Training For 2023

This is one I've actually suffered from as well and it's a bastard of a thing.

As Craigo said, it's the ligament that runs the length of your foot so it takes the full load of impact in almost anything you do and is involved in lots of other foot movements. Even things like cycling and swimming can be painful.

It's a big, thick, low blood flow, slow healing type of ligament and issues are very common in people with high arches who tend to run more on their toes, West Coast's Josh Kennedy of the Fred Flintstone goal kicking run up was a classic example of that and suffered badly from it, and flat footers which I reckon would be Lynch from the way he moves. The ligament itself also tends to tighten when resting or cold so playing footy in Winter in boots is challenging.

As people above have said there's all sorts of treatments from massage, to orthotics, to cortisone, to surgery. There's a bit of promising stuff being done with electric shocks now as well. Once the ligament is released it instantly relieves but the best form of release is natural, ie it tears a little and releases the tightness.

That's why Rob Harvey jumped off the chair until it released, which still makes me shudder.

In a guy like Lynch I don't like it at all, largely because I worry about what he will do to the rest of his body by changing his mechanics if he is moving with discomfort, but also because it can be a lingering, slow progressing type of ailment.

Fingers crossed for a minor case that can be quickly shut down with orthotics and night splints but it does have a tendency to stick around once you see it.
Our most important player too, no wonder they were keeping it under wraps☹

I had it for around 5 weeks. Painful

Used the orthodontics and consistently rolled my foot on a wooden rolling pin. Thought it would never go away. Then the pain just stopped and hasn't returned. That was over 5 years ago

Final Session

It was all about the run!

Started off with about 45 minutes of light skills work and then they were sent off to Christmas with a gruelling run.

Must have been a timed run not lap completion, when clock stopped The Beast, (Tarranto), had just completed 9.5 laps of PRO and had just lapped Tom Brown, (who came a fair way last), for a 2nd time and Dusty and DRioli for the 1st time, (he lapped 2/3 of the the field). A few of the boys finished right in front of me, Daniel who was sucking in the big one's and had given his all goes to Tarranto, who probably could've kept going, "*smile* Tazz you didn't go hard enough" :sarcasm:),
So Brown and Narkle seemed to be struggling after only two laps but to Narkle's credit he kept plugging away and overtook several players in the process.
Kamdyn and Bakes did their best to finish within about 100 metres of Tarranto.

Tom Lynch appeared at end of session in a moon boot and on crutches:(. Tom had progressively been doing less and less in rehab so they must have taken a while to diagnose ? otherwise you'd think they'd have pulled the plug on him earlier.

Cheers all and enjoy your Christmas break!

**** PF. It’s a *** of a thing. I’ve had it for 25 years. Orthotics, massage devices, ice etc. Terrible. Ache like hell when I’ve been on my feet for a few hours.

Bit of a concern about Brown. Has he put on size?

Early in pre-season but let's hope this doesn't affect his 2023 season.

I had it for 6mths and so cut back on the running and started wearing Birkenstocks for everything other than the gym.

I wore them around the house and even wore them at work which drew a few strange looks but when you're the boss you can do what you like.

It was gone within a couple of months and never had a reoccurrence.

Does anyone know if Brown’s running ability was so poor matched against his team mates last year?
Worrying signs for a pick 17.
Especially when Dimma confided last year at Club 80 that athletic attributes were our recruiting priority.

I see your :( and raise you:(:(:(:(:(. That is incredibly worrying.

Thanks for all the reports throughout the year as always, @caesar they are much appreciated. Enjoy the break and look forward to reading them in 2023!
Could they have snuck him in for a quick operation TBR?
Moon boots are used for resting the foot so not too concerned but crutches on top says to me he’s very ginger and avoiding weight bearing

Certainly a possibility, but I think it is more likely they are trying to give it absolute rest over the break and see where it sits.

Depends on how long it has gone on and how severe the issue is but it would seem unusual to go straight to surgery given it seems relatively recent.

If he has struggled with it for a long time it may have gotten to that point but still bad news as it will be a good 6 weeks before he resumes much training in that case and he won't be in AFL condition by season start.

Yeah it’s a concern. It’s not that easy to get over even with rest, ice, physio, stretching etc. As you say, high arches are a key contributor. Absolute beeatch of a thing. Like having a golf ball in your shoe at the base of the heel.

@caesar - thankyou , again , always look forward to your reports

Lynch - at least its not 6 weeks out from finals , gives our developing talls something to aim at

Taranto - sounds like he is invested

lets hope they all return in good shape after the break , its a long season so we don't want them peaking too soon

Yes endurance wise he was poor last year so i were hoping for an uptick, his draft profile said speed and athleticism and said he can play off a wing but he won't be seeing wing time at Richmond at this rate.
His profile did not say he had an endurance issue like they did RCD but it doesn't look that great, he might be limited to playing back where he can use vertical leap and footy smarts and short distance speed, (if he has got it).
To answer @spook question, Brown does appear to have put on some size.

@Little Ziggyadee will pleased that Clangerfield is saying that Max Holmes, (the player that Geelong picked with our 1st round pick exchange), is an aerobic beast with Judd-like traits with the ability to become the best player in the comp.
