Trent Cotchin (Merged)

I might be shot down here but I am expecting much more out of Cotchin this year.

I didnt feel he got anywhere near his 2017 finals form. 7th in the B&F reflects this.

We saw a glimpse against Hawthorn in the JLT.

Need a big year from the Captain if we are to lift the cup this year.

He lost one last week against Petracca but that is the first I have seen him lose for a long time. He looks is great nick at this time and I am tipping a very big (Brownlow) year for him
Paying $81 on Sportsbet. Standard $20 on him again this year.

Jack paying $15 for Coleman...

Started the season like a house on fire last year but I think he must have been carrying an injury for much of the back half of the season because his form did taper.
He looks in great shape at the start of this year. I agree that expectations are that he plays well.

I just want him to do what he did in the 3rd quarter against the Hawks in JLT 2 on Thursday night. Its vintage Cotchin. Something we rarely saw in 2018.

2012 Cotch
27.6 possession pg
4.2 Marks
.9 goals
4.9 tackles
5.3 i50s

2018
22.1 possessions pg
2.2 Marks
.2 goals
4.7 tackles
4.0 i50s

No doubt the load is being spread a lot more now in the team than it was 6 years ago but questions will be asked if Cotch is in decline if these numbers continue to drop.
He's a great leader but as a premium midfielder he also needs to win his share of the football & have a big impact on games.
Hopefully has a big year.

Remember there was a time when Cotch had a habit of picking up loose disposals - and often it seemed to be across half-back.
And he tended to get a lot of those ones where he'd give a handball - get it back - and then go again. Could they have contributed to the higher numbers of disposals back then.
Now he's back to winning hard balls in the thick of the contest. Lower numbers but much more important.

If you impose any browlow medallists stats from their brownlow year to another year,

I think youde find a 20% ish drop in most areas???

Cotchy has got better every year except 16 imo

Considering the effectiveness of Cotch’s mindset of not playing for outcomes, it’d be counterproductive for him or anyone to play for statistical outcomes.

Keep refining habits that help us win and whatever happens statistically, happens. Stats are feedback, not the goal.

agree. the only real stat that counts is win/loss ratio, and surely chimps graph has gone up and up with the recession we had to have blip in '16

And Dimma/Cotch never seemed more preoccupied with meeting the key statistical measures than in 2016.

Why 2016 out of interest? That year he had his most ever efficient disposals and disposal efficiency, most clearances, most metres gained, only 0.2 off highest contested possessions. Personally I think he dropped off a bit in 2018. Since 2011, lowest disposals, lowest marks, lowest goals, lowest clearances, lowest rebound 50s, lowest contested possessions, lowest efficient disposals, even lowest bounces and in last 4 years lowest centre clearances and metres gained. He declined statistically in 2017 too but there was a distinct change in his role in that year, he was far more defensively minded and he was huge in that area. I just don't believe he performed to the same level in 2018 and early form in JLT up until the snd half of the last game did have me a little concerned. He needs a good 2019, turns 29 soon and has limited time ahead of him.

Looked to me like his focus in 2016 was to hit the stats that correlate with winning, and he did. But I never saw so many impactless 30+ possession games from him as 2016. If the key stats are hit naturally, you’ll win, but if you hone in on them, you’ll hit them at the expense of quality outside the numbers being recorded and celebrated.. Feels like they’ve done a 180 on how they approach stats since then, and it’s for the better

Trent is better now than 2016

Picks the moment to impose himself these days.

Like the best captains.

Agree with this Baron.

Also be interested in TOG, because of his bash and crash style I thought they rested him a lot last year, in the low 70s of game time from memory, so less likely to be a stat star but impact his huge.

It was the year chimp just misplaced his chimpanzee imo.

He was outside, backway and sidewards. I was suprised at his metres gained, but suspect it was just getting it back to where it came from. I wonder if you get a rebound 50 from receiving a backwards kick into the 50 then sending it back out?

And yeah like baz said, he took a bit of a sabatical from imposing himself.

I have zero doubt if you said to cotchy 'what was the worsy year of your career form wise and emotionally?' And hed go "'16" without hesitation

I reckon chimp has 3 more premierships in him

His dad reckons he has three more years in him, so three more flags would be nice.

32 with no significant injury (i am laying on a wooden bench) would be premature wouldnt it?

Love machine as captain, cotchy in the pocket at least till 34.

Burgoyne is 56
