The Grundy Proposition

Pass for me, the Nank with assistance when required from Ivan works well.

I've toyed with the idea - but like others think the marginal gain isn't there and Ryan I think will develop massively in this space in coming years as Nank wears out and Soldo still solid.

Think we need to put our capital into a second forward and small forwards until something really works.

Got to hand it to Collingwood, they knew exactly what they were doing with the salary dump. Virtually sorted out their issues overnights and now their TPP are fit for a King…

As for Grundy, hard no.

I don't want Grundy at Punt Rd.
Toby is our Captain, he is a heart and soul player and if he was to leave against his will we may end up how the Club was when The Whale was sent packing.

he still has some decent footy left, but is a hard pass for all the same reasons we didn't chase him last off season.

*smile* them. They were pulling themselves the day they beat us in the practice match.
No club should enquire about him let Melb owe 750k for the next 4 years.
He isn't anywhere as good as people make him out to be.
Collingwood kept a bloke on 225k and they sit on top of the ladder a game clear.
Keep clear Soldo is better

If Collingwood and Melbourne between them pay 70% of his wage then he'd be good back-up... for Soldo.

That was never going to work. Gawn is the best ruck in the AFL. He is probably the best rucking forward in the AFL. But he isnt a particularly good forward.
Grundy is one of the best rucks in the AFL, but isnt particularly good as a rucking forward, and is ordinary as a forward.

I reckon both Grundy and the Dees list managers badly misread that option.
They saw Grundy as replacing Luke Jackson

the tribe has spoken, no grundy then

would still like to see our midfield dominate clearance next year as we will have at least five big, seasoned bodies in there. if nank and soldo can facilitate that then I'll be happy!

If we wait a couple of years until he's onto his fourth or fifth club we could pick him up for the average wage ( the average wage for everyone not just AFL players) of about $85K !

I'd still say no.

Talking to some Pie supporter mates of mine about him & they were very happy with his move to the Dees, didn't think he was a good "clubman".
I think they might be on the money.

I did mock, but again if we are paying say 30-40% of wages then maybe... but you'd have to swap someone out - Soldo maybe - just for salary cap considerations. KPFs are the critical priority for us going into 2024.

Someone here suggested he'd be a good fit for Port.

In general, ruck is the least influential position on the ground, so I'll always prefer to invest the least amount of salary cap and draft picks to rucks.

Also, I think hitouts are overrated and our midfield will perform about the same regardless of who plays ruck.

Graeme Wright is the man who turned around the Skunks off field.

Savvy campaigner.

Taswegian too from memory so he might be the man that the AFL will turn to when the Tassies come on board to have them going in the Wright direction!!

I'll see myself out.

Nah, sorry Carts, we need a key forward, we have 3 rucks already. I think we need to give Ryan more opportunities tbh.

Grundy is a small upgrade on Nanks which some may debate also.
Ben Brown would be ok .kicks straight and would help Lynch .

Grundy was all Australian in 2018 and 2019.

In a period where we were playing a 3 time premiership ruckman at the height of his powers.

If I could have chosen whether I could have Grundy or Nank during that period, it would be Nank every day of the week.

Both have declined since then.

Brodie will be starting next season as a 30 year old. Nank won't, but is not far behind.

So if I wouldn't have Grundy over Nank then, would I have him now?

Maybe on his day. But he adds nothing to a horses for courses combo of Nank, Soldo and Ryan next year.

I think, historically, Grundy has been much more effective in theory than in practice. Played like a 6 foot 8 Midfielder. Was a pretty good Midfielder, and a good ruck, which is a powerful combo. But I don't think he was elite at either. Soldo always beat him in the centre. He's not much of a creator, defender or goal kicker, but powerful enough at the clearance. And he got away with a lot of holding on his heyday, with the star aura. Gets pinged for it now as he's gotten sloppier in the core. As much as he was a very good player, he was not in the same league as someone like Gawn, and we've now found that out for certain.

I can't think of any teams now that would want a 30 year old ruck who can't go forward or back. Especially one on a 4 year, 500,000 plus per year contract.

We certainly don't.

No.

No more topping up. We're a ways off being a flag contender. He's the wrong age for us.

We're a ways off being a flag contender.

You reckon General?

Sure, we're middling this year, but that midfield and backline won't be getting any worse.

As others have pointed out, the F50 is where we need some renovation. Get that sorted and we're a show again you'd think.

In any case I can see how a Grundy wouldn't be top priority.

If our captain wasnt no 1 ruck it would be a good idea , in our case he is so bin it , would face the same dilemma demons do with both playing poorly
