Well the Doggies picking Docherty forces my hand a bit but who I had lined up as first preference is still there for the Roos. North have inside mids in abundance as well as mid-sized forwards. Rucks okay for now. Could use a key forward or key back here but that sits behind outside run and skill in the midfield or on the HBF as a need. Someone who can be a playmaker off that HB flank especially is a massive need. Rawlings gone who do this albeit in a bland fashion, Urquhart struggling the last few years and Richardson not really making the step up from the pace of VFL footy to AFL yet.

So at pick #18 North Melbourne select:

Brandon Ellis

DOB: 03/08/1993
Height: 181cm
Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: Calder Cannons

Ellis is a smart, versatile footballer who can read the play well and has good skills by hand or foot. He also can win his own ball and doesn't rely on being constantly fed it to have an impact in his position. Not only that he can shut down an opponent, tackle well and is not all one way. At the national championships, he averaged 76 per cent disposal efficiency, and was involved in more scores than any other defender, according to Champion Data. He made the AFL under 18 All-Australian team for his efforts. Tested very well at the draft combine to cement his first-round status. He will deliver the above need for a HB playmaker in spades and probably slot into North's best 22 straight away. Could even see him pushing into midfield rotations at some stage will but will start off on a flank and make that position his own. Looking to pick up a key back or key forward next but Ellis was too good to pass up here.

Nice story on him a few days ago in the Herald Sun:

Pick 20 Freo select Zyrus Manson. It's a risk but it's worth taking. We need some more height and some X factor. ;D

Pick 22:

Carlton select - Todd Elton

Was tossing up whether to go tall or small, but I decided on tall. Carlton have fairly poor depth in this area, and Elton has a lot of that terrible word, "potential". There were a few hybrid mids that I could have taken here, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them go soon.

Pick 23: West Coast Eagles select player # 857348 - Devon Smith

A rover from the Geelong Falcons, Devon is known for his speed / power combination and an eye for goal.

West Coast recruiting manager said after the draft "We were rapt to get Devon with pick 23. We had him ranked in the Top 10 and see him as a long term partner for Luke Shuey in our midfield"

Described by those in the know down Geelong way as reminding them of a young Andrew Bews, this kid is a steal at 23.

Will look good on the expanses of Subi too.

A few may have been sweating on him, myself included.

I wonder what the chances of a fall to 26 in the real dance will be? Our club could do a lot worse than this young fella.
