The Road to the Big Dance

I'm not convinced Chol would have improved at Richmond. Often it takes a change of club for a player to reach their potential. We had him for what, 5 years? On the evidence of his playing at Richmond he wasn't worth what GC were offering. We gave him a fair number of games at AFL level, he was inconsistent.

At the end of 2021 the decision to let him go and wish him good luck was sound on the evidence we had.

Chol has improved every year. But because his pattern is two steps forward, one step back, some can't see it.

he is averaging 6 kicks per game, and 3 scores- that is not sustainable.
He rivals McBesus as the tallest small forward to play AFL- he is averaging 2.7 marks per game.- less than Jack Guinivan,

i must admit i dont sit around and watch the Suns play, but looking at stats i dont see improvement, i see someone who is playing closer to goals, and possibly getting favourable match ups.

If you're not watching him you can't really have an opinion, Brodders.

Stats are bunk. Goals. That's all that counts, especially for a key forward. 2.1 per game. Without Ben King the Suns were meant to be bottom 3 or 4. Yet here they are knocking on the door of the 8.

Favourable match-ups? He gets the #2 defender.

by favourable match up i mean a tall defender. he should be defended by a Grimes/Broad type not a Tarrant,

he is 18th in the league for goals/game. that means pretty much every club has a better key forward than Mabior Chol.
all of those who have kicked more goals than him have taken at least 2 more marks per game than him. all get the ball more, all have more score involvements.

he is doing well, mainly because expectations were so low.

On track for a near 50 goal season.

That is good going anyway you slice it. Would play in our team ahead of Soldo every week ATM.

Saying that, we made the right call letting him walk considering the $$$ needed.

You're not seeing the woods for the trees. He and Casboult are kicking 4 per game between them, and the likes of Jeffrey, Ainsworth and Rosas are benefiting too.

Mabs has 23 goals and 6 goal assists for the year thus far. Jack Riewoldt has 21/4.

*But Mabs has played two more games!*

Yes, Mabs gets to the football. That's a good thing.

And thats the issue right there. Gold Coast squeezed as perfectly. You have to overpay for free agents unless they are flag hunting.

It's good list management by both clubs. I think we got blindsided by CCJ wanting out, we thought we would keep one of the two. But CCJ is looking very average at Norf, so we did the right thing by letting him go for the price as well. We are valuing draft capital.

I still think we end up rucking Nank, Balta/Pickett by years end.

good post. Chol is putting up Peter Wright/Brody Mihocek (except they both mark the ball) like numbers so should be commended.

Chol is doing ok, especially considering expectations. and he would be handy in our team as a 3rd/2nd ruck type. but a 4yr contract was crazy and still is.

And Mabs can ruck. That makes him more valuable.

Mihocek is a very good player as well. No harm being compared there.

If he ever could get a decent power forward in his career to play second foil to, he would take-off performance wise.

That's Jack Riewoldt who kicks more goals, has more score involvements and gets more of the ball than Chol? who most agree should retire at the end of this season?
so a 25yo Chol is his prime is doing less than a 33yo Jack Riewoldt on his last legs?

i dont want to sound like i am bagging Chol, he is doing what he can to take the opportunity he has been given, but he was never going to be a difference maker at Richmond, and probably wont be at the Suns.

Except he would be making a difference in our team. A second ruck kicking 2 goals per game instead of Soldo spending half the match on the pine.

a 2nd ruck kicking 2 goals per game would be great

do you think Chol would do that playing next to Jack and Lynch?

anyway, unless you reckon we should have offered him 4 years on the $$$the Suns have given him this is all a bit pointless.

We've just drafted a 3rd tall forward, let's see how he goes, the Good thing is he can also have a run in defence.

Dont know about the ruck work. Seem to do his best to avoid body contact.
He has the tools to be a serviceable player. Just lacks a bit of mongrel to be a very good player.
