. Weak dog act! But Turner got his karma.
As for Brereton, he also tried to draw intention to Dusty giving his tagger, Jacobs, a bit of his own back in his 'special' comments, I believe to see if MRP would follow it up. What a pathetic flog he has become! The self-promoting 'tough' guy, now an umpire's dobber. He must be really worried about us getting thru norf to play his squawks after WC bash them. I think Richmond FC and supporters need to vent in the media far more. We are too quiet and humble because of our recent history IMHO.

This is crap!

SEN promo on Dermie talking about this tactic and Petrie agreeing!

Rance plays within the rules and positions his body so well and Petrie got pantsed.

I can't remember who that free was paid against where I think I heard the "tunnelled the player free against". Was it Chaplin?

This will be an issue come Sunday. The media and the North sooks have brought to the umpires attention. Campbo has to come out and put this to bed. Him being quiet spells that there will be a focus on our backmen and critical frees will be paid for frees that are not there.

Disappointed on so many fronts here!

Let's hope the game isn't decided by an interpretation by the rule of week!

Yep they will be running the tapes as we speak. Ready to crucify us.

Bingo. They also love to use the third man in to block a forward's run at the ball.

I'm over these accusatory remarks by those who simply have no idea.

Dermie is a flog.

Scott was one of the dirtiest sniper players at the Lions.

Norths Backline are full of pullers, scraggers, real tunnellers and off the ball indiscretions. Who 80% of the time play the man and not the ball. Blocking runs, always 3rd man up.

No wonder Barry Hall put a sleeper hold on Scott Thompson.

Our forwards will play smarter this week. A lot of one on one contests - Ty/Jack/Dusty/Lids would see easy goal conversions.

As for the tunneling label for Rance - Rance will have the last laugh. Watch on Sunday when North push Petrie up to the wing and play him as a second ruck to Goldstein. Petrie is no match for Rance.

our backs certainly do not tunnel.

we do push in the back a bit tho, gently nudging the forward using our chests. many defenders across the league do and have done for years.
the afl has allowed it and cannot change such an interpretation now entering the finals.

as much as it would affect our defenders, i wouldnt object if they changed their interpretation and actually paid a free when defenders push the forwards in this way. next year.

Precisely.

I would also argue that what North do is far closer to tunneling than the tactics Rance and Chaplain use. While they main intention may not necessarily be to spoil the ball, they position themselves so that the forward has to overcompensate to get back into a position to mark it. Either using both players momentum, or just through strength, to push the forward under/sideways of the flight of the ball, before that play has attempted to mark it! So If Ben Brown then overcompensates by reaching too far back and lands awkwardly as a result, then that's his problem. He should have read the ball flight better and positioned himself accordingly. No hands in the back, not holding the man., just footy smarts.

Chaplain and Rance are excellent readers of the ball in the air. That combined with his leadership and communication skills, is what makes Chappy so useful to the side. If this means accepting his footy skills being a bit unorthodox at times, so be it. Very happy to have him.

Just watch the umps decide it is the rule of the week and ping anyone that looks like they are defending on Sunday only... :p

I reckon they may have done themselves a disservice. Cambo will surely have taken input from plenty and we're not the only ones who know North do it more than most.

If you're going to call out something like that to try and sway the umpires, you do it a day or two before the match so they don't have enough time to review, discuss and decide how to approach it.

Hopefully they are smarter than that.

Was Thompson the big tough guy who attempted to push Barry Hall over while he was doing up his shoelace? They are pretend hard men, the lot of them. All the genuine hardness went out of that side the day Glen Archer retired.
