Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

I look forward with interest as to how Cameron now expects to 'invest heavily in the draft'.
He'll retire, delist and trade whoever he can, within reason. Then he will go to the Draft table with 7 or 8 picks and that will be a heavy investment by any measure.
Johnson, Bowden, Simmonds, Brown, Polak and Coughlan will all retire, in all likelihood, JON, Schulz and Hughes will be moved on, regardless of whether there is any interest. At least one of Raines, McMahon or King will be traded if possible.
It won't matter if they pick up extra early picks or not. Going by most seasons, there are plenty of reasonable players taken in the late rounds or in the rookie draft.
What wil be a problem this year is the Rookie Draft. With a reduced pool, it is quite likely that there won't be much on offer in terms of 18 year olds.
They should be looking to keep as many second year rookies as possible and then look to the VFL, SANFL, WAFL for a couple of 20-22 year olds to round out the list. There might also be a few rookies or younger players who are delisted by their club with a view to putting back on the rookie list, who can be targetted.
Investing in the draft doesn't necessarily mean chasing a poultice of 18 year-olds. There are plenty of 19,20,21,22 year-olds desperate for an opportunity to play AFL.
You could make a very good AFL side out of these players alone, it would include the likes of Dale Morris, Matthew Boyd, Priddis, Porplyzia, Vince, Nahas, Skipworth, Armfield, Patfull, Lovett, Lovett-Murray, Ben Hudson, Zac Dawson, amongst plenty of others.
