Travel/Overseas destinations

Possibly. I'm here with 6 other families with kids. Not a couple in sight

Currently in NYC, staying at the Empire Hotel, on the corner of 63rd and Broadway.

Excellent position, being a short throw from cover into the stumps from the Lincoln Centre and Avery Fisher Hall.
Nice rooftop swimming pool too, which is a welcome rarity for hotels during the NYC summer.

I'm here for a special occasion, 30 years since I was last in NYC, but reckoned that I've visited the USA too many times.
I was here in the USA a year ago at Gettysburg for the 150th Civil War anniversary.

I think I'm over America. This trip has no buzz.
I want to go down to the Russian & Turkish Baths, down at East Village, http://www.russianturkishbaths.com/
And, I want to visit Westpoint Miltary Academy, an hour north of Manhattan, http://www.usma.edu/SitePages/Home.aspx
And, there is the particular reason I came here for.

Anyone got any other unusual suggestions for NYC?
I'm here till the 8th.

Love NYC. My fav place in the world. Could wander those streets for days.

Found it to be one of the friendliest places too. Make sure you walk The High Line, it's always different. And on a nice day bike ride the Central Park Loop and also the Brooklyn Bridge Pier 2, was just being built last time I was over but looked like a seriously cool Southbank type design.

Man, I got to get back.

Wife & kids want to do NYC, I want to go to Cooperstown for MLB hall of fame.

Had a lovely afternoon with my son.

A pleasant walk through Greenwich & East Villages, then to the Russian & Turkish Baths for a Russian style massage, including being whipped with oak leaves.
We had a great time!

Got a cuz in NJ and just now another one at Long Island. Married a US born Greek chic. I should do the same thing. ;D

Time to travel down the Southern states.

Yes, one of the more beautiful drives is the Blue Ridge Express from Virginia down to Nashville.

It's a great way to link the eastern and western theatres of the Civil War.

You can start around Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Richmond then do Chckamauga, Chattanooga, Shiloh, Vicksburg, then Mobile at New Orleans.

I intend visiting Westpoint Military Academy Museum either tomorrow or Monday.

I'd like to see Fort Lauderdale, Florida Keys and then head to see a bit of that eerie West Texas. I don't have much interest with Noo Orlins and their jazz.

Have you been to any steakhouses in Manhattan yet? Watch out for that food it's Independence Day today. ;D

Heading to the West Coast of the US next week for four weeks. LA, San Francisco, then doing Yosemite, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley in a Winnebago. The (Danish) wife and I met in the US 25 years ago and now we're taking our kids across. Can't wait.

Yeah, it's a bit eerie, but has a bit of a Darwin-type look. Have you been to Amarillo?

tremendous. doing similar next year, going with 2 mates for 3 weeks, we each pick a weeks activities, looking like 1) raft down Grand Canyon and Vegas, 2) New Orleans and some southern times, I still have to decide, I'm having a lot of trouble. Options are desert, Arizona New mexico, or Oregon, Wash State, or Kentucky/ Tennessee, can't decide, pressure is on

Had forgotten about this thread earlier in the year. Went to Burma for 2 weeks, magic, loved it. Did a tour for the first time ever Intrepid tours, its virtually necessary because of the political and economic situation, but its changing fast. Tour was great, guide was great, tour party was great, Aus, Can, US and UK and German, had a Carlton supporter who I really didn't want to talk to at first after the EF but she was great. Whole trip was tremendous, but biggest highlights were Bagan, ancient Bhuddist Kindom on the Irrawaddy river, 2200 10th C temples scattered throughout a 20 sq km arid area, just incredible, like another world, google Bagan Burma. Other was the Inle lake, like a 3rd world venice, amazing, Hire a long boat and a boatman and chu around the villages around the lake, stopping to eat and drink and check stuff out, wow, blew my mind. Beetelnut wasn't much chop, nothing on coca-leaf in Sth America. Very hot, and I live in QLD, I'd recommend it. Cheap

also had a 2 day stoppover in Singapore on the way home, geex, you can keep it. Block after block of Wesfield Shoppingtowns. Not my scene at all, had some good meals though, and it was interesting to see it.

Went to PJ Clarke's the other night for an aged skirt steak. Yeh, big size, and kept me up through the night.

Yes, a lot of people out today for the holiday. I went for a quiet walk around Brooklyn, then a walk alongside Central Park West up to the two museums.

Good to hear Phanto. I wish I was there. Don't think I can digest those huge steaks anymore to be honest, although I miss some of those huge burgers they sold during a NY Mets game at the old Shea Stadium in Queens several years ago. Literally, gross but tasty. A one-off for me. ;D

Walking around Central Park West, did you get the urge to visit Lennon's infamous and gloomy apartment building on 72nd street? Everytime I went to Manhattan, I went to visit.....bit like a visit to a cemetery. Just to pay respects to the great man.

I have a query on Germany if anyone is able to offer up some advice... I have hired a car for 5 days and I'm driving from Amsterdam to Berlin and back in early august. i am staying 3 nights in Berlin, which has given me 2 days to get there in each direction with an overnight stopover along way the way.

going there I am tossing up between Hamburg and Hannover for the overnight stopover. I am leaning towards Hannover because it makes the drive shorter (Berlin via Hamburg is an extra 100km compared to Berlin via Hannover).

coming back, I need to stay somewhere reasonably close to the Dutch border because the car needs to be returned by 1pm (plus i hear the Rhine/Ruhr region is beautiful). I am tossing up between Dortmund and Dusseldorf. For the same reason, I am leaning towards Dortmund because it makes the drive shorter (100km or so).

what are peoples thoughts? perhaps someone is able to offer up a better suggestions?
