We did these things when the key assistants were there, Fly, Leppa, Carracella.
Noticeable drop off after 2020. Dimma was a culture builder. Someone who can build a culture, a game plan and get buy-in. But not a in-game tactician.
That's what the rest of the crew did for him. He played to his strengths and built the right team around him.
Of course having good assistants is key. The coach can't do it all. and weve had some good one's over the years.
Used to think like yourself re: Dimma and that he took a back seat when it came to tactics.
Then listened to an interview with Leppa after he left, and was talking about Dimma.
Paraphrasing, but he mentioned Dimma is one of the great tactical minds he's worked with and that it was a real strength of his.
Said he was constantly amazed when the coaching staff would go back to the Punt Rd bunker after a match for a couple of beers and to disect the match.
He reckoned Dimma's ability to unpack the game tactically for his assistants routinely left them gobsmacked (or similar words to that effect).
Despite having some smart minds in the room, he led the way understanding then explaining the reason we won, or got beat and what needed to be implemented to improve, both for the next match and when we came up against that opponent again.
The 2020 doco also gave a good insight. Dimma led the way being pro-active with his team. You can see in the box he is in control and taking the lead with any tactical moves. Miles ahead of his counterpart Salty Scott.
Balta ruck, McIntosh back and George up the ground were all integral in-game moves that stemmed Geelongs lead and turning it back our way.
