Trade period 2021

I wonder if we are looking at something here - Essendon could possibly trade next years 1st round pick for 2 x second round this year.

26 + 28 would be probably close to getting it done.

26 + 38 + 42 = maybe not?

We have picks 38, 42 & 47 - maybe another deal with a team for their 2nd round and then on trade that with one of our second round picks.

Could really unlock things if we are trying to grab pick 2, 3 or 4.

Essendon’s draft strategy: Cluster pluck

By Jake Niall

Essendon, yet to make a trade during this trade period, are keen to acquire an additional first-round draft choice for 2021, in a strategy that Melbourne successfully deployed in recent years.

AFL industry sources confirmed that the Bombers, who enter the draft with pick 11, but no further choices inside 50, are willing to trade their 2022 first-round pick for a first-rounder in the 2021 national draft, to be held in late November. If no club is willing to do a first-round swap, there is also the possibility of trading in second-round choices.

The logic behind trading the 2022 pick for one this year would be to create a cluster of players who come through together, a pattern that Melbourne followed when the Demons traded future first-round choices into the upcoming draft in 2015, 2019 and 2020.

Good luck trading anything with Essendon.
Could be tricky with Essendon but for them, they basically have just pick 11 and then late picks. If they want picks then they would have to be flexible on this occasion.

Dudoro is working on his flexibility right now.

He wants to trade next years 1st for 12 2nd rounders this year.

The flexibility, is that he has decreased that demand from 15.

Anyone just hear the latest that Sam Mitchell is so desperate to get rid of his senior players for high picks that he, himself, has called rival clubs and player agents to see if he can get deals done for his senior players.

it was Sam Edmund so grain of salt stuff.

but if true what’s it say about his own belief in his people in the role doing their job. And if true highlights their desperation.

Yes, I heard, amazing if true.

It's not his job to be doing that, way above his brief.

I reckon by Tuesday night, Wednesday morning next week, these older players from the hawks will be as cheap as chips

Sam Mitchell wants the same opportunity that Clarko had when he started.

If you remember , Clarko had Pick 2, 5, 7 of the 2004 draft, drafted Roughie, Buddy, and Lewis set them up for 10 years, especially since they had Hodge allready.

Looking at the hawks list in 2021 they have Day and Grainger Barrass and that is basically it. Sicily ( 27 in jan )and maybe Bramble the only ones that will be around in 5 years

Their list is a shambles, they need picks and they need them now !

In this draft they have Pick 5 and 21

Everything will be sold, and sold now, the hawks will have zero pressure from the media in 2022, and 2023, so the tank will be in , especially since Tassie will get all the picks after that.

Next week is going to be very interesting. They know they have to muster or stay irrelevant for the next 5 years at least

Do they also have another early 2nd rounder?

gee if they don’t manage to get rid of those players, might be some shitty players given it’s been so public.

reckon Geelong will pick up wingard.
port maybe Mitchell?

I hope , I’m sure many won’t agree, that we stay away and keep our picks including the 2 x 2nd rounders

It's the Melbourne Model of trying to get a pile of early picks together so you end up with a quality group of players of around the same age.

It worked, so why not?

Exactly the reason we hit the draft hard over the next 2 years

We have enough picks to target 1 player (apart from Tarrent) and still have many picks inside the op 50, possibly swap for 2022 picks might be the go to balance out the spread. Good position to be in, just some astute decision making from here, no doubt an element of luck is always associated with draft picks .

The Brisbane, Hawthorn and Geelong Dynasties ended due to them neglecting the draft and going for top ups. I understand trying to smash and grab a flag while your core senior players are nearing the end, but you're creating a big cliff which you will eventually fall from. Geelong has delayed the inevitable more than the other 2 but their cliff will be bigger. I will be rapt if we pick 6 talented kids this draft even if it means Dusty won't win his 4th brownlow medal, as it gives us a much better chance to win premierships 14 and 15 in about 4-5 years time.
