Well done to thompson looked more comfortable out there last night than the week before, 15 posessions and used the ball quite well, in that 2nd qtr when we kicked 3 in a row thought thommo was instrumental in a lot of those plays, his kicking and handballing was pretty good....

One of the very few positives out of the game. Only had just over 60% game time too so a very serviceable game. 5 tackles too.

Re: Tigers vs Wc-Game day thread [Merged]

One of the most disappointing aspects of last night's game was the form of Luke McGuane, appalling disposal particularly by hand. Based on this game, I would seriously be looking to move him on, shame because I thought he was starting to really develop into a reliable defender.

At the moment, our defense is void of playmakers and given Thursty has been signed up either Moore or McGuane need to be traded. If a second rounder was on offer for either, I would have little hesitation.

Don't get me started on Luke McGuane. A total spud. It's ok to be determined but how about beating your man, staying on your feet, passing the ball to a team mate, showing some poise when in possession of the ball?

that's rubbish - if you look at the players that will remain on the list they in the main are a young group of highly talented players

Deledio, Cotchin, Tambling, Foley, Vickery, Riewoldt, Morton, McGuane, Collins and draft pick 3 are a pretty good group to build a team around.
We were well short of that when wallace started

I most certainly wouldnt include McGuane on that list.

Our backline is terrible. McGuane has been our best defender this year, now what does that say. I agree about McGuane. Under pressure he is terrible. Often under no pressure he is even worse. His strengths are his ability to position himself to get the ball I'll give him that. He has terrible disposal skills and just aint an AFL player. Then we have Moore who after a great 2008, dropped off terribly in 2009. Will he find the form again? Thursfield, just hasnt come on as well as he potentially showed early on. Again probably not the best kick in the world. Is very good at stopping though. Silvestor. Only one question. Why bother?

We really need Post and Rance to come on. Otherwise I just cant see how we can rteally become competitive. Watching the game last night I lament watching a player like Hurn who pinpoints passes 60 metres straight down the throat of a team mate time and time again. We dont have one player in that backline even remotely capable of delivering like that. We need to find some.

Yep. Back six was a strength last year.
In 2009 the wheels fell off completely and none of them are devoid of criticism.
Real shame as it was one aspect I thought we were getting right.

BTW for all the grief McGuane cops on here (much of it valid), it's Moore who's been the poorest tall defender for mine in 2009.
Has escaped scrutiny for much of his sh!thouse season.

Wrong and wrong. Our defence has been a shambles for years. Last night highlighted the fact we have no "talented" player in the back half - not one who is damaging and creative. We have an undersized group of triers. Not one is a player the opposition would be particularly concerned about. The best aspect of our defence is Thursfields spoiling. No one is a great kick (please don't anyone mention newman and good disposal) and none are big enough to provide a hurt and intimidation factor. All have the common trait of no composure under pressure.

I have stated for a number of years that the most critical problem was our undersized/underskilled defence and this year merely confirms it.

And it looks like Rance is another in the line of dumb defenders for Richmond - his decision making is astonishingly bad at times.

One thing though, they all (apart from muppet arms) put their bodies on the line and never give less than 100% - I'll nevber fault their application. They simply are not up to AFL standard.

I'm afraid I agree with you 100%. Furthermore we'll never get anywhere until that changes

Whilst acknowledging the likes of McGuane, Moore, Rance & Thursfield will never be in the class of a Langford or Doull, with the amount of ball they are defending they are always going to have scores kicked against them. We are conceding way too many inside 50's & at the other end not even getting it in. The whole team needs to lift, it's not just the back six's fault.

Yep understand that but they all are very similar and lack creativity.

We need to replace the majority of our backline.

I think we will see Jayden Post there next season with maybe Thursfield as he is our best stopper, but we need one more big.

What's the situation with Brian Lake again? :hihi

Re: Tigers vs Wc-Game day thread [Merged]

As someone said on the commentary our defense is out of the 80's. Defenders who defend and offer nothing offensively. No run, no skill by hand or foot just old fashioned defenders. Thirsty can kick the ball but doesn't do it near often enough. We need to inject some run and skill back there such as Tambling or similar.

Too true Bob, that is at the heart of our problems, we are void of playmakers and rely on negators. Moore has gone back into his shell, Thursfield has always been a stopper and despite his good kicking skills, rarely puts himself in a position to utilise his skills and McGuane, perhaps the most 'creative' player in the back half, continually puts his team mates under the pump with VFL standard disposal. Post for mine is a good option, he has dash and height, could be the man to make CHB his own.

In your opinion BCL.
Moore, McGuane and Thursty were all pretty good last year and showing promise however we are not far off disagreement that this year they have been shithouse.

Correct, only IMO. Agree they were "pretty good" but not long-term answers as KP defenders given their physical limitations and lack of hurt going the other way.

Of the 3 IMO only Thursfield could be one of the KP defenders at FB. Moore can play a HBF and McGuane could hopefully be traded.

We really need a Drummond/Hurn/Goddard type in our backline
