Trade Week - Richmond Only

Brisbane can barely cover the Ashcroft bid if it comes at pick 1. They are hoping Ashcroft gets to 3 or 4, which will leave enough points for Marshall, as long as it is around 15-20.

GC won’t have enough points if someone bids on Lombard before about 6/7.

Both teams will go into points deficit in 2025 if these bids come early.

Essendon, on the other hand, have more points than Brisbane, so they can match a bid on Kako, even if it comes three days before the draft begins and they have to match a negative number. Obviously they want to use some of the latter picks.

This last one presents an interesting opportunity for Richmond, if they want to use it. Get to pick 11, ring Essendon and say, we will bid on Kako right now, which will cause you a few issues. Or, we can sell you this pick so you can use it on someone else. The price is your two future 1 picks and pick 28, which you are about to lose, probably along with 31 as well.

So you can get your extra first round pick now and match a bid on Kako later. Or you can choose to let us bid and either match or let us have him. Your choice.

That could be two future firsts for a slip back to 28 from 11. Might even work at 18.
A quiet question then TOTs?
Over a Tom Collins perhaps. "Say Essendon listen up sport. Here's the thing, I need you to take pick 11 from me. Only cost you your first rounders next year. Yes both of them. Get yourself a Shanahan who I know you'll like. There's a good chap."

Someone will bid before 18. Maybe even Dees or Saints before our 10. That would spoil the game.

But the bobers could have a forwardline of Caddy Shanahan and Kako.
And we could have 2 firsts, if it stayed the same its 5 and 9 plus a Sims/Mraz/OFarrell

Jason Taylor menaced Matt Rosa with bidding on Kako, TOTTIE. Rosa folded and traded the pick to Taylor. Taylor will probably bid on Kako. Almost certainly? He threatened him. He got the pick. Or has he done a deal? (The AFL is telling us that is punishable by death.) I think he has to bid.

Had we done a deal with Brisbane involving a non bid on Ashcroft it would have show in the points. It didn't. So we didn't. We're free to bid.

If we get a crack at Kako we can't extort without it being pretty obvious. And Blair's said we won't do it. And we clearly didn't do it with Brisbane.

On Levi Ablett jr word is he won't get past Thursfield. He shouldn't get past us IMO.

Yeah, what TOT says is a fantastic idea but it is draft tampering. I have no idea how much risk there is in it but there is no doubt what it is.

However equally I can see a very similar scenario playing out. If no bids have come for Lombard or Kako by the time the draft gets to pick 10/11 I have no doubt we will have those clubs coming hard for them with some very juicy deals and taking a call with an offer is not draft tampering. I suspect clubs will come to us all night for our picks but the deals will get less juicy as the night progresses, but probably delicious all the same.

It will be a judgement call.

Everything is draft tampering unless the AFL turns a blind eye.

Didn’t Sydney once trade out a first round pick just before a bid came so they could use chump change to match and then traded it back in? That was draft tampering, I would have thought. Are Essendon and Melbourne planning something similar?

Anyway my scenario won’t happen because it crosses a line which is way over the grey zone.

Yep it is but the AFL has been vocal that they are watching and they have an AFL integrity team (oxymoron) watching every deal.
We just have to play it smart. Taking a phone call and telling a club what is needed is to make a deal is not draft tampering.

Still say we owe Brissi nothing and if Ashcroft is best in the draft we shud bid on him at 1.

If we do that they’ll simply outbid us and that way Ashcroft goes at 1 and gets the extra things that goes with it, which takes that away from whoever we then select. It’s another reason I’d like to do away with f/s. It’s a romantic, but antiquated concept. We want the AFL to be considered fully professional and f/s isn’t that.

The Swans traded pick 24(?) out, maybe with Essendon, then traded straight back for it, at a cost of a 2nd rounder.
The AFL changed the rules so you cant trade a pick back to the team that traded it to you.

But yes, trading a pick to the Dons before a Kako bid, if possible should be considered.

I don't mind f/s but maybe there needs to be some tweaks to the system. Maybe we have to protect the 1st 5 or 1st 10 picks from bids. Whilst we are at it, lets protect the top 10 from compensation picks, so the earliest a compo pick can be provided is at Pick 11.

We live in a socialist system, whereby the bottom clubs should get the best players but if they don't protect the top 10, this is the scenario that occurs. Brissy have basically set up their midfield for the next 10 years and they get to complete the trifecta next year with Daniel Annable. They've essentially been able to build the top tier of their next midfield whilst at the top by getting players in the top 5 of the draft.

Twomey seems pretty sure we aren't going to be trading up for pick 2. We will probably just keep our picks and possibly trade out one or two picks if clubs come to us on draft night and pay overs.

I am certainly against basing compensation for free agency on ladder position Mr P. I would have thought a particular band should be a pick number. Maybe for a band 1 it would be pick 11 (those who miss finals have their picks protected) and only use ladder position if there is more than one band 1?

Then we stop the Pick 2 for McKay, pick 8 for Battle, Pick 3 for Frawley and Pick 18 for Buddy type scenarios
