RIP Aretha, thanks for so much great music.

Queen of soul, very sad to see her depart but the legacy lives on. Played a few of her classics last night, Say A Little Prayer, Rock Steady, Natural Woman & RESPECT. I think the hardest part to deal with is that the golden era of music is coming to a close. Those fortunate enough to have lived through the 60s-90s will appreciate the stark contrast with the trollop being served up today. Feel a bit sorry for the kids today, one only has to look at Youtube hits to realise most of the younger generation are fixated on disposable pop.

Im sure we all know now but RESPECT ( which has become a womens lib anthem) was written by and originally performed by Otis Redding.

True but she gave that track a complete makeover, much like she did with Carole King's Natural Woman. Not sure if you saw it but her performance at the Kennedy Centre a few years ago was unbelievable.

1 billion hits is the goal now, unfortunately that generally means very base level material. Not knocking a guy like Gotye who clearly has talent but his compositions bare a striking resemblence to The Police in the early eighties. Now judging by the traffic it would seem that only 0.01% could be bothered digging deep enough to unearth the true pioneers of the genre. Same goes for an artist like Kendrick Lamar who not only gets a disproportionate amount of hits but he also gets awards like the Pulitzer Prize, nothing he has written will ever be as groundbreaking as his predecessors. In the words of Bonnie Tyler, the music world is desperately holding out for a hero.

True, and besides some fake comments in the old song threads, you can see that some from younger people (i.e. I wish I lived through the 70s and 80s etc...) shows they have the nous to realise today's music is bad.

RIP Burt Reynolds, so good in movies like Deliverance. One of the last old time movie stars.
Thats really sad news. I loved Burt Reynolds films as a kid. I think the last thing I saw him in was Burn Notice, playing a former spy and he did it with so much class.

R.I.P Bandit. Loved Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball Run were two movies I loved as a kid.

Deliverance is probably my favorite Burt movie but got to know it later in life.

One of the tributes expressed a condolence to his MOTHER who is apparently still going strong at 106 !!!
Wow! Things sometimes never cease to amaze. That really is an incredible innings. And from most accounts, Roberta McCain a relatively healthy 106 too. Certainly hasn't lived a fragile life, even in her more senior years. As recently as 9 years ago (possibly even more recently), she was still taking overseas trips for holidays. Travelled across the country to be with her son's remains in the Capitol.

Saw her husband and father in law go off to WW2, her husband off to the Korea, then two sons (and her husband) go off to Vietnam. And has now outlived her elderly son. Really puts into context how many generations her life has straddled so far.
