Would you trade Cousins for a 2nd round draft pick?

No, I would keep him. He offers a good example on game day of gut busting running, blocking, positioning, tackling etc.

I reckon he could play forward too.

No and for the same reason as I stated earlier - he is the only senior player who shows any on field leadership and it will be more important in 2010 wth such a young team. And to think 8 months ago I was totally against getting this guy!

Unless you are pushing for a premiership, think it would make long-term sense to trade an over 30 year old for a 2nd rounder which in Richmond's case would be around the 22-23 mark. How often in history has this happened though? Probably never because teams just dont give up their 2nd rounder for someone at the end of their career and more susceptible to injury.

the thing that may not be discussed enough is Benny's fitness/body type. He's a Robert Harvey type and could easily go to 35.

3 years? Maybe we'd get that many if we're very lucky.
A player like Jayden Post might offer you 15.
Depends where you see us at I guess.
Personally I think we need all the talented juniors we can get.

Is he? Benny's had alot more injury worries than I remember Harvey having. Harvey (and Richo) are freaks of nature. Gets harder and harder as the game gets quicker every year. If Cousins could play to 35 then maybe a different story, but I doubt he'll be playing past another year or so.

I really wonder with some posters... ???

They want us to lose games and then when we have a player that is actually showing us some class on the paddock, we look to offload them while they have "value".

Last time I looked....successful teams want to win games and keep their good players.
How about we try that for a change? :help

ridiculously hypothetical..answer is NO, he's just beginning to add some VALUE
ridiculously hypothetical..... and any answer is irrelevant.
But Cousins is a gun - and I look forward to many more games from him.

So if Cousins was 35 would you trade him for a 2nd round pick? How about if he was 40? It all comes down to how long you think he can last. I doubt he';; be around another two years and on that basis I would trade him for a 2nd rounder. But as I said, it wont happen, I doubt it has ever happened, an over 30yo for a 2nd rounder.

Tough question ToO, I'd have to pass. Can't believe I am saying that, but what Cousins is setting an example for in leadership and 1%ers (ie blocking etc) is like having another captain or specialist midfield coach.

Whether you forgive Cousins his sins or not, the fact is he has always been a superstar player with a legendary work ethic, we have been very lacking in leadership by example for some time now.

Most of us who had reservations about him, whether it be his character, sins, age, health or list management reasons all conceded he should be given this year to prove himself. He hasn't finished the season yet but he is well on the way to doing that.

That being the case we cannot afford to turn our back on genuine class, footy brains, passion/work ethic and leadership for speculative talent. They are things we have been lacking too long to easily cast away.

Now, offer me a 1st round pick and I might give you a different answer. :cutelaugh

Yeah - fair enough - if he was 40 I probably would trade him!

Remember when North traded Wayne Schwass for Shannon Grant a few years back?
Not the same trade exactly but the principle is there.

Ben cost us a PSD selection, he's brought knowledge to a struggling club for sure but he's very unlikely to be part of a RFC premiership IMO.
I don't think it's that ridiculous at all and if a challenger was prepared to do it I'd go for it particularly at a time when draft picks are at a premium.

Amazes me that some folks think our other senior players will attract anything at the trade table yet Cousins who has genuine value is off limits.

If another club offered up a 2nd round draft pick for Ben Cousins at years end would you take it?

Not when we're re-building and not when Cuz provides true leadership which hasn't been at the club since Weightman was skipper.

Let's gain as much experience and knowledge from him and worry about draft picks in another way.

Our other senior players show no leadership or skills as Cuz does.
