Training For 2023

So no spot for Mansell in back half (we have plenty of HBF’s. No spot on wing - clarke, banks, Hugo, ross, sonsie etc all more likely. No spot in midfield with hopper and Taranto additions.

So club tries/trains him in forward line and people sook it up and complain. What else are to club to do with him? Why not help him develop his game and become a better all round player ?

IMO we’re better off using MRJ Cumbo Bolton as small forwards At least they all can kick goals
That’s all well and good but not everyone will be in the side to kick goals. Not many small/midsized forwards average more than a goal a game, unless they’re elite offensively like Bolton, Charlie Cameron, Papley etc. Majority of small forwards are in sides to apply pressure and aren’t prolific goal kickers

We could be reading too much into who did or didn't wear their training top inside-out, Scooper. But if Mansell plays it's because Dimma is as concerned about our lack of defensive pressure as many here. (What did Mini say? Melbourne kicked a world record 28 goals rebounding from our F50? A lot, anyway. Too many.) But if Dimma is that concerned he probably won't play three tall forwards. (Side note though: your point could have been used to argue Sammy Lloyd should have been in ahead of George in 2017 - I reckon plenty did. George had two career goals in five games coming into that year before playing every game and kicking 26 goals. Mansell has one goal from 15 games but has played in defence.)

Mansell was pretty good with what he did v Norfs. But it was only Norfs.

Cumbo might be competing with Cotch. Or he might be injured given he didn't train. Or Cotch might play midfield off the bench given we'll likely be without Ross, Short, Sonz, maybe Graham and possibly Pickett.

Interesting times.
I look at it a bit different that an extra tall means melb tall defenders don’t get it all their own way , not sure how mansell helps level up there

Dropped into VFL practice game and can confirm no AFL listed players participating so off to Happy Hour at the London I go :)
Well I'm pleased to announce that my happy 4 hours at the London has come to an end, more enjoyable than watching the VFL boys I have to sayo_O

Three forwards and mid-forwards have departed.
Cads, Lambs and JC.
It will be interesting to see how they reconfigure.
Always been impressed by Clarke in a HFF role.
Zac Williams is a massive out for the Blues, providing run off a HBF, also Walsh through the centre.
With those key absences, I presume they would play Saad higher.

Ruckman talls
I'm taller then Grimez & Astbury
Astbury was 195! That's an inch away from Nank. Riewoldt and Rance similar

Soldo may not be an A grader, but he's one of the best development stories in the league, from nothing to premiership ruckman.

Ryan certainly seems to be developing well. Let's see how that plays out.

Great dedication but poor of the club not to communicate that no AFL listed players were playing or explain why.
The 6 day break between games would have been the issue.

Stupid timing if you ask me. Not sure why they couldn’t have scheduled this game for Thursday night.

I don’t get it.
Plenty of AFL games in regular season only have a 6 day break.
Would have thought that this was a great opportunity to try players out you had question marks over heading into the first AFL game even if they only played a half.
Regardless the club didn’t make it clear to supporters why no AFL players took part. Why not?

This is just the thing, in Konrads books the 3 smalls from '17's roles are clearly defined & it's pressure 1st & foremost & goals are a bonus. It's the goals their pressure creates for others that keeps those types in the side above all else.

IMO the Club would have chosen not to play them off a 6 day break just for the sake of a praccy match. It makes a lot of sense to do it that way. main session on tues will tell us all we need to know about who could play thurs, those who don't do the whole session would already be ruled out of thurs night.

Maybe they feel that they would get more out of a heavier session during week at training. Or maybe they are nursing some players to the line. Nonetheless I think we will end up with a couple of players getting named that might be slightly underdone. Next Tuesday shall be very interesting.

Richmond’s Jack Graham (toe) and Marlion Pickett (adductor) were two candidates who could have played for the VFL Tigers on Friday, but instead took part in the Tigers’ main session on Thursday.
