Training For 2023

Quick thoughts - Hopper, Hugo and Bakes stood out in match sim. Rehabers were moving well and doing the yards. Some ripper tackles! Dusty was a magnet and still the bull.

Positional thoughts – Biggie noticeably had a key defensive role, Millar forward and ruck, Dusty half forward / central, Cotch centre onball for match sim.

My young kids needed to sit on the fence and I needed to hold onto them, so I didn’t give them much attention. I was lucky to meet Caesar, though he too climbed up to sit on the fence!

A surprising long session with Dimma keeping the players on the move for 2 and 1/2 hours. Overcast and windy.

Training consisted of running/movement exercises, contested marking, ball movement drills, full ground drills, shuttle runs, match sim for 3 / 4, then some laidback goalkicking and marking exercises. Apart from the last activity it was all done at a reasonably high intensity, not full bore game day level but with serious intent.

Drills – I only focused on particular drills while others occurred in different parts of the ground.
Contested marking – Nyuon, Young, Tarrant, Bauer, Bradtke, - so forwards and backs
Tarrant dominant with the strength and body smarts, Young and Biggie impressive and move very well, agile, leap well and quick on the ground. Bauer struggles as he is smaller and was easily beaten, though over the drill he improved. Bradtke is competitive and a good size, he wasn’t beaten often and worked hard to get front position.

Full ground drills started at full back with the ball taken around the flanks and kept in motion. There was speed on the ball, though it wasn’t immediate play-on. Dusty was prominent. Seth Campbell noticeable with long runs from hbf to have shots on goal. He moves well.

Shuttle runs 3 times. I watched the main group, there seemed to be a veterans group on the other side of the ground. Cumberland smashed the first shuttle (top agility/first steps), then fought out the 2nd run with DRio, then it was Broady and DRio took the 3rd. Narkle was on the end nearest us and wasn’t great, Brown was mid group, Bradtke was at the back end with the other big fellas.

Rehab / Injury

Lynch, Short and Graham all in rehab and running. All looked very comfortable running, Lynch doing 100s, the other 2 doing long laps. I’d suggest all are building well.

Soldo non appearance.

Flossy and Marlion not involved in Match sim but ran laps, then returned to the main group.

Prestia appeared to skip match sim, was standing by the bench towards the end. Probably a load management.

MoJu no concern that I saw

Match Sim – how lucky to see 3 quarters of sim!

The first q was a probables (in grey) versus reserves (in black). Only Jack and Tarrant of a best 22 were in black. The later qs the teams mixed up more.

Starting onball were Nank, Cotch, Taranto, Hopper vs Ryan, Dow, Castagna, Sonsie

Hopper was a standout.

Hugo and Bakes were dynamic around the back flanks.

Most play was fast and open, but look out Quentin who was hesitant and waiting and got slammed by Cumbo! Later MoJu also laid a ripper tackle, and newboy Kaleb Smith brought down Dusty. Smith also got noticed with a dash or two from defence.

Votes Hopper, Dusty, Baker, Ralphsmith

Agree! i haven't heard to much about Clarke to date but geez i like the look of that kid. big fan. Speed to burn...
He's the one type of player we're missing even through the flag years.
A speedy small fwd with footskills to burn.A taller Papley type.
Can see him causing havoc(Not Chaos) in the future.
Also very keen on Banks.

Clarke was there, not prominent or standing out amongst 50 players.
He does look super fit, slightly bigger but still slight and needs to get bigger.
And has a sweet kick.

We saw one ripper and I remarked how we have some beautiful kicks in the side.
Sonsie pinpointed a 40meter on his left went.
Both beauties.

Clarke im a fan but i expect we see something similar to 22, a few games and building up

From day one Clarke's reminded me of one Flybags Macrae.

With MRJ and Clarke up forward it probably means Castagna will find it hard to get a gig there.

A taller Papley, you really must rate the extra 2cm ;)

Very pleased to read Miller is training forward.
looking comfortable too.
obviously training is different to in-season, but i've thought that in past years he has been held back by confidence / between the ears
He know has a defined role and some solid senior experience. If he believes he can achieve

Absolutely, td. Not many 198cm footballers have Ben's pace and skill. It's there if he wants it.

To allay an earlier concern, he'd be training forward because the plan is to continue playing him second ruck.

Agreed, thats the main reason.

as a secondary benefit it helps for structure at training too.
In the drills/sim he is taking Lynch's deep tall slot.

No suggestion that the club see him as a replacement for big Tom, no.
But it helps for structure on training day

Trained him as a defender for 5 years now switching him forward? That’s not a good sign.

He played forward toward the end of last year and did it reasonably well. If he comes on there (and as a pinch hitter ruck) it solves a massive positional headache for us going forward. I like it
